A Brush With the Air Force 42 AIR FORCE Magazine / July 2007 prototype for Corkin was Air Force Col. Milton Caniff was out front with “Terry and Philip Cochran, a noted World War II pilot and leader of air commandos in the Pirates,” but other cartoonists also found Burma. (See “The All-American Air- their calling in the wild blue yonder. man,” March 2000, p. 52.) He became a continuing character in “Terry.” In a famous “Terry and the Pirates” Sunday page from 1943, Corkin opened with, “Let’s take a walk, Terry,” and then delivered an inspirational talk about A Brush With the war and the Air Force as he and the newly fledged pilot Terry strolled around the flight line. The page was “read” into the Congressional Record and reported in the newspapers. Terry, Flip, and their colleagues had a great following among airmen, and the Air Force By John T. Correll the strip had considerable morale and public relations value. Gen. Henry H. “Hap” Arnold, Chief of the Army Air Forces, assigned an officer to as- sist Caniff with any technical details he needed. Caniff produced another strip, “Male Call,” without charge for camp and base newspapers. It featured Miss Lace, who was reminiscent of the Dragon Lady but less standoffish. It is difficult today to comprehend what a big deal the funnies used to be. Everybody read the comic strips. Characters were as well known as movie stars. The strips were printed much larger than present comic strips are. On Sunday, a popular strip might get a whole color page to itself. -

Zuk1 GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY tzuk1 [AT] gsu.edu Comic-Con International: San Diego, known colloquially as Comic-Con, is one of the largest and most influential fan conventions in the world. Comic-Con as an event and as a brand has impacted fandom, popular culture, and, more importantly, for Erin Hanna, the media industries in Hollywood. Since its inception, Comic-Con has been intertwined with the media industries: comic creators and industry professionals attended the very first conven- tion. Comic-Con has, however, expanded beyond comic books to include all popular media and has opened its doors to industry creatives, synergistic promotion, and audience testing, making Comic-Con a useful event for Hollywood’s buzz machine.2 Comic-Con, as both an exclusive event and a franchise, has made fan conventions widely popular (and lucrative) with both audiences and global pop- ular culture industries. In this book, Hanna explores how Hollywood studios and related industries foster the appeal of exclusivity as a means of promotion that exploits fan labor. Media Industries 7.2 (2020) In Only at Comic-Con, Erin Hanna uses a framework of exclusivity to dismantle the power structures embedded in fan conventions generally and Comic-Con specifically. According to Hanna, “exclusivity is not defined by presences at all, but by the power to produce absences.”3 Hanna outlines the power dynamics between media industry representatives and conven- tion organizers (and fans), between fans and convention staff, and between fans themselves. -

A ficção científica de acordo com os Futurians Science Fiction According to the Futurians Andreya Susane Seiffert1 DOI: 10.19177/memorare.v8e12021204-216 Resumo: The Futurian Society of New York, ou simplesmente The Futurians, foi um grupo de fãs e posteriormente escritores e editores de ficção científica, que existiu de 1938 a 1945. O período é geralmente lembrado pela atuação do editor John Cambpell Jr. à frente da Astounding Science Fiction. A revista era, de fato, a principal pulp à época e moldou muito do que se entende por ficção científica até hoje. Os Futurians eram, de certa forma, uma oposição a Campbell e seu projeto. Três membros do grupo viraram editores também e foram responsáveis por seis revistas pulps diferentes, em que foram publicadas dezenas de histórias com autoria dos Futurians. Esse artigo analisa parte desse material e procura fazer um pequeno panorama de como os Futurians pensaram e praticaram a ficção científica no início da década de 1940. Abstract: The Futurian Society of New York, or simply The Futurians, was a group of fans and later writers and editors of science fiction, which existed from 1938 to 1945. The period is generally remembered for the role of editor John Cambpell Jr. at the head of Astounding Science Fiction. The magazine was, in fact, the main pulp at the time and shaped much of what is understood by science fiction until today. The Futurians were, in a way, an opposition to Campbell and his project. Three members of the group became editors as well and were responsible for six different pulp magazines, in which dozens of stories were published by the Futurians.
