RESUMEN (en Inglés) Rivers are one of the most important water resources on the planet. Fluvial fish species represent an important economic and ecological resource, such as the Atlantic salmon and the Brown trout. Many of their populations are threatened or in decline due to the degradation of their ecosystems and the introduction of exotic species. In Spain there are a total of 45 freshwater exotic species, more than 60% are fish species, and 15% are non-arthropod invertebrates, mainly molluscs. In Spanish watersheds, most of the exotic species come from America or Asia but also some allochthonous introductions come from translocations between basins of different latitudes within the Iberian Peninsula. The early detection of these invasive species is an urgent need in order to develop measures to mitigate their impact. Sometimes this early detection is not easy, for this reason, alternatives methods have been developed, among which are techniques based on environmental DNA, and citizen involvement as a warning method. The main objectives of this PhD Thesis consisted in developing specific markers for detecting invasive freshwater fish and mollusc species in Spain, their validation in water samples, assessing their performance in Europe, and evaluate the human factor in the introduction of exotic species, including knowledge of local population about them. The results are reflected in seven scientific articles. For the design of specific markers, characteristic regions for each species were searched for in the cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) and 16SrDNA genes and specific markers were designed for thirteen invasive species in Europe: the catfish Ameirus sp (both for A. melas and A. nebulosus), the mosquito fish Gambusia sp (G. holbrooki and G. affinis), the black bass Micropterus salmoides, the pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus, the stone moroko Pseudorasbora parva, the New Zealand mudsnail Potamopyrgus antipodarum, the Asian clam Corbicula sp (C. fluminea and C. fluminalis), the red-rimmed melania Melanoides tuberculata, the Chinese pond mussel Sinanodonta woodiana and the Conrad's false mussel Mytilopsis leucophaeata. The markers were validated in environmental DNA (eDNA) extracted from water samples obtained in several basins of the Iberian Peninsula: Ebro, Guadalquivir, Tajo and North. The same markers were successfully applied in the region of Lake Constance in Germany recording its effectiveness in other latitudes. Using next generation sequencing techniques (NGS) based on universal primers to amplify a region of the COI gene; it was possible to detect other invasive aquatic species. Comparing both methods, specific markers were more sensitive than NGS, highlighting their usefulness in the early detection of invasive species. Finally, a specific marker for salmonids was designed in the 16SrDNA gene, based on nested PCR and subsequent digestion of the fragment amplified with restriction enzymes. The marker was used to evaluate the salmonids present in the Nalón River. The role of river barriers has been evaluated, using the Nalón River as a case study. Barriers negatively affected native species but also stopped the expansion upstream of exotic species. The ports, the areas between reservoirs and the areas of the rivers near big cities have been identified as the main hotspots of exotic species introduction that should be a priority objective of environmental monitoring and surveillance according to the results of this Thesis. In the same way, Citizen science helped with the detection of exotic species in this work. The results of local citizens' surveys showed a limited knowledge of exotic species in Asturias. However, a positive attitude towards the eradication of these species and a high awareness to preserve the autochthonous species was detected. Moreover the health, ecological and economic risks derived from the exotic species found in Asturias were described. DENYS* (1, 4) Abstract. – This study described a new stone loach species in France, Barbatula leoparda, which is endemic to French Catalonia (Têt and Tech river drainages). Seven specimens were compared to 49 specimens of B. bar- batula (Linnaeus, 1758) and 71 specimens of B. quignardi (Băcescu-Meşter, 1967). This new species is char- acterized by the presence of blotches on the belly and the jugular area in individuals longer than 47 mm SL and by a greater interorbital distance (35.5 to 41.8% of the head length). We brought moreover the sequence of two mitochondrial markers (COI and 12S, respectively 652 and 950 bp) of the holotype, which are well distinct from all other species, for molecular identifications. This discovery is important for conservation. Results of GMYC, bPTP, and phylogenetic analyses were similar and suggested that species diversity in Iran is currently underestimated. At least four can- didate species, Capoeta sp4, Capoeta sp5, Capoeta sp6, and Capoeta sp7, are awaiting description. Capoeta capoeta comprises a species complex with distinct genetic line- ages. The divergence times of the three main Capoeta clades are estimated to have occurred around 15.6–12.4 Mya, consistent with a Mio- Pleistocene origin of the di- versity of Capoeta in Iran. The changes in Caspian Sea levels associated with climate fluctuations and geomorphological events such as the uplift of the Zagros and Alborz Mountains may account for the complex speciation patterns in Capoeta in Iran.

