There were reportedly hectic parleys before consensus within the victorious side, the PPP, could be reached on the name of the new Prime Minister. Former Prime Minster Barrister Sultan Mehmood’s candidature for the prime ministerial office was almost finalized, as is indicated in one of the reports included in the issue, that he would take oath as the next prime minister of the so called AJK. The report has been accommodated precisely to bring out the extent of uncertainty regarding the issue. Nevertheless, Majid was the final choice for the post after intense discussions took place within the PPP under Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani. Meanwhile, Sardar Yaqoob Khan of the PPP, who is also a former prime minister of the so called AJK was elected the next president by majority of votes. He will succeed Raja Zulqarnain who will complete his tenure on the 25th August, 2011. Interestingly, the Interim Constitution of AJK 1974 Act requires that the next president be elected a month in advance before the term of the current incumbent expires. Even though Cross LoC trade resumed after months of breakdown, it is yet to gain momentum. For the first time, there was a dialogue between the Parliaments of Afghanistan and Pakistan devoted to security and military matters with the two counterpart Committees of both Upper Houses engaged in candid discussions. During both visits, Afghanistan and Azerbaijan, with six political parties represented, both from the government and the opposition, there was a tremendous degree of cohesion and camaraderie among the Parliamentarians as they promoted the perspective of Pakistan above any partisanship.

I am pleased to present the first Annual Tax Directory of honorable parliamentarians for the tax year 2013, prepared by the Federal Board of Revenue. This precedent has set high standards of transparency. The tax directory provides tax details of all members of Senate of Pakistan and the National Assembly of Pakistan and the Provincial Assemblies. Chairman, Members, Chief Commissioners and Officers of FBR extended their maximum assistance to parliamentarians in order to facilitate them in getting their NTNs and in filing of Income Tax Returns for the tax year ended on 30 June 2013. To date all the parliamentarians have obtained their NTNs and out of total 1172 parliamentarians,1127 have filed their Income Tax Returns for the tax year ended on 30 June 2013 and for the remaining parliamentarians, due process is being undertaken.     COMPILATION of MEDIA COVERAGE: UN REPORT ON BENAZIR BHUTTO’S ASSASINATION SANA ALI 'Pak unlikely to act on BB report' NEW YORK (Bloomberg) – Pakistan is unlikely to take steps to address the security and judicial failures detailed in a report on the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, the nation’s Ambassador to the United Nations said. ‚I have witnessed history in my country for the last 60 years and nothing is ever taken to conclusion,‛ Ambassador Abdullah Hussain Haroon said in an interview on Friday. ‚We have had great trauma in Pakistan that did not lead to reform.‛ Bhutto’s 2007 assassination might have been prevented had the government and security forces taken adequate steps after death threats were made against her, the UN- backed report said. The subsequent investigation ‚lacked direction, was ineffective and suffered from a lack of commitment to identify and bring all of the perpetrators to justice,‛ the report said. Haroon, 59, said the 65-page report, commissioned by UN Secretary General Ban Ki- moon and released on Thursday, was a ‚very clean factual picture‛ that was ‚well- conceived, well- written and well-intentioned‛ and contained no major errors. The report called for ‚police reform measures‛ to ‚operate in a structure of accountability for protecting the rights of the individual.‛ It said Pakistan needs ‚strong and effective intelligence services‛ and that the ‚democratic rule of law in Pakistan could be greatly strengthened.‛ PAST VIOLENCE Past violence in Pakistan, including the ‚loss of East Pakistan,‛ the 1979 execution of Benazir Bhutto’s father, prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, and military ruler General Muhammad Ziaul Haq’s death in a plane crash in 1988 all failed to produce better leadership, Haroon said.
