NOTE OF THE NIGHT APPROACHING 700 - With 698 career goals, Ovechkin is aiming to reach the 700-goal mark tonight in his 1,139th career game, which would be the second- fewest games required to reach the milestone in NHL history. Wayne Gretzky (886 games) and Brett Hull (1,157 games) are the only players to record 700 goals in fewer than 1,200 games. - Ovechkin would go from 600 to 700 goals in only 149 games, the fewest games to make that leap for any member of the 700-goal club. Should he record two goals tonight, it would mark the second-fewest games Ovechkin has required to go from one 100-goal milestone to another in his career (100 to 200 goals, 129 games). - Ovechkin has averaged 0.61 goals-per-game at this point in his career, ranking fifth in NHL history (minimum 300 games played), including an NHL-best 0.59 rate since his 30th birthday on Sept. 17, 2015. Among players in the 700-goal club, only two scored at a rate of 0.50 goals per game or higher from the age of 30 onward (Esposito: 0.57; Dionne: 0.51).

TOP CAPS FACTS OVI REACHES 40 - Alex Ovechkin is tied for first in the NHL with 40 goals. Ovechkin reached the 40-goal mark before any other player, the ninth time in his career he was the first player to reach the mark, extending his NHL record. - Ovechkin's 11 40-goal seasons are the second-most in NHL history, only trailing Wayne Gretzky’s 12, and he is the only player in NHL history to record 11 40-goal seasons with one team. - Ovechkin recorded his 40th goal in 53 games, the third-fewest games to reach the mark in his career, trailing his 2009-10 season (51 games), when he was 24 years old, and his 2007-08 season (52 games), when he was 22 years old. - He became the 10th player in NHL history to score 40 goals at the age of 34 or older and the first since Daniel Alfredsson in 2007-08. Only two players have scored 50 goals at the age of 34 or older: Johnny Bucyk in 1970-71 (51 goals) and Jaromir Jagr in 2005-06 (54 goals). Ovechkin will be 34 years and 209 days old on April 4, the final game of the season, and he is currently on pace to finish his year with 60 goals.

LAST WE MET - The last time the Capitals played the Islanders on Jan. 18, Washington scored five unanswered goals in the third period to win 6-4. - With that win, Washington, which also won after overcoming a three-goal, third-period deficit on Oct. 25 at , accomplished the feat multiple times in a single season for the first time in franchise history. - The five third period goals marked the most goals the Capitals have scored in a single period this season and the first time the Capitals have recorded that many goals in a period since Nov. 5, 2013 (five, vs. Islanders in 6-2 win). - Washington holds a record of 7-12-1 when they trail a game after two periods, the best point percentage in the NHL (.350).

CARLY FOR NORRIS - John Carlson has 51 assists this season, which leads all defensemen. Carlson reached the 50-assist total in his 54th game, setting the franchise record for the fewest games to reach the total by a Capitals defenseman, nine games fewer than the previous low of 63 set by Mike Green in 2009-10. He became the NHL's fifth different defenseman in the last 30 years to reach the 50-assist mark in 54 games or fewer and first since Sergei Zubov in 1993-94. - Carlson has 21 multi-point games, seven more than the next closest defenseman (Nashville’s : 14). With 27 games remaining, Carlson’s 21 multi-point games are already tied for the third-most in the NHL by a defenseman over the last five seasons, four shy of passing San Jose’s Brent Burns’ mark of 24 in 2015-16. Of his 21 multi-point games, seven have been three-point games, which also leads defensemen. Since 1979-80, Mike Green has the most multi-point games by a Capital (24 in 2008-09). - Carlson is on pace for 97 points over an 82-game season. Only five defensemen in NHL history have recorded more than 100 points in a season (Bobby Orr: six times; Paul Coffey: five times; , Al MacInnis and Brian Leetch: each once). - Carlson is already six points shy of surpassing his career high set last season (13g, 57a), and he’s now just 17 points shy of setting the franchise record for the most points in a season by a defenseman. - The Capitals have a 27-7-3 record this season when Carlson records a point. No player on the Capitals has contributed points in more games or wins than Carlson. - Additionally, with 468 career points (104g, 361a), Carlson is now seven points shy of passing Calle Johansson (474) for the most points in franchise history by a defenseman.

ROOKIE SAMMY - Ilya Samsonov recorded an 11 straight decisions win streak from Nov. 30 to Jan. 31. He joined Ross Brooks (14-0-0 in 1973-74) and George Hainsworth (11-0-0 in 1926-27) as just the third rookie goaltender in NHL history to string together wins in 11 consecutive decisions. - The rookie, who has a 16-3-1 record through 22 games (2.19 goals against average, .923 save percentage and 1 shutout), is also 10- 0-0 as the visitor this season and sits one win shy of joining (11-0-0 from Feb. 26, 1999 to Jan. 13, 2001 with St. Louis) as the second goaltender in NHL history to win each of his first 11 road decisions to begin his career. - He is tied for fourth in the NHL among all goaltenders with at least 20 games played in goals against average and tied for the eighth highest save percentage. - Samsonov is the only goaltender in the NHL with fewer than four losses and at least 20 games played. - Samsonov has recorded a .667 quality start percentage - the percentage of starts a goaltender records a save percentage higher than the League average (.908) – which is tied for fourth in the NHL among goaltenders with at least 20 games, trailing Arizona’s Darcy Kuemper (.760 qs%), Dallas' (.684 qs%) and Pittsburgh's Tristan Jarry (.680). - Since the 1955-56 season - the first season the NHL began recording save percentages - only one goaltender aged 22 or younger has recorded as low a goals against average and as high a save percentage in at least 20 games in a single season as Samsonov (Tuukka Rask: 22-12-5, 1.97 goals against average and .931 save percentage).

AMONG THE BEST - The Capitals are second in the NHL standings with 77 points (36-14-5) and are on pace to finish with 114 points this season.

In his first year with the club, the Islanders earned 103-points, for their highest total since the 1983-84 season (104 points). The Islanders’ fourth-place Eastern Conference ranking was their best finish since the conference was created (1993). The Islanders finished fifth overall in the NHL standings, marking their first top-5 finish since 1985-86 (5th overall).

Trotz moved into fourth place on the NHL’s all-time wins list during his first season on Long Island, passing Islanders franchise legend on the list with his 783rd career victory. Trotz finished the 2018-19 season with 810 career wins.

Trotz spent the previous four seasons as the Head Coach of the Washington Capitals. During his tenure in Washington, Trotz led the Capitals to two consecutive Presidents’ Trophies (2015-16 and 2016-17) and won the franchise’s first Stanley Cup (2017-18). He was awarded the Jack Adams Trophy (2015-16)