Sanchiz (*) RESUMEN Durante el periodo 1978-1994 se han descrito cerca de 2.000 especies animales nue- vas para la ciencia en territorio ibérico-balear. Se presenta como apéndice un listado completo de las especies (1978-1993), ordenadas taxonómicamente, así como de sus referencias bibliográficas. Como tendencias generales en este proceso de inventario de la biodiversidad se aprecia un incremento moderado y sostenido en el número de taxones descritos, junto a una cada vez mayor contribución de los autores españoles. Es cada vez mayor el número de especies publicadas en revistas que aparecen en el Science Citation Index, así como el uso del idioma inglés. La mayoría de los phyla, clases u órdenes mues- tran gran variación en la cantidad de especies descritas cada año, dado el pequeño núme- ro absoluto de publicaciones. Los insectos son claramente el colectivo más estudiado, pero se aprecia una disminución en su importancia relativa, asociada al incremento de estudios en grupos poco conocidos como los nematodos. Unvertretbare Auswirkungen auf den Naturhalt sollen vermieden werden. Die ökologische Risikoanalyse stellt die dafür benötigten Informationen durch eine Abschätzung der Exposition der Organismen und der sich daraus ergebenden Effekte bereit. Die Effektabschätzung beruht dabei hauptsächlich auf standardisierten ökotoxikologischen Tests im Labor mit wenigen, oft nicht einheimischen Stellvertreterarten. In diesen Tests werden z. B. Effekte auf das Überleben, das Wachstum und/oder die Reproduktion von Fischen bei verschiedenen Konzentrationen der Testsubstanz gemessen und Endpunkte wie die LC50 (Lethal Concentrations for 50%) oder eine NOEC (No Observed Effect Concentration, z. B. für Wachstum oder Reproduktionsparameter) abgeleitet. Für Fische und Wirbeltiere im Allgemeinen beziehen sich die spezifischen Schutzziele auf das Überleben von Individuen und die Abundanz und Biomasse von Populationen.

    Rote Liste der Fische (Pisces) Österreichs Georg Wolfram, Ernst Mikschi*‡ Zusammenfassung Die vorliegende Arbeit folgt den Richtlinien zur Fortschreibung der Roten Liste gefähr- deter Tiere Österreichs (Zulka et al. 2001, Umweltbundesamt-Monographien Band 15, Wien). Die aktuelle Checkliste der Fische Österreichs umfasst 84 Taxa. Im Vergleich zur letzten Roten Liste (Spindler et al. 1997, Umweltbundesamt-Monographien Band 87, Wien) wurden einige Taxa aufgrund aktueller nomenklatorischer und taxonomischer Entwicklungen, auf die gesondert eingegangen wird, neu aufgenommen. Zwei Taxa werden als weltweit ausgestorben (Kategorie EX; Extinct) beurteilt, fünf Taxa sind regional ausgestorben (Kategorie RE; Regionally Extinct). In der Gefährdungs- kategorie „Critically Endangered“ (CR, vom Aussterben bedroht) finden sich sechs Ar- ten, 18 in der Kategorie „Endangered“ (EN; stark gefährdet) und 15 in der Kategorie „Vulnerable“ (VU; gefährdet). Neun Arten stehen auf der Vorwarnliste (Kategorie NT; Near Threatened), 17 weitere Arten, also rund ein Fünftel der aufgenommenen Taxa, sind in Österreich der Kategorie „Least Concern“ (LC; nicht gefährdet) zugeordnet. Für drei Taxa mit äußerst unsicherer taxonomischer Situation reicht die Datenlage für eine Ein- stufung nicht aus (Kategorie DD; Data Deficient). Bei weiteren neun in die Checkliste aufgenommenen Arten handelt es sich um überregional verbreitete und reproduzierende Neozoen, die explizit nicht in die Beurteilung im Rahmen der Roten Liste einbezogen werden (Kategorie NE; Not Evaluated). Aufgrund geänderter Definitionen der Gefährdungskategorien ist die vorliegende Ar- beit mit der Roten Liste von Spindler et al. (1997, Umweltbundesamt-Monographien Band 87, Wien) nur bedingt vergleichbar. Die meisten Unterschiede der Gefährdungs- einstufung sind auf methodische Änderungen oder eine geänderte Datenlage zurückzu- führen. The aim of this research was to increase the information Squalius on ecological preferences of this species and to focus on its differences lucumonis, with S. squalus (Bonaparte, 1837). Data collected in 86 different water- Squalius courses throughout Tiber River basin were analysed in the research. For squalus, each of the 368 river sectors examined, the main environmental parame- longitudinal ters and the fish community were considered. The information were anal- gradient, ysed by means of the Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) while the fish assemblage differences in ecological traits between S. lucumonis and S. squalus were compared by ANOVA. The results of the study showed significant differ- ences in the ecological preferences of the two species: the S. lucumonis showed predilection for smaller watercourses characterised by a lower number of species and a higher degree of integrity of fish community than S. squalus This information allowed to increase the basic knowledge on population biology and ecology of S.

Morphological analyses revealed the existence of different morpho- types (Garcı´a-Berthou et al. 1989, Doadrio et al. 2002), however, the degree of differentiation is similar to that detected in closely related species. A. iberus differs from all other known species of Aphanius in the combination of 8 – 9 branched rays in the anal fin, 9 – 10 bran- ched rays in the dorsal fin, short and high caudal peduncle, and greater preorbital length than Aphanius baeticus (the most similar species). A. iberus is sexually dimorphic. Adult males show a color- ation pattern characterized by narrow silver transversal bars along the body side, which are continued on the caudal fin (3 – 4 bars). Females show numerous small dark spots on the body flanks which tend to form rows, one of them along the lateral line. Males (Total lengthmax £ 45 mm) are smaller overall than females (Total lengthmax £ 60 mm).
