Yates, Ph.D. Introduction Timothy Polk has noted, “Nothing distinguishes the book of Jeremiah from earlier works of prophecy quite so much as the attention it devotes to the person of the prophet and the prominence it accords the prophetic ‘I’, and few things receive more scholarly comment.”1 More than simply providing a biographical or psychological portrait of the prophet, the book presents Jeremiah as a theological symbol who embodies in his person the word of Yahweh and the office of prophet. 2 In fact, the figure of Jeremiah is so central that a theology of the book of Jeremiah “cannot be formulated without taking into account the person of the prophet, as the book presents him.”3 The purpose of this study is to explore how Jeremiah the person functions as a theological symbol and what these motifs contribute to the overall theology of the book of Jeremiah. -

Barton Payne [p.50] The four chapters of Isaiah 36-39 that appear also in II Kings 18-20 and that contain historical dialog between the prophet and his king, Hezekiah, have produced more critical debate than any other section of I and II Kings.1 They furnish also some of our primary evidence for the unity of the Book of Isaiah,2 forming, as Delitzsch has put it, a “bridge” to the prophecies that follow.3 A thorough treatment of this evidence hence becomes impossible under present limitations. The writer would seek, however, to indicate three specific areas within this larger discussion in which sharpened awareness may contribute to a defense of the total authority of Scripture. L. CONDITIONING FACTORS IN EVANGELICALISM’S APPROACH TO ISAIAH 36-39 If we take, for example, such a question as the relation of Isaiah 36-39 to II Kings 18-20, it appears at the outset that liberal and conservative writers reach opposite conclusions because of their respective methodologies. The liberal, e.g. S.R. Driver, limits his admissable evidence to inductive comparisons of literary detail and of thematic concepts; he thus decides in favor of the priority of Kings.4 The conservative, e.g. Franz Delitzsch, while utilizing historical prose style as a confirmatory factor, concentrates on two reasons that arise (1) out of an analogy with other sections of Kings and Isaiah and (2) out of the authority of Chronicles, deductively applied to the chapters in question; he thus insists upon the originality of Isaiah.5 Bible believing scholars appear to be conditioned by five distinctive principles. -

In the Greek Septuagint Version the ‘Oracles against the Nations’ (which are numbered as chapters 46-51 in the Hebrew Bible) are inserted into chapter 25:15-38. Not only the placing of the Oracles, but also the sequence is different from the Hebrew Bible. I have decided to follow the Greek by placing the Oracles here, as this probably represents the order in an earlier Hebrew Version. However I will be following the same sequence as the Hebrew Bible. The Header of every odd page gives the Hebrew reference. ISRAEL Jeremiah 51:5 By Raymond White Who owns the land of Israel? The Jews do. God gave them that land. God made this planet so he has the right to give it to who ever he wants. 1 Chronicles 16:18 Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance. Psalms 105:8 He hath remembered his covenant for ever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations. :9 Which covenant he made with Abraham, and his oath unto Isaac; :10 And confirmed the same unto Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant; :11 Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance: [1] JEWISH DESTINY Why are there always Jews? Hitler couldn’t kill them off, the Inquisition couldn’t, the Romans, Babylonians, and Assyrians, each in their turn had their shot at eliminating the Jews. All other ancient peoples are gone, social extinction, their survivors morphing into different societies and cultures (e.g., Medes became today’s Kurds). But the Jews are still here, only the Jews, and no one else. Why? Because God wants them here. But why? Psalms 108:8 Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine; Ephraim also is the strength of mine head; Judah is my lawgiver. It is the Jews who taught the world law and civility, and still do today. It is their divine destiny, they can’t escape it any more than Jonah could escape his trip to Nineveh. And it is the reason that Jesus Christ is a Jew. -

THE ARRANGEMENT OF JEREMIAH'S PROPHECIES J. BARTON PAYNE Evangelicalism can find value in a clarification of its thinking about the ar- rangement of Jeremiah's prophecies. Improved understanding is to be desired, both for the guidance of our own constituency, who find the unelaborated order of the Book perplexing,1 and for the answering of our contemporary critics, who reiterate the hopelessness of discovering consistency within Jeremiah's pages.2 The following study therefore attempts (i) to specify certain basic assumptions which distinguish evangelicalism's approach to the organization of the prophecy; (ii) to analyze the types of evidence by which its chapters may be dated and from these to formulate a chronological picture of their sequence; and (iii) to postulate an explanation for the present arrangement of the Book. I. Evangelical Presuppositions Because of their belief in the inerrancy of Jeremiah, evangelical scholars accept at face value the title its compiler has assigned to it, namely that this prophecy is "the words of Jeremiah" (1:1) : his intent, that is, is to teach a uni- formly Jerernianic authenticity, right up to the final 52nd chapter. With this agrees his declaration in 51:64, "Thus far are the words of Jeremiah,"3 The effect of this presupposition is indeed pervasive in distinguishing conservative from liberal in- terpretation; for, as expressed over a quarter of a century ago in The Princeton Theological Review. There is scarcely a passage in the Book the authenticity of which has been allowed to pass without some from of challenge; nor is it with- out significance that it is on some of the richest and loftiest portions of Jeremiah's message that this process of dissection has been put into most active operation.4 A modern critic such as James Muilenburg can thus propose extended oral circu- larization with resultant expansions of Jeremiah's prophecies;5 and J. -
