A Ficção Científica De Acordo Com Os Futurians Science Fiction According
Futurians. Abstract: The Futurian Society of New York, or simply The Futurians, was a group of fans and later writers and editors of science fiction, which existed from 1938 to 1945. The period is generally remembered for the role of editor John Cambpell Jr. at the head of Astounding Science Fiction. The magazine was, in fact, the main pulp at the time and shaped much of what is understood by science fiction until today. The Futurians were, in a way, an opposition to Campbell and his project. Three members of the group became editors as well and were responsible for six different pulp magazines, in which dozens of stories were published by the Futurians. -

The Retro Hugo Awards Ceremony celebrates the science fiction that attendees would have known at the time of the very first Worldcon held in New York 75 years ago. The Hugo Awards have been presented at Worldcons since 1953, but that means that a lot of earlier works - some by very famous names - have not had their chance to be awarded this prestigious honour. The Retro Hugo Awards seeks to redress that balance and showcase the wealth of talent on show at the time. And we intend to have some fun whilst doing it! Tonight, we will try and take you back to 1939, complete with period costumes, retro- futuristic stylings, and live music from the Brideshead Ballroom Stompers. -

PREFACE A careful analysis of prefaces to histories and other books as well shows them to be occupied, almost without exception, in bemoaning the inaccuracies, limitations, and general worthlessness of the work being introduced. This will not be an exception. This is a kind of cross between a set of memoirs and a history. I have tried to cover, at least thinly, all aspects of the purely fan field, but, as a glance at the table of topics will show, I am able to go much more into detail about those parts with which I am better acquainted. -

It should ho remarked, however, that fans mako many allusions to material in prozines, fanzines, and other places, which no reference work could cover completely. Certain fields havo been ex cluded from the scope of the Eancyclopedia "because they are well taken care of elsewhere. While nicknames of fans and pet names of fan magazines are identified hero, biographies have heen left to the various ‘Who's Whos of fandom, and fan zines in detail to Dr Swisher's excellent S-F Check-List. Despite our efforts for accuracy and completeness, many errors and omissions will no douht he discovered heroin. The editor will appreciate receiving corrective information. It is sug gested that those who have little or no acquaintance with fantasy or fan activity read the articles on those subjects first, then look up, in the normal alphabeti cal place, expressions not understood which have been used in those two articles. It has seomed more efficient for the probable uses of this handbook, and economi cal of space, to give short articles on many subjects rather than long articles on a few broad subjects. To find a desired subject, look first under the word that you have in mind. -
