Playin Strait “Gattlin” – Wow, where do I start on this horse. I showed him as a three year old in the reined cow horse and ranch horse competitions. Won Top Horse at a ranch rodeo as a 5 year old. Chris Sherman has hauled him since the last sale and has heeled on him in the number 15 US ropings and rodeoed on him this summer. Gattlin has a mind that is unreal and such a gentle dispostion which he passes on. The cow in this horse is as cowy as can be and has been since a young age. I went looking for a stallion that would take my program to the top. He’s proven himself to do that.

“Rooster” is a 6 year old that has seen it all, from the sale barn, sorting, versatility ranch horse competitions, branding pen to tying down yearlings in the pasture. He’s been hauled to a few ropings and Lot works good on the heading side but is an outstanding heel horse. He’s had 45 days of calf roping training with Luke Jones. Luke says he feels like a big time rodeo horse. This horse can be riden by anyone, 3 anytime for anything.

“Colonel” - We used this horse as a stud for a couple of years and got some great colts out of him. He got ornery and that was the end of his production. He has always had a super stop and can nearly run backwards. We have had Robert Reid, DVM put some calf roping training on him and he is a true Lot individual. He has a soft touch and a HUGE stop. She is very broke, very gentle 18 and easy going, has wonderful easy going gaits. I have used a flag on her in alley work and she does gates. We have hauled her to dozens of brandings. She will work as a rope horse, a kid horse, a gentleman’s or ladies horse or a trail or pattern horse. I feel she has the potential to do whatever you would ask of her. Tony Rhuter bought her half sister in the last sale and is roping on her in Central Nebraska and doing very well.

“Pud” - As his nickname infers, this guy is a total push over. What a Lot sweetie! He is gentle for anybody. We have used him for everything, he has had a bunch of miles or you can just go out and catch him in 19 the pasture for an easy ride. This family of horses all has such an easy going disposition and a great attitude to get things done. Obviously we have kept several and realized this year we need to offer them. “Marshall” - Again, another favorite. Marshall has been our ‘go to’ colt all through calving season. I roped off him at several brandings and enjoyed his easy going attitude. He has a TON of potential. His Lot dad is selling as Lot 17. He has just as much ability or more and is a huge stopper. The flip side of this colt is that he would work for kids 20 too. I let a young lady, about 12, ride him home at a branding and she fell in love with him. He’s also been used in an alley with a flag and is tracking cattle. His color and style will make everyone look. He is a true dun that roans, has tiger stripes and a cross across his withers. Neat colt!

“Mighty Mouse” - Yes, we call her Mighty Mouse! This little mare may be short of stature but she is all heart. She has kid horse potential written all over here. Rarely shys, is always willing and can go all day. We rounded up a large herd at a branding with only 3 other horses Lot and really struggled, nearly lost the herd 3 times. Mighty Mouse did her job and more, and then I roped calves off her for 2 hours. She 21 has worked an alley with a flag and will be tracking cattle. She is a ‘keeper’ for most anybody whether your grandkids need a new mount or maybe grand dad does, Mighty Mouse would fill the bill. This mare’s mother has raised several horses for families and Cardino Babe raised all 3 of my sons. Ladino Wrangler was 3rd in Reining for me at the State 4-H Horse Show more years ago than I care to remember.

We purchased Power Rancher “PR” in 2001 as a 3 year old and got him broke to ride with the intentions of showing him but a back surgery got in the way. In 2003, I showed him in the Western Nebraska Cutting Association in the All Aged Futurity and ended the year in 6th place by showing 4 times out of 11 shows against 21 other horses. In 2004, I won the Ranchers division of the Ranch Horse Contest at the Central States Fair against 19 horses and won 5th in the cutting section of the Rancher Division of the Nebraska Reined Cow Horse Show at Broken Bow against 28 horses. We have used Power Rancher in all phases of ranch work from the branding corral to doctoring in the pasture and if I do say the horse is a fun ride. A man could talk all day about could haves and should haves but Power Rancher stands out in his correctness in conformation and the muscling that he shows. The greatest part is that he passes it on to his colts along with the gentleness and the fact that the colts are user friendly. We have finally got some colts old enough to go to the arena and other areas of competition and we look forward to the results with much anticipation. Broken Diamond Horse Program

The Broken Diamond horse program stemmed from the Jensen Ranch program which started in 1963 with the purchase of an aged mare named Sally Rey #11546. She was by El Rey Ro by Sikes by Peter McCue, about as foundation as you can get, and she was bred to a horse named Leos Limited. The resulting foal was a horse colt but not the kind that you keep for a breeder but went on to be an excellent head horse. We hauled two boys to the National High School Rodeo Finals for two years in a row and even won a buckle for a girl in the cutting. This gelding really typified the kind of horse we wished to raise, not the specialist, but usable, versatile horses that would fit the ranch, arena or show.

