In making her first full-length album, Bea Miller’s vision was clear. A singer/songwriter whose raspy vocals and sharp-edged pop have already earned her recognition as one of iTunes New Artist Spotlights for 2015, Rolling Stone’s “10 Artists You Need To Know”, as an MTV “Artist to Watch for 2015,” and as one of Billboard’s “10 Arists to Watch in 2015,” Bea’s main ambition was to create songs that spoke the sometimes-messy truth and helped others overcome their own hurt. “When I was younger, I never felt like I had a female artist who wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, someone I could relate to and look up to,” says Bea. “Now that I’m making my own music, I want to be there for people so they can feel less alone in whatever they’re going through.” Recorded over the last year—with time out for an autumn 2014 tour with Demi Lovato—Not An Apology finds Bea fulfilling her mission by infusing her punk spirit into impassioned pop songs with a fiercely uplifting power. Featuring several tracks co-written by Bea (including her debut single “Young Blood,” a darkly charged anthem that hit the Billboard Hot 100 soon after its April 2014 release), Not An Apology mines her everyday experience for unapologetically honest lyrics about everything from bullying and backstabbers to isolation and breakup angst. “When you’re writing you have to get down to your deepest, darkest emotions, because that’s what makes a great song,” says Bea. “You need to be totally real and just put it all out there.” To capture the tension between toughness and vulnerability that propels much of Not An Apology, Bea teamed up with producers like busbee (P!nk, Kelly Clarkson), Jarrad Rogers (Icona Pop, Demi Lovato), Mike Del Rio (Kylie Minogue, Selena Gomez), and Matt Squire (Ariana Grande, Ke$ha) to craft a melody-fueled mix of gritty guitar riffs, fuzzed-out grooves, and awesomely heady beats.

MARCH/APRIL 2011 ISSUE MMUSICMAG.COM Panic! At the Disco released the long- awaited Vices & Virtues, the band’s third album and its fi rst written entirely by Urie and Smith. “It defi nitely took some time to fi gure out exactly what we wanted to do,” Smith acknowledges. “Even though it was still Panic, it felt like a new band.” Working with producers John Feldmann and Butch Walker, Urie and Smith struggled to fi nd their sound—but they did know they wanted to recapture the spirit of their debut, 2005’s multiplatinum A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out. Smith recalls that in the group’s early days, the members felt a sense of musical freedom. They paired punk guitars and pop melodies with synthesizer licks and dance beats, never thinking their hyperactive, hyper-emotional sound would help defi ne alternative rock for the MySpace era. “On our fi rst record, that was the mentality: Anything was allowed,” Smith says. “There was no pressure. Any musical style was possible.” On its follow-up, the band opted for what Smith calls a more “confi ned” Brendon Urie, Spencer Smith Jennifer Tzar approach, allowing their budding enthusiasm for ’60s psychedelic rock to lead them down the rabbit hole of Pretty. Oct. 2021 Reading real person fiction as digital fiction: An argument for new perspectives Judith Fathallah Bangor University, UK Abstract ‘Real person fiction’ (RPF) is a subset of fanfiction that has gone largely unnoticed by academics. A handful of articles have argued for the justification of stories about real (living) people as a legitimate and morally sound art form, but only a very few studies have begun to consider RPF as a genre with its own aesthetics and conventions.

Jon Caramanica of The New York Times called it “… one of this year’s most exuberant pop albums,” adding, “Ms. Miller is now channeling a mélange of teen-girl pop rebels: the moodiness of Lorde on “Young Blood,” the rock swagger of midperiod Miley Cyrus on the excellent “Fire N Gold,” and yes, the snottiness of Avril Lavigne’s first album on “Rich Kids.” Billboard declared, “…Not An Apology overflows with defiantly sneering rock…explicitly—and effectively – positions her as a teenage rebel.” The impressive list of accolades includes: Rolling Stone, who spotlighted Bea in their coveted “10 Artists You Need To Know” noting her songs sound like, “All the best Nineties teen movies compressed into three minute pop jams,” BuzzFeed naming “Force of Nature” one of the 40 Pop Songs You Can’t Miss This Summer and “Young Blood” one of 5 underrated songs of 2014 saying, “With singles like “Fire n’ Gold” and “Young Blood,” Miller is making her way to be the next Lorde,” ELLE Magazine calling her an “...X Factor contender turned newly minted pop star,” and most recently a Teen Choice nomination for Next Big Thing.
