Historians recognize that Paul was one of the most important men in all of world history. It was largely through his ministry that the message of Christianity was brought to much of the urban society of the Roman Empire within one generation. To better appreciate Paul’s ministry and impact, read the Scriptures, consider and discuss the following questions: 1. We first meet Paul in Scripture when Stephen was being stoned (Acts 7:54-60). At that time he was then called Saul. What role did Saul have in Stephen’s stoning? What impression might the dying Stephen’s words and behavior have on Saul? 2. Though born in Tarsus in Asia Minor, Paul was raised in Jerusalem, where he was a student of the beloved Gamaliel. What was Gamaliel’s attitude to the new sect of Christians? Why might Saul’s attitude differ so markedly from his teacher (Acts 22:3; 5:34-39; cf. 8:3; 9:1-2)? 3. Saul was not seeking the Lord Jesus, but the Lord was seeking him and spoke to Saul as he was on his way to Damascus to further persecute the Christians (Acts 9:1-7). -

6-27-21 Who is Right, Paul or Barnabas? Acts 15:34-41. Everyone disagrees with someone at one 2me or another. Chris2ans are not exempt; we fight and whine with the best of them. Some2mes we even try to use the scriptures to win our arguments. Now, that’s not necessarily a bad thing but the inten2on in the heart of doing it can be. The N.T. records some of the early arguments among believers. When you read Romans and I Corinthians, you discover that Chris2ans disagreed on things like ea2ng meat offered to idols, on whether to observe the Sabbath Day, or whether to eat meat or be a vegetarian, and on whether to drink wine. We can read in Colossians a church that was torn by controversy over the proper role of angels, New Moon celebra2ons, and the proper diet for spiritual Chris2ans. In Thessalonica, the young church was deeply confused about the Second Coming of Christ. In Philippi there was evidently a major power struggle within the church, which is why Philippians contains such a strong plea for unity. Today, I am not speaking about disagreements over the fundamental, non-nego2able doctrines. These truths are not “up for grabs,” as if we could decide whether we believe that Jesus is God or whether we believe in the Second Coming, or deny the virgin birth, Jesus sinless life, death, burial and resurrec2on, or that saving faith is found by the gracious works of Jesus. Those truths belong to the “faith which was once for all delivered to the saints” (JuDe 3) In this message we are looking at what we might call Category 2 disagreements, areas of doctrine or prac2ce not involving the fundamentals of the Chris2an faith. -

BIBUOTHECA SACRA 155 (July-September 1998): 299-315 THE CESSATION OF HEALING MIRACLES IN PAUL'S MINISTRY τ Gary W. Derickson .^L. his article addresses the issue of the cessation of the exer cise of the gift of healing by the apostle Paul on the basis of the historical-theological evidence of the New Testament record. Three lines of evidence suggest that Paul was unable to perform healing miracles near the end of his ministry. The first line of evidence comes from a study of Pauline literature. The second line of evidence is from an evaluation of the record of the three men Paul failed to heal, their circumstances, and arguments that Paul would have healed them if he could. A third line of evidence stems from Hebrews 2:3-4. These three areas of evidence indi cate that miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit were no longer being distributed to the body of Christ by the end of the first century, but that the church was being given gifted individuals (Eph. 2:20; 4:11). Nonmiraculous spiritual gifts, of course, continued to be given to believers by the Holy Spirit. Further, even those who had previously had the ability to perform miracles were no longer able to exercise that gift as they had previously done. God's inter ventions through individuals gradually ceased in the waning years of the first century. T S S HE ANCTUARY ERIES A Compilation of Saint U News Articles h ON THE g Saints Depicted in the Murals & Statuary of Saint Ursula Church OUR CHURCH, LIVE IN HRIST, A C LED BY THE APOSTLES O ver the main doors of St. Ursula Church, the large window pictures the Apostles looking upward to an ascending Jesus. Directly opposite facing the congregation is the wall with the new painting of the Apostles. The journey of faith we all make begins with the teaching of the Apostles, leads us through Baptism, toward altar and the Apostles guiding us by pulpit and altar to Christ himself pictured so clearly on the three-fold front of the Tabernacle. The lively multi-experiences of all those on the journey are reflected in the multi-colors of the pillars. W e are all connected by Christ with whom we journey, He the vine, we the branches, uniting us in faith, hope, and love connected to the Apostles and one another. O ur newly redone interior, rededicated on June 16, 2013, was the result of a collaboration between our many parishioners, the Intelligent Design Group (architect), the artistic designs of New Guild Studios, and the management and supervision of many craftsmen and technicians by Landau Building Company. I n March 2014, the Landau Building Company, in a category with four other projects, won a first place award from the Master Builders Association in the area of “Excellence in Craftsmanship by a General Contractor” for their work on the renovations at St. Ursula. A fter the extensive renovation to the church, our parish community began asking questions about the Apostles on the Sanctuary wall and wishing to know who they were.
