Wow! Another year has come and almost gone, and just like the mailman we here at Zollinger Ranch will endure all conditions. Rain, hail, snow, drought, high markets, low markets, skyrocketing feed costs, etc. etc., but we’re still here and devoted to breeding and raising quality horses with good minds, great dispositions, correct conformation, and athletic ability. We continue to raise horses you can do anything on. Almost 50 years ago Wade bought his first Quarter Horse mare. She came from Hamilton, MT in the back of a chicken hauling bus. Later, he bought a beautiful bay son of Prince Bar by Three Bars TB. He ran them on the chariot and also rode them. Later, more horses came along including a little bay mare named Bay Ida Mae by CowboyII by Joe Moore out of Baldys Ida by Baldy Joe by Joe Hancock. She was little, 14 hands, and could really run. She went on to produce a track record holder by Lad Leo and seven other AAA/AA colts including one by the great Azure Te. In 1971, Wade bought Lad Leo, the last own son of the great Leo. Lad, became the cornerstone of the Zollinger breeding program. Like his father, Lad Leo stamped his offspring with correct conformation, good gone, large feet, excellent muscling, intelligence, and of course, a willing disposition. Lad put Wade in business, and his son JX Leo Sun Up and the Lad Leo daughters and granddaughters keep him in business. We are proud of our program and what we have accomplished in the quarter horse industry. This year Qollinger Quarter Horse Ranch is holding our 24th Annual Production Sale on September 8, 2012. We will offer an outstanding selection of bloodline, conformation, color and quality. Our Lad Leo broodmares are the foundation of our breeding program; breeding them sto some of the best bloodlines in the country. Our stallions include Double L Boon by Peptoboonsmal, JX Leo Sun Up by Lad Leo by Leo, CR Bodees R Blue by Bodee Boonsmal, WZ Poco Hollywood – a grandson of Poco Bueno and Bailey Joe, Poco Blakburn Smoke, Dry Speck A Pepper, Money’s Illusion by Dash For Cash, Mr Silver Pistol by Playgun, Dunamo dunnit by Hollywood Dunit, Pecos Little Peppy by Peppy San Badger, and Leo Grande Rio. Sired by NCHA Champion and Hall of Famer, Dry Doc, and out of a daughter of the great performance sire King Fritz, Pepper had a “loaded” pedigree. He was bred to be a top performer and a strong breeding stallion. He was listed in the Top 100 Stallions. Dry Spec A Pepper was the 1986 Eastern Idaho AQ Association Senior Cutting Champion. A daughter, Casey Pepper, was the Idaho Youth Snaffle Bit Champion and a son was the National Youth Champion. A son, Blue, was the IMRA 1997 Champion Heeling horse with winnings of over $20,000. The Working Lines By Larry Thornton . The Big Investment Part 2 This month’s “Working Lines” is going to take a closer look at the sire record of The Big Investment. Last month we saw that The Big Investment brought a new style to the modern pleasure horse. A style that was based on this wonderful conformation. This month we will look at what a bright future this sire had before his untimely death in 1986 at the age of six. Then we will look at one of the reasons why the influence of The Big Investment may continue through his offspring. The Big Investment sired only 129 foals with 93 of them being born in his 1986 and 1987 foal crops. He sired 74 AQHA performers with 66 point earners that have earned 63ROMs and 27 Superior Awards. This gives him an average of 89% point earners/ performers. This gives him 48.8% ROM from foals produced. He has an average of 56 points per performer. Displaying considerable speed himself by winning 20 of his 22 starts, it was his reputation as a sire that made him famous. Bud Warren of Perry, Oklahoma bought Leo in 1947 after achieving considerable success with two of his daughters, Flit and Leota W. Champions Palleo Pete, Miss Meyers, Mona Leta and Bobbie Leo proved his ability to produce speed. An all time leading sire of broodmares, Leo’s daughters produced 14 Champions, including Little Blue Sheep, Kid Meyers and an All American Futurity winner, Goetta. His most famous daughter, Garrett’s Miss Pawhuska – who will be inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame in about 2 months – produced Champions Vanetta Dee, Vannevar and Vandy’s Flash. In addition to speed, Leo’s foals exhibited excellent conformation, Athletic ability, quiet dispositions and common sense. • Comparison of Head Morphometric Traits Within Five Selected Performance Types of Quarter Horses(Eguus Cabullus) Redacted for Privacy
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Elana Morgana Smith for the degree of Master of Science in Animal Science Presented on October 25, 2002 Title: Comparison of Head Morphometric Traits Within Five Selected Performance Types of Quarter Horses(Eguus cabullus) Redacted for privacy Abstract approved: Thomas F. Savage A study was conducted to investigate if morphometric facial measurements could be utilized to differentiate five categorical performance types of Quarter Horses. The five categories being Western, Halter, English, Reining, and Cutting. The measurements were collected from 323 registered Quarter Horses representing animals who ranged in age from one year to 30 years of age and one of three gender (Stallion, Gelding, and Mare) categories. Eight facial measurements were obtained from two geographic areas, Florida and Oregon. A correlation was performed and resulted in a reduction of the data from eight to five facial measurements, due to the presence of facial symmetry. The reduced data was subsequently analyzed by Multivariate Analysis, using the Wilks Lambda Analysis of Variance. The Main effects, age, gender, and categorical performance type were all significant (p<0.0001 to 0.00 1). Of the two-way interactions only age:gender was not significant (p>0.05) and the three- way interaction age:gender:type was also not significant (p>O.O5) Based upon the not significant (J)>O.O5) Based upon the results, the five original performance categories could be reduced to four (English, Halter, Cutting, and Western/Reining). This indicates that there are a number of similarities in facial measurements between the Western and Reining horses.

  • DRY DOC by Glory Ann Kurtz
Million Dollar Sires: DRY DOC By Glory Ann Kurtz Most horsemen will agree that a majority of horses are only "as good as their mothers." Figures are recklessly tossed around in everyday conversation that the mare is responsible for everywhere from 50 to 90 percent of how the colt turns out and though no one has seemed to come up with the scientific answer, it is universal understanding among horsemen that a colt's mother is a very important factor when breeding. If you don't believe it, just check out prices of young horses in the sale ring. A majority of horses selling in the sale ring have great sires, but it is the dam that separates the high sellers from the mediocre. Million-dollar sire Dry Doc is an example of the importance of selective breeding. He was sired by Doc Bar, the legendary sire that revolutionized the cutting horse business, but so were thousands of other horses. What made the difference was his dam, the legendary Poco Lena. In the beginning Although she was characterized by some writers as a "lanky, unwanted weanling daughter of Poco Bueno out of Sheilwin," Poco Lena was first trained and shown by Pine Johnson. She was foaled on the E. Paul Waggoner's 3D Ranch near Arlington, Texas in 1949. But Waggoner gave the bay filly to his manager, Glenn W. Turpin. When she was a 3-year-old, Johnson rode her to her first in a string of records, winning both the Junior registered and NCHA-approved Open cutting, with 33 entries, at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas.