We built our program on the idea that the mare base was the most important part of a breeding program and as we built on this idea, mares were purchased that we could ride and prove before putting them in the breeding program. After Sally Rey, the next mare we purchased was a Browns Firefly daughter by Poco Tom and we called her Fancy, next a Pat Star Jr daughter out of Carvers Scat by the great horse Sitting Bull by King 234, then Miss Ark by Nevada King by Lucky Blanton and she was bred to a Three Bars son, Bobs Folly and the resulting foal was a filly we named Ark Angel. With breeding like this you could bet there was some speed there and she became a very good barrel horse, better than average head horse and a heal horse with AQHA points. The mare we called Fancy was a pretty fair calf horse, a lot better than the pilot but we could make the local hustle once in a while and she placed in a few barrel races.

After acquiring these young mares and proving that they had the abilities we were looking for, we started looking for a suitable stud with similar abilities and we chose a horse named Beaver Creek by King 234 and out of the mare FL Pee Wee by Peter McCue Jr. At the same time, Haythorns bought My Beaver and brought him to Nebraska. My Beaver was an AQHA Champion and a horse that was very correct in his conformation and we used him as much as we could on our little band of mares, since Haythorns are just right down the road. The resulting colts were pretty much what we were after; looks, conformation, good minds and dispositions with the abilities to perform about anywhere that we put them. This program came to an abrupt halt as My Beaver got struck by lightning and we were back in the hunt for a stud that would fit our program.

Going back to the Haythorn breeding program again, they had purchased Happy Hancock and we were very impressed by his offspring and in the spring of 1977 we purchased Happys Cardinal as a four year old. “Cardinals” mother was a My Beaver Eddie cross mare so we still got back to the good things about My Beaver that impressed us earlier.

“Cardinal” really became the foundation of our breeding program. He was a 1973 foal and we had to put him down in 2006 and that was a bitter pill to swallow. He sired his first colt crop for us in 1977 and he sired his last two colts the spring of 2006, that is 29 colt crops and that is quite a run!

“Cardinal” was just kinda broke when we got him, not much stop and very little turn, so when we pulled him out of the mares after the first season, his education began, and one of the first things to show up was the cow. Y ou couldn’t turn him but he would pin his ears back and turn with a cow. It took some time but the turn, stop and a lot more developed. After I had calved on him all spring he could hold a pretty tough cow and that just tickled me to death and I got him in the cutting pen every chance I got. We added more mares to our program in the next few years, a line bred Joe Reed mare named Dry Creek Windy and a War Chant Daughter named Chant La De, to name a couple.

In 1979 tough times came to our house and my wife Beverly, that had been a partner in this horse affair, died of cancer and that really put our whole program on skids. JC, our oldest son was a senior that year and qualified for the National High School Rodeo Finals in the cutting on a little mare that had been loaned to him. This mare was good on her day but her day might only be once a week. We figured that we had an honest 70 to 80 days in the cutting pen on “Cardinal” and we had only 30 days before the finals to fine tune but JC said he would just as soon take his chances on “Cardinal”. We missed the short go by 5 points and were very satisfied with the decision to ride our own horse. Another high spot in this horse affair was a “Cardinal” daughter out of Dry Creek Windy called Happy Foxy Lady winning the 1983 CHAN Futurity and went on to have a lifetime earning of $25,000 and wound up as a broodmare in the Babcock program and was mated to Docs Oak twice and Smart Chickalena three times.

I tripped steers for twenty years or more and I rode my own horses and never felt that I had to take my hat off to anybody. My first tripper was a MyB eaver son out of the Fancy mare that I called Sunny, another was a “Cardinal” Chant La De colt that I called Duce and we made the short go in Cheyenne when he was just six. For a tripping horse that is pretty darn good. In the time that I was going down the road I roped on five horses, beside the two mentioned there was Jose, Cougar and Dustry. As I said all of these horses came out of this program and you could win money on all of them. As I write, JC is setting 5th in the first oundr at Cheyenne on a horse that I raised.

As the “Cardinal” fillies developed we purchased a Waggoner 101 son called Masies Blue, out of a double bred Three Bars mare. This horse was grey and bred the color strong. Never thought much of grey horses but Masies Blue’s colts were good ones. Our current stud is a horse called Power Rancher by Gay Badge by Gay Bar King and out of a Command Punch by Fritz Command by King Fritz. “PR” is a good athlete and his colts are also. They have good dispositions and are very trainable and this is mostly what we offer in this sale.

We took Tim Vivion as a partner a few years ago and changed the name of our horse program to Broken Diamond. Tim has really been as asset to the program. He makes a good horse and I know that we would not be able to present this consignment of horses and the training that is exhibited if it were not for him. I am closing my breeding program down but we still have a few good ones at home and you will probably get a chance to see some of them in the future. Quick and handy. When you start talking about a horse with those terms you are talking about one that you can get your work done on. Handy got his right front foot cut when he was 3 and he sorta fell Lot through the cracks. Didn’t get the attention that he should have gotten but by sale time he will have 45 plus rides and started in the right direction. This colt is a little watchy but rides off nice. The lack of 65 attention early in his life probably accounts for the watchy.

We intended to put JJ in broodmare band so we just put about 30 rides on her. She is gentle to handle and rides off good. By sale time we hope to have over 40 rides on her and get a little better prepared for the next owner. I am sure that JJ will follow the Cardinal pattern and ride or produce very well.
