Once Upon an Ideology Exploring the Ideologies and Identities of Female Figures Through a Selection of Classic and Contemporary Once Upon an Ideology Exploring the ideologies and identities of female figures through a selection of classic and contemporary fairy tales Miriam Walsh 0665894 Ph.D. Thesis Mary Immaculate College University of Limerick Supervisor: Dr. Eugene O’Brien Submitted to Mary Immaculate College: ___________ Abstract This thesis examines the ideologies and identities of women in selected traditional and contemporary fairy tales. It does this by utilising existing folklore theory but also by drawing on various literary theory theoretical approaches to ensure a comprehensive and rigorous analysis. It draws on the schools of deconstruction, feminism and psychoanalysis to analyse the role of the female in fairy tales, and also, to examine how the ideologies governing them affect identity construction, and also the representations of female identity in contemporary culture. The texts analysed are divided into two sections. The first section uses the literary texts of Cinderella and its modern counterpart Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, and also explores the traditional tale of Bluebeard along with the contemporary envisioning The Bloody Chamber. The second section analyses modern interpretive filmic texts, which lend a voice to the previously silent figures of the traditional tales. The texts to be discussed are Frozen, Maleficent and Snow White and the Huntsman. This project engages with traditional and contemporary fairy tales, in both literary and filmic genres. It examines these texts as vehicles of gender ideology, and also as agents of change in that ideological position. This project suggests that contemporary tales, such as Frozen and Maleficent, offer a fresh ideological perspective, which complicates and humanises the previously one-dimensional evil female figure. It will look at how these modern representations struggle against the binary oppositions of good versus evil perpetuated by traditional tales. The analysis is not limited to the female figures in situ, as it also shows how the fears and issues of these representations are reflected in contemporary society. It interrogates the dynamic between the ii tales as constituted by prevailing ideologies and between the tales as instruments of ideological change.     Culture | Volume 1 Issue 1 | May 2017 13 Gina Jibran Once upon a time becoming a princess occurred only when marrying a prince. Nowadays, the yearning to become a princess satisfies more than obtaining the status. Pretending to be a princess is seen to be just as fulfilling. What is it about being a princess that brings contentment? Specifically, what is it about wearing an oversized dress and a tiara that makes life more fascinating for young girls? Disney fairytales such as Snow White and Cinderella have helped popularize the motif of princesses. Girls can buy Cinderella costumes or visit their favourite princess at Disneyland. This helps create the notion that becoming a princess is something to be desired. It is important to note, that life as a princess is hardly ever visited in stories such as Grimm’s Little Snow‐White, or even Disney’s Cinderella. In fact, these tales end right after a girl marries prince charming and obtains the princess status. The sole insight readers gain about life as a princess is that, ‘they lived happily ever after’—a sentence stated at the end of many Disney fairytales. The company Fairytale Land, demonstrates how contemporary society recreates the princess motif. The ability to facilitate the transformation of a young girl to become a princess is promoted at Fairytale Land. Fairytale Land, however, distorts Disney’s focus on becoming a princess into a process whereby young girls are allowed to live that life of luxury. In the focus on being a princess, one then fixates on contemporary female ideals of beauty.

Socially and culturally constructed definitions of beauty based on skin tone, represent Western realities and continue to sustain beauty ideals that shape the beliefs and practices around fair skin for women. The study of skin tone and its relationship to self-esteem is essential in expanding upon the limited research examining the intersections between body image and the sociocultural experiences of South Asian Indian women. Against the backdrop of Western hegemony, the research discusses how a fair skin beauty ideal impacts different generations of women in New Delhi. More specifically, investigating the relationship between skin tone and self-esteem among women in South Asian families through a multigenerational comparison, provides a deeper understanding of how skin tone bias is perpetuated, while reinforcing and normalizing white heteropatriarchy. Skin tone bias is disseminated through the family, culture and media. The narratives highlight how skin tone bias manifests itself among adult women in different South Asian family units according to their life stage and membership in the family.

This study aims to analyze the gender performance of the main female character in Cassandra Clare's "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones." Clary Fray, the female protagonist who is determined to save her missing mother, is portrayed as a feminine-masculine character through her performance by joining Shadowhunter. As the qualitative method and Gender Performativity by Judith Butler are applied to the discussion, the study discovers that Clary Fray learns to behave in a certain way by imitating some figures to attain a certain ideal of beauty in order to be accepted by society.     Article Balancing Gender and Power: How Disney’s Hercules Fails to Go the Distance Cassandra Primo Departments of Business and Sociology, McDaniel College, Westminster, MD 21157, USA; [email protected] Received: 26 September 2018; Accepted: 14 November; Published: 16 November 2018 Abstract: Disney’s Hercules (1997) includes multiple examples of gender tropes throughout the film that provide a hodgepodge of portrayals of traditional conceptions of masculinity and femininity. Hercules’ phenomenal strength and idealized masculine body, coupled with his decision to relinquish power at the end of the film, may have resulted in a character lacking resonance because of a hybridization of stereotypically male and female traits. The film pivots from hypermasculinity to a noncohesive male identity that valorizes the traditionally-feminine trait of selflessness. This incongruous mixture of traits that comprise masculinity and femininity conflicts with stereotypical gender traits that characterize most Disney princes and princesses. As a result of the mixed messages pertaining to gender, Hercules does not appear to have spurred more progressive portrayals of masculinity in subsequent Disney movies, showing the complexity underlying gender stereotypes. The animated film is a modernization of the classic myth in which the eponymous hero is a physically intimidating protagonist that epitomizes manhood.

Created when an increasing number of women turned to the scholarly arts, in particular painting and poetry, these paintings documented the more receptive attitude of literati toward talented women and their support in the social and artistic lives of female intellectuals. These pictures show the women cultivating themselves through literati activities and poetic meditation in nature or gardens, common tropes in portraits of male scholars. The predominantly male patrons, painters, and colophon authors all took part in the formation of the women’s public identities as poets and artists; the first two determined the visual representations, and the third, through writings, confirmed and elaborated on the designated identities.

As Jack Zipes observes: ‘The cultural evolution of the fairy tale is closely bound historically to all kinds of storytelling and different civilizing processes that have undergirded the formation of nation-states.’143 Studying fairy tales thus opens a window onto European history and cultures, ideologies, and aesthetics.

But they are not as simple as they look. The present study attempts to show how classical fairy tales and their Disney adaptations manifest gender inequality by featuring submissive heroines, masculine heroes, and evil witches. The study then suggests how feminine beauty ideal, sexism, marriage, and binary opposition are dominant themes in these adaptations. However, Tangled deviates from this criterion of gender inequality and disrupts the existence of sexism and binary oppositions by giving more independent roles to both the male and female characters. The study concludes with the opinion that while the previous Disney films are stereotypical, Tangled has enhanced its characterization by depicting ambitious heroine, dynamic hero, and the peculiar antagonist who has both positive and negative traits.
