Possible Ideas 1 Dundee 2017 Dundee 2017 PUBLIC IDEAS FOR EVENTS (NON SIGNATURE / MAJOR) ROYAL ARCH THEME A BUILDING PROJECTS B RIVER TRANSPORT THEME R WHALING THEME W WEDUNDEE ID PUBLIC IDEAS FOR EVENTS (NON SIGNATURE / CATEGORY MAJOR) 4653 Rebuild the a Royal Arch. A 4558 The Royal Arch rebuilt . It was beautiful . A 4958 Royal Arch rebuilt as was magnificent piece of architecture and A would bring some history back to Dundee 5034 A replica Royal Arch built - It is such a shame it was destroyed and with a bid for city of culture and V and A etc A new royal Arch would A be a fabulous idea 5141 The Victoria Arch rebuilt or alternatively an Elizabeth Arch perhaps? A 5191 I'd love to see the Royal Arch reinstated somewhere down at the waterfront. It was a magnificent structure and would look fantastic there again. It should never have been destroyed. Also I think we need an American themed 10 pin bowling alley which is easily A accessible to visitors and Dundonians alike. The city's young and old are missing out on this great way of socialising. 5264 Rebuild the Royal Arch A Broughty Castle redevelopment Broughty Castle. Fiona Sinclair. £500,000 B Redevelopment of the Broughty Ferry Castle Museum Services Milestones: Adding a new dimension to Dundee's The Old Steeple. Fiona Sinclair. £22,100 - HLF secured. £40,000 - HLF Research of and display of medieval carved stones in the museum B Medieval Carved Stones application. collection. 4601 A waterfront festival, spread along the riverside footpath - could have a Broughty Ferry part and then docks & airport section. Included must be trips on the water (remember the speed boat competition). Also a pre-event for art works, photography and other R artistic representations of the river. And finally use the excellent musical talents (singing & playing) of the city's children to perform a specially composed piece of music. 4811 Boat trips up the Tay to the communities along the river. Old R steamer boats 4815 River taxis....let others see how spectacular Dundee is from the water....this idea fits all themes, people, environment, light and the R star of the show, the river itself, let Dundee be seen in 2017 4920 river 'taxis', taking commuters, shoppers back to the Ferry of an R evening. 4934 a water taxi connecting newport and dundee R 5024 a means of travelling along the river from west to east (could include Perth, Dundee West, Dundee Central, Broughty Ferry, Monifieth, Carnoustie and Arbroath. Something similar to the CityCat service which operates in Brisbane, Australia. This would be a great R attraction for visitors and would also be a fantastic thing for locals to use day-to-day. The river is our greatest asset, lets use it. An exhibition and associated events/guided walks explaining the history of whaling in Dundee, and the importance of whale oil to the jute industry. Maybe the Rep could W adapt 'Whales for the Wizard' for the stage? 4806 A sculpture of a whaling skiff with the crew rowing and harpooning a whale. The whale would generate a large fountain of water. This would be sited in the river - possibly on the rocks just to the east of the road bridge. It would be iconic to have a large fountain in the W river and would also celebrate our whaling heritage and the living we have made from the river/port. Radio 1's big weekend in Dundee was a huge success but nothing has been held since. 4546 A marked walking trail, taking in all historical and cultural parts of the City (like the Freedom Trail in Boston, Mass.) with maps and detailed information. 4600 The World of Dundee/Dundee in the World. An invitation to other towns/cities called Dundee to send representatives to THE Dundee on a set date. At the same time inviting expatriates from around the world to attend the ‘World Gathering of the Dundonians' they could then gather in the town square in view of the city webcam and send greetings to the world. 4607 Free big screen film nights in the City Square or other locations (with a Dundee connection). A giant Beano comic using real kids (not quite thought this through, but it could maybe form a giant live Beano photoshoot - a living comic strip.) 4637 Productions from the Edinburgh fringe. Exhibitions from the V&A. A marina in Dundee. More restaurants overlooking the Tay 4641 An outdoor drive-in cinema/live performance area using Camperdown House as the backdrop/focus. This could easily rival Somerset House in London. 4645 Bio - Collosus. David Mach's 90-foot nude women, 'protecting' the entry to DJCAD. 4663 Large illuminated sign on rear of Caird Hall saying WELCOME TO DUNDEE Which will be seen as people cross the Tay Bridge, so inviting them in to Dundee 4697 a City Centre museum to DC Thomson comics and personalities. A sure fire winner as an attraction ! 4716 a cultural cafe/restaurant/bar where local people can have a pop-up restaurant serving different tastes of the world every week/month! S:\Events 2013\DUNDEE 2017\WeDundee Submissions\weDundee 2017 - Possible Ideas 3 Dundee 2017 PUBLIC IDEAS FOR EVENTS (NON SIGNATURE / MAJOR) 4723 A 'Green week' where the city very actively tries to reduce the electricity used. Turn off the shop lights after closing time, replace their light with solar powered lamps to increase safety (Dundee is Scotland's sunniest city, lets make use of it!), have a 'Green fair' in the city centre, have people plant fruit trees in public areas and allow people to eat the fruit like the Food Forest in Seattle. Each day, sponsor a different endangered species that's not as well known as the Tiger or Panda, something that will surprise, engage and concern people. 4758 Green roofs. Kids and adults would love the chance to get up onto some of the flat roofs of the city centre and plant some small plants, e.g. throw down grass seeds, wild flowers and mosses. Many of these flat roofs are visible from the University's Tower building making the view of the city more interesting. Many of the University buildings have flat roofs that could be brightened up with some greenery. 4762 I'd like to see a series of "Country Fairs" in City Square where each ethnic group in Dundee showcases their language. food, art, culture and customs. I'm thinking Polish, Turkish, Chinese, Indian, Pakistani (and perhaps even English!) for starters, there may be others. 4792 Magdalen Green with a refurbished playpark and with the bandstand repaired and renovated to its former glory. The Green, which is Dundees' oldest public park, is in a wonderful location is much loved and very well used but it needs capital investment. Last century the Green lost its swimming pool, railway station, tennis courts and bowling green, all it gained was a bit more car park, it's time to put something back! 4836 A celebration of Dundee's big tees. This could be an online guide to where to find the city's most impressive specimen trees and the trees could be decorated with ribbons or lights. 4998 Posters around Edinburgh and Glasgow which tell the great story of what Dundee is. Almost nobody in these cities has ever been to Dundee, and it would inspire them both to go and visit Dundee, but also to aspire for greater things where they live. 5033 Widespread, large scale, planting of perennial wildflower meadows throughout the city, filling waste-ground and roadsides, softening the urban landscape and bringing a huge diversity of wildlife right into built up areas. Neighbourhood involvement to identify and sow neglected areas of ground. Different species mixes in different parts of the city. On such a scale, it would set Dundee apart from every other UK city.

In presenting the " Dundee Post Office Directory" to their Subscribers and the Public, the Publishers have to apologize for the length of time that has passed between the announcement and the appearance of that Work; but a number of unforeseen circumstances, inseparable from the preparation of a new Work, coupled with an anxious desire to be as correct as possible, in connexion with deference to the opinion of many friends as to the time of publication, will, it is hoped, be accepted as an excuse for the delay. That the " Directory" will contain mistakes is readily admitted ; but these will be carefully remedied, and all unneces- sary delay avoided, if the Public shall be so indulgent as to call for another Publication next year, which, in so large a community as Dundee contains, and from the termly shifting of residences and places of business, would seem to be annually necessary.
