Signed: _______________________________ Date: ________________________________ 2 Abstract The Engineering Doctorate (EngD) was conducted in conjunction with BT Research on state-of-the-art Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) projects. The first area of work is a literature review of WSN project applications, some of which the author worked on as a BT Researcher based at the world renowned Adastral Park Research Labs in Suffolk (2004-09). WSN applications are examined within the context of Machine-to-Machine (M2M); Information Networking (IN); Internet/Web of Things (IoT/WoT); smart home and smart devices; BT’s 21st Century Network (21CN); Cloud Computing; and future trends. In addition, this thesis provides an insight into the capabilities of similar external WSN project applications. Under BT’s Sensor Virtualization project, the second area of work focuses on building a Generic Architecture for WSNs with reusable infrastructure and ‘infostructure’ by identifying and trialling suitable components, in order to realise actual business benefits for BT. The third area of work focuses on the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards and their Sensor Web Enablement (SWE) initiative. -

Infrastructure Report 2014 Ofcom’s second full analysis of the UK’s communications infrastructure Publication date: 8 December 2014 Infrastructure Report 2014 About this document Every three years, Ofcom is required by the Communications Act 2003 to prepare a report for the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport on the status of electronic communications networks and services in the UK. We are then required to publish the report.1 The UK’s communications infrastructure is a vital enabler, supporting a vast amount of economic and social activity, by both consumers and businesses. This report provides an overview of the state of that infrastructure: its coverage, capacity and reliability. We consider these at a national level and the variation across the UK. The report looks at: • the coverage, performance and capacity of networks and services; • use of spectrum; • infrastructure sharing; and • security and resilience. The main networks considered are the fixed broadband and telephony networks; mobile voice and data networks; Wi-Fi; and broadcast and radio networks. The report includes detailed analysis of operators’ data, external research and an assessment of the main strategic and policy implications. The first Infrastructure Report was published in November 2011. Since then we have issued annual updates, focusing on the areas of the most rapid change such as the coverage and capacity of fixed, mobile and broadcast networks. This second full report will be of interest to those looking to understand the nature, performance and reach of the UK’s communications infrastructure. It will be of direct relevance to policymakers and industry stakeholders and, we hope, will make interesting reading for anyone who wants to explore how our infrastructure is evolving. -

2006 Social and Environmental report About the Report Our Social and Environmental report includes BT’s: • Corporate Social Responsibility performance for the financial year 1 April 2005- 31March 2006, which is audited by LRQA, indicated by • Regulatory Compliance Report which is audited by PWC, and this year includes the first report on their activities from the Equality of Access Board • Independently written 'Hot Topics'; this year’s explores what a genuinely carbon neutral BT would look like. We have also produced a short report, CSR – Business Overview to explain our CSR issues in the context of our business strategy and summarise our CSR performance over the 2006 financial year. Our online social and environmental report has clear links to relevant GRI indicators and the UN Global Compact principles and we have improved the search function to make it easier for readers to view relevant sections of the report. Assurance This report has been assured against the AA1000 Assurance Standard and prepared in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Sustainability Reporting Guidelines 2002, with reference to the GRI Pilot Telecommunications Sector Supplement. The Pole Tax Repurposed
RTT TECHNOLOGY TOPIC July 2011 The Pole Tax Repurposed This month’s technology topic is nominally about telegraph poles also known as utility poles but telegraph poles are in effect a proxy for regulatory and competition policy so the discussion will be broader. Have a look outside your window at the nearest telegraph pole. Have a look at what is on it, probably either power lines or twisted pair then consider how long the pole has been there, who owns the pole, maintains the pole and makes money out of the pole and then consider other uses for the pole, what else the pole could profitably be used for. It might also be useful to have a look at some of the other street furniture including telecommunication street cabinets, lamp posts and camera installations and to consider what goes on beneath our feet as well. It does not take long to come to the conclusion that the way ‘stuff’ is delivered is not particularly efficient or effective. This is nothing new and before we grapple with those poles let’s take a short journey underground and take a look not at telecommunications but at the sewage system. In the 1840’s parliament ruled that all houses in London should drain into sewers which then ultimately ended up in the Thames which became too contaminated to drink. There were several outbreaks of cholera and in 1858 the smell of the Thames (The Great Stink) caused Parliament to go into recess. As a result Sir Joseph Bazalgette was commissioned to turn 318 million bricks into the sewer system that still (just about) evacuates London today, a process started in 1859. -
