Baal (Teaching from Dutch Sheets) Baal (Teaching from Dutch Sheets) Ø Through a season of tremendous warfare in November and December, as well as confirmation from many key leaders, God has exposed the spirit of Baal as one of the strongmen-perhaps the strongman-over America. Ø Baal is identified as the ruler of the demons. Matthew 12:24 (Beelzebub is another name for Baal) Ø Baal-hamon, one of Baal's names, means "the lord of wealth or abundance." Chuck Pierce believes, and I agree, that this is the principality warring against the great transfer of wealth to the church. You must war against this spirit to see your inheritance released. Claim *Jeremiah 51:44 (Bel in this verse is Baal). Ø Baal-berith, another of his names, means "the lord of the covenant." The Hebrew word baal actually means "husband" or "marriage." This spirit always attempted to cause Israel to "divorce" or break covenant with God and "marry" or align with him. Consistent with this, in so many ways America has broken covenant with God and married Baal. This is, I believe, the strongman behind most covenant-breaking. Ø Baal is the strongman behind sexual perversion. Homosexuality was and is one of his big strongholds. I believe all of the sexual sin and perversion in America is, to one degree or another, under Baal's orchestration. You will continue to see God expose leaders in the church who aligned themselves with this spirit. Pray for the church to be cleansed and for Baal's hold on America in this area to be broken. Ø Baal always goes after the next generation, trying to cut off the extension of God's covenantal purposes. He is a violent spirit and even required human sacrifice. Abortion is under Baal, as is the "cutting" of today's young generation (see 1 Kings 18:28), the vampire and goth movement, and the death culture in general that has so invaded America. Baal is leading the fight to avert the great awakening planned for the young generation of Americans today. Pray against and bind these efforts. Ø Witchcraft and occult spirits in general operate under Baal. So does Jezebel. The doxology in Jeremiah 51:15- With Attribution (CC-BY) 19 (MT) does, however, serve as a link between these oracles and the remainder of the book of Jeremiah. By giving the impression of being a deliberate quotation of 10:12-16, 51:15-19 takes the reader back to 10:1-16, a composition in which the contrast between the idols of the nations and YHWH is emphasized. YHWH has the power to execute his plan to destroy Babylon. 51:15- 19 did, however, attain a distinct identity through its close connections with the oracles against Babylon. It paradoxically functions as a link between these oracles and those against Judah. In contrast to YHWH’s actions, which resulted in the destruction of Jerusalem, his future dealings would result in the fall of Babylon and the return of his people from exile. 1. ETS, Atlanta 2010 “The Prophet Jeremiah as Theological Symbol in the Book of Jeremiah” Gary E. Yates, Ph.D. Introduction Timothy Polk has noted, “Nothing distinguishes the book of Jeremiah from earlier works of prophecy quite so much as the attention it devotes to the person of the prophet and the prominence it accords the prophetic ‘I’, and few things receive more scholarly comment.”1 More than simply providing a biographical or psychological portrait of the prophet, the book presents Jeremiah as a theological symbol who embodies in his person the word of Yahweh and the office of prophet. 2 In fact, the figure of Jeremiah is so central that a theology of the book of Jeremiah “cannot be formulated without taking into account the person of the prophet, as the book presents him.”3 The purpose of this study is to explore how Jeremiah the person functions as a theological symbol and what these motifs contribute to the overall theology of the book of Jeremiah.

