Entrevista a Scott Hampton

Dear Mr. Scott Hampton, I hope this message finds you well.

I am writing you on the date you suggested to me. I would ask you the questions I asked you a few months ago. I really appreciate your attention and any possible response you can provide me will be great help. Within some of the questions you will find numbers that correspond to the images attached in this email (“image N°1”, for example). The questions are:

Q. - Where did you study art art?

A. - I did not. My brother Bo went to SVA and I learned a great deal from him growing up.

Q. - I can see that in occasions your brushstroke is very similar to Edward Hopper’s brushstroke. What kind of artists (comic artists, painters, filmmakers, photographers, writers of literature, etc.) have influenced your work?

A. - Frank Frazetta, Jeff Jones, Edmund Dulac, Robert Fawcett, the list goes on and on and includes Hopper, Homer, Wyeth, etc.

Q. - Are whodunit and noir film referents in your work?

A. - Probably. I make allusions sometimes and pay homage.

Q. - Batman: Night Cries has some dedications. Mr. Goodwin dedicates it to: Anne, Jennifer and Seth. And you to: Letitia. Who are these people? Are your children? (image N°1)

A. - Letitia was my wife. Anne was Archie's wife, and his two children also.

Q. - The quote of bats of wildlife guide (image N°2 - 1990) is repeated at the beginning and end of the . I tried to find the magazine on the internet, but I couldn’t find it. Can you tell me something that you consider important about the magazine?

A. - I think Archie made that up.

Q. - In the introduction for Spanish edition of Batman: Night Cries (ECC - 2014), David Fernandez wrote that you used mixed techniques. I recognize a few of them (please tell me if I'm wrong) like "watercolor" (image N°3) and "dripping" (image N°4). Did you use other sources? Can you tell me what they are?

A. - Ink, watercolor, acrylic, pencil.

Q. - In relation to the previous , Fernandez says that you use photocopies (Xerox) to narrate flashbacks (image N°5, image N°6 and image N°7). Did you use photocopies of real- life images in the flashbacks?

A. - No, they are photocopies of paintings.

Q. - What impel you and Mr. Goodwin to talk about this topic (child abuse) in the comic?

A. - I had the basic idea and asked Archie to write it.

Q. - Last but not least, I know that Mr. Archie Goodwin passed away, leaving a great legacy, so how was your relationship with him? And what did Batman: Night Cries mean to him?

A. - Archie was my favorite comics writer and he was an incredibly great editor. I couldn't have asked for a better collaborator. I'm afraid I can't answer the question of what it meant to Archie since I never asked, but I'm very proud of the book.
