These were mainly restricted meetings midweek for lower-grade runners but a number of Clubs are open which had not traditionally held racemeetings were granted on- course-betting-only permits. The Riccarton Turf Club was one of and will close 20 October 2019 these. Prior to the NZ Cup Meeting The first of these long forgotten events was in 1978 and the last in 1992 when public demand resulted in the discontinuation of meetings of this nature. Punters did not want to back a horse one week and find they missed out on backing it next time due to it starting at an oncourse only meeting. Incredible to think nowadays but that last oncourse meeting recorded an oncourse turnover in excess of quarter of a million dollars. Since 1992 the Riccarton Turf Club had been active in the conducting and management of trials. As well as serving a critical need for stakeholders they were fun filled occasions for owners and racing fans. The merger in 2003 of fellow provincial partners the North Canterbury, Amberley, and Hororata Racing Clubs with the Canterbury Jockey Club to form Canterbury Racing gave the Riccarton Turf Club an opportunity to be involved again with a race day. Now known as Riccarton Park-Riccarton Turf Club that ‘first’ meeting took place on Thursday 12 February 2004 being the time of year that the oncourse meeting was held and has now successfully evolved into the management of the second day of the Autumn Racing Season featuring two listed races as well as the traditional ‘Founders Cup’. In 2004 the Founders Cup was presented to the winner of the 2 and 3 year old event, after being won by Coup Liner at Bank Peninsula in 2002. It is now securely attached to the open staying race on the programme at Riccarton Park. Riccarton Turf Club stalwarts Viv Jack, Norm Davison and Winsome Shaw had been the backbone of the Club up to and throughout the merger process and took credit for the rejuvenation of the raceday Applications available committee. Norm Davison, Tom Thomson, Tom Toplis, Jack O’Dea and now Glenn Lloyd have steered and grown an enthusiastic and City Member dedicated group of people who are the committee behind todays Young City Member racemeeting. Provincial Member Back at the time of the merger and the allocation of a raceday by the Board of the Canterbury Jockey Club Riccarton Turf spokesperson Norm Davison, said “We are still the trials people but this opportunity does give us the chance to highlight our involvement and get people Join online at riccartonpark.co.nz involved fully in raceday”.