    J. Barton Payne, "The Unity of Isaiah: Evidence From Chapters 36-39," Bulletin of the Evangelical Theological Society 6.2 (May 1963): 50-56. The Unity of Isaiah: Evidence from Chapters 36-39 J. Barton Payne [p.50] The four chapters of Isaiah 36-39 that appear also in II Kings 18-20 and that contain historical dialog between the prophet and his king, Hezekiah, have produced more critical debate than any other section of I and II Kings.1 They furnish also some of our primary evidence for the unity of the Book of Isaiah,2 forming, as Delitzsch has put it, a “bridge” to the prophecies that follow.3 A thorough treatment of this evidence hence becomes impossible under present limitations. The writer would seek, however, to indicate three specific areas within this larger discussion in which sharpened awareness may contribute to a defense of the total authority of Scripture. L. CONDITIONING FACTORS IN EVANGELICALISM’S APPROACH TO ISAIAH 36-39 If we take, for example, such a question as the relation of Isaiah 36-39 to II Kings 18-20, it appears at the outset that liberal and conservative writers reach opposite conclusions because of their respective methodologies. The liberal, e.g. S.R. Driver, limits his admissable evidence to inductive comparisons of literary detail and of thematic concepts; he thus decides in favor of the priority of Kings.4 The conservative, e.g. Franz Delitzsch, while utilizing historical prose style as a confirmatory factor, concentrates on two reasons that arise (1) out of an analogy with other sections of Kings and Isaiah and (2) out of the authority of Chronicles, deductively applied to the chapters in question; he thus insists upon the originality of Isaiah.5 Bible believing scholars appear to be conditioned by five distinctive principles.

  • Idolatry in the Ancient Near East1
Idolatry in the Ancient Near East1 Ancient Near Eastern Pantheons Ammonite Pantheon The chief god was Moloch/Molech/Milcom. Assyrian Pantheon The chief god was Asshur. Babylonian Pantheon At Lagash - Anu, the god of heaven and his wife Antu. At Eridu - Enlil, god of earth who was later succeeded by Marduk, and his wife Damkina. Marduk was their son. Other gods included: Sin, the moon god; Ningal, wife of Sin; Ishtar, the fertility goddess and her husband Tammuz; Allatu, goddess of the underworld ocean; Nabu, the patron of science/learning and Nusku, god of fire. Canaanite Pantheon The Canaanites borrowed heavily from the Assyrians. According to Ugaritic literature, the Canaanite pantheon was headed by El, the creator god, whose wife was Asherah. Their offspring were Baal, Anath (The OT indicates that Ashtoreth, a.k.a. Ishtar, was Baal’s wife), Mot & Ashtoreth. Dagon, Resheph, Shulman and Koshar were other gods of this pantheon. The cultic practices included animal sacrifices at high places; sacred groves, trees or carved wooden images of Asherah. Divination, snake worship and ritual prostitution were practiced. Sexual rites were supposed to ensure fertility of people, animals and lands. Edomite Pantheon The primary Edomite deity was Qos (a.k.a. Quas). Many Edomite personal names included Qos in the suffix much like YHWH is used in Hebrew names. Egyptian Pantheon2 Egyptian religion was never unified. Typically deities were prominent by locale. Only priests worshipped in the temples of the great gods and only when the gods were on parade did the populace get to worship them. These 'great gods' were treated like human kings by the priesthood: awakened in the morning with song; washed and dressed the image; served breakfast, lunch and dinner.

  • The Fragmentation of Being and the Path Beyond the Void 2185 Copyright 1994 Kent D
DRAFT Fragment 48 THE HOUSE OF BAAL Next we will consider the house of Baal who is the twin of Agenor. Agenor means the “manly,” whereas Baal means “lord.” In Baal is Belus. Within the Judeo- Christian religious tradition, Baal is the archetypal adversary to the God of the Old Testament. No strange god, however, is depicted more wicked, immoral and abominable than the storm god Ba’al Hadad, whose cult appears to have been a great rival to Yahwism at certain times in Israel’s history. In the bible we read how the prophets of Ba’al and Yahweh persecuted and killed one another, and how the kings of Israel wavered in their attitudes to these gods, thereby provoking the jealousy of Yahweh who tolerated no other god beside him. Thus, it appears that the worship of Ba’al Hadad was a greater threat to Yahwism than that of any other god, and this fact, perhaps more than the actual character of the Ba’al cult, may be the reason for the Hebrew aversion against it. THE HOUSE OF BAAL Whereas Ba’al became hated by the true Yahwist, Yahweh was the national god of Israel to whose glory the Hebrew Bible is written. Yahweh is also called El. That El is a proper name and not only the appelative, meaning “god” is proven by several passages in the Bible. According to the Genesis account, El revealed himself to Abraham and led him into Canaan where not only Abraham and his family worshiped El, but also the Canaanites themselves.

