INTRODUCTION A storm crossing south-west Britain on the evening of 13th December I981, coinciding with high water of a spring tide, caused coastal flooding in the Bristol Channel. The area affected stretched along the south side of the Channel east of Bideford extending up the River Severn almost as far as Gloucester. The worst flooding occurred on the west-facing coast between the mouth of the River Parrett and just north of Weston-Super-Mare. -

AVON BTO REGION News The newsletter for BTO members and volunteers in the BTO Avon Region December 2020 Welcome to the BTO Avon Newsletter. This newsletter is aimed at providing local communication between the BTO and its members and volunteers in our county covering a variety of topics including gaps in surveys, what’s happening nationally as well as locally. What a year it’s been so far! Our world has changed, and so much of the Spring survey work just wasn’t possible. However, being outside is now being recognised as by far the healthy option: it’s good for you physically and mentally, and you’re less likely to catch COVID-19. Appreciation of nature is surely an inherent part of being a BTO supporter, so we were all well aware of the benefits of watching birds. Membership BTO Membership in Avon currently stands at 331 members with the total number of members and non members making up the BTO Avon community standing at 903. Hopefully 2021 will see an increase in membership and volunteers as we try to raise the profile of the BTO in the region. Good communication from BTO nationally but most importantly BTO Avon locally is essential to increase membership as we begin to try to encourage a few more people to join. Those people that are already members will know that as part of their subscription they receive BTO News four times a year covering a variety of BTO topics and an Annual Review. There is also a 15% reduction in the cost of a BTO Training Course to improve your identification, fieldcraft and survey skills and enrich your birdwatching. -
Shirehampton Remount Depot
Shirehampton Remount Depot During World War I the main form of transport for troops, munitions and supplies was the horse or mule. The military effort on the Western Front from August 1914 to November 1918 required a continual supply of these animals. Several Remount Depots were set up across the UK to help maintain this supply. Shirehampton was one of the largest and over 300,000 horses passed through Shirehapmton and Avonmouth between 1914 and 1918. By 1915 most of the animals were shipped over from Canada or the US to be stabled at Shirehampton before they were sent to the front as required. Andy O’Brien - WECA’s transport thinking and funding strategies (Pages 19-167) STATEMENT 1 – DICK DANIEL I am submitting the BATA reasons for instead investing in a tram / light-rail network for Bristol, Bath and the region. A proposal which will actually get people to switch from cars to trams, as I say in the submission, a switch that has never been demonstrated by buses, we are not against buses, we want buses, we want trams to be the backbone feed and linked to a comprehensive network of bus routes. I have also attached a chart showing the rise in passages numbers of the Manchester tram Metrolink, which has increased the numbers traveling by tram almost every year and now stands at 44.3 million journeys in the 2019/20 financial year. Also a short video of trams in the historic centre of Seville. A more technical document on the 'Technical, sociological and economic reasons why trams are an essential backbone to a bus based transport system’.