But should you find anything in this work compelling on account of its being lucid, know that I am not responsible. Not long ago, you see, I was brought up on charges of obscurantisme, although the only “terroristic” aspects of it were self- directed—“Vous avez mal compris; vous êtes idiot.”1 But I’ve been rehabilitated, or perhaps, like Aphrodite in Iliad 5 (if you buy my reading), habilitated for the first time, to the joys of clearer prose. My committee is responsible for this, especially my chair Richard Janko and he who first intervened, Benjamin Fortson. I thank them. If something in here should appear refined, again this is likely owing to the good taste of my committee. And if something should appear peculiarly sensitive, empathic even, then it was the humanity of my committee that enabled, or at least amplified, this, too.

PART TWO ORACLES AGAINST THE NATIONS JEREMIAH 25:15-38 and 46-51 NOTE. In the Greek Septuagint Version the ‘Oracles against the Nations’ (which are numbered as chapters 46-51 in the Hebrew Bible) are inserted into chapter 25:15-38. Not only the placing of the Oracles, but also the sequence is different from the Hebrew Bible. I have decided to follow the Greek by placing the Oracles here, as this probably represents the order in an earlier Hebrew Version. However I will be following the same sequence as the Hebrew Bible. The Header of every odd page gives the Hebrew reference. The reference to the Greek is included in brackets. 177 Judging the Nations 25:15For thus YHWH, the God of Israel, said to In the Greek Septuagint Version, me: Take from my hand this cup of the wine this passage is found in chapter of wrath, and make all the nations to whom 32:15-29, after the ‘oracles against I send you drink it. 16They shall drink and the nations’ which are in chapters stagger and go out of their minds because 25:14 to 32:14 in the Septuagint. of the sword that I am sending among McKane comes down on the side of them. those who think that it is probable 17So I took the cup from YHWH’s hand, and that Jeremiah’s prophetic mission made all the nations to whom YHWH sent was directed to Judah, and that he me drink it: 18Jerusalem and the towns of did not utter the ‘oracles against Judah, its kings and officials, to make them foreign nations’ (see his commen- a desolation and a waste, an object of hiss- tary page 647; see also the com- ing and of cursing, as they are today; 19Phar- mentary on Jeremiah 1:5,10.

Operatic Danaids Peter Burian ([email protected]) CAMWS 2018 1. Ancient sources A. Apollodorus Bibliotheca 2.1.5 But the sons of Aegyptus came to Argos, and exhorted Danaus to lay aside his enmity, and begged to marry his daughters. Now Danaus distrusted their professions and bore them a grudge on account of his exile; nevertheless, he consented to the marriage and allotted the damsels among them. First, they picked out Hypermnestra as the eldest to be the wife of Lynceus…. When they had got their brides by lot, Danaus made a feast and gave his daughters daggers; and they slew their bridegrooms as they slept, all but Hypermnestra; for she saved Lynceus because he had respected her virginity: wherefore Danaus shut her up and kept her under ward. But the rest of the daughters of Danaus buried the heads of their bridegrooms in Lerna and paid funeral honors to their bodies in front of the city; and Athena and Hermes purified them at the command of Zeus. Danaus afterwards united Hypermnestra to Lynceus; and bestowed his other daughters on the victors in an athletic contest. (trans. J. G. Frazer) B. Hyginus Fabulae 168 Danaus son of Belus had 50 daughters by several wives. His brother Aegyptus had just as many sons, and he wanted to kill his brother Danaus and his daughters so that he alone would possess his father's kingdom. When Danaus first outage is realized what was going on, he fled from Africa to Argos with the help of Minerva, who, they say, built the first two-prowed ship so that Danaus when Egypt is found out could escape.
