P.007 Papers of Alexander OLIVER (1832-1904) MA (Oxford), Fellow of Senate, and family Date Range: 1826-1934 QunntihJ (sh. m.): 3 Administrative Hist01-y Alexander Oliver was born in Sydney on 30 September 1832, son of Andrew Oliver of Manchester, and his wife Mary Ann [Kenyon]. Andrew Oliver died a few years after Alexander's birth and his mother remarried Mr T. W. Smart, Treasurer and Minister for Public Works under Sir Charles Cowper. Oliver was educated at various schools in Sydney: Mr Cape's School, Mr Taylor's School (later Fort Street Boys), and Mr Carey's School. During this period Oliver lost his left arm in a shooting accident at Bondi. In 1852 Oliver matriculated to the University of Sydney and was among the first group of students admitted to the University. However, his family moved to England in 1854 and Oliver went with them, transferring his studies to Oxford University. He graduated with an M.A. with honours in 1861, and in 1862 was called to the Bar, practising as a barrister in England until 1864, when he returned to Sydney. During his period in England Alexander married his first wife Adelaide Beresford Gwyn, however, she died shortly after the Olivers arrived back in Sydney. On 12 December 1864 Oliver was appointed Examiner to the Council of Education, and on 1 August of the following year he became Parliamentary Draftsman with W. H. Wilkinson, a position he held until 1892. From this time on Oliver was very active in public life, holding a wide variety of positions: Secretary to the Law Reform Commission, 1 July 1870; Registrar of Friendly Societies, 20 January 1874; Examiner of Titles under the Real Property Act, 13 July 1874; Fellow of the University of Sydney Senate 1879-1904; Member of the Fisheries Commission, 1881; Registrar of Trade Unions, 16 December 1881; President of the Intoxicating Drink Enquiry Commission, 1886; Member of the State House Designs Board, 1887; Trustee of the Free Public Library, 1887; Member of the Civil Service Board, 1888. -

[email protected] Abstract: The 80 paintings of Australian flora, fauna and landscapes by English artist Marianne North (1830-1890), completed during her travels in 1880–1881, provide a record of the Australian environment rarely presented by artists at that time. In the words of her mentor Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, director of Kew Gardens, North’s objective was to capture landscapes that were ‘doomed shortly to disappear before the axe and the forest fires, the plough and the flock, or the ever advancing settler or colonist’. In addition to her paintings, North wrote books recollecting her travels, in which she presented her observations and explained the relevance of her paintings, within the principles of a ‘Darwinian vision,’ and inevitable and rapid environmental change. By examining her paintings and writings together, North’s works provide a documented narrative of the state of the Australian environment in the late nineteenth- century, filtered through the themes of personal botanical discovery, colonial expansion and British imperialism. Australian Plants Society NORTH SHORE GROUP Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden Bush foods and fibres • Plant-based bush foods, medicines and poisons can come from nectar, flowers, fruit, leaves, bark, stems, sap and roots. • Plants provide fibres and materials for making many items including clothes, cords, musical instruments, shelters, tools, toys and weapons. • A fruit is the seed-bearing structure of a plant. • Do not eat fruits that you do not know to be safe to eat. Allergic reactions or other adverse reactions could occur. • We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of this land and pay our respects to the Elders both past, present and future for they hold the memories, traditions, culture and hope of their people. Plants as food: many native plants must be processed before they are safe to eat. Flowers, nectar, pollen, Sugars, vitamins, honey, lerps (psyllid tents) minerals, starches, manna (e.g. Ribbon Gum proteins & other nutrients Eucalyptus viminalis exudate), gum (e.g. Acacia lerp manna decurrens) Fruit & seeds Staple foods Carbohydrates (sugars, starches, fibre), proteins, fats, vitamins Leaves, stalks, roots, apical Staple foods Carbohydrates, protein, buds minerals Plants such as daisies, lilies, orchids and vines Tubers, rhyzomes were a source of starchy tubers known as Carbohydrate, fibre, yams. The yam daisy Microseris lanceolata protein, vitamins, (Asteraceae) was widespread in inland NSW minerals and other states. The native yam Dioscorea transversa grows north from Stanwell Tops into Qld and Northern Territory and can be eaten raw or roasted as can those of Trachymene incisa. 1 Plant Description of food Other notes Acacia Wattle seed is a rich source of iron, Saponins and tannins and other essential elements. -

The Art of Consensus: Edmund Barton and the 1897 Federal Convention The Art of Consensus: Edmund Barton and the 1897 Federal Convention* Geoffrey Bolton dmund Barton first entered my life at the Port Hotel, Derby on the evening of Saturday, E13 September 1952. As a very young postgraduate I was spending three months in the Kimberley district of Western Australia researching the history of the pastoral industry. Being at a loose end that evening I went to the bar to see if I could find some old-timer with an interesting store of yarns. I soon found my old-timer. He was a leathery, weather-beaten station cook, seventy-three years of age; Russel Ward would have been proud of him. I sipped my beer, and he drained his creme-de-menthe from five-ounce glasses, and presently he said: ‘Do you know what was the greatest moment of my life?’ ‘No’, I said, ‘but I’d like to hear’; I expected to hear some epic of droving, or possibly an anecdote of Gallipoli or the Somme. But he answered: ‘When I was eighteen years old I was kitchen-boy at Petty’s Hotel in Sydney when the federal convention was on. And every evening Edmund Barton would bring some of the delegates around to have dinner and talk about things. I seen them all: Deakin, Reid, Forrest, I seen them all. But the prince of them all was Edmund Barton.’ It struck me then as remarkable that such an archetypal bushie, should be so admiring of an essentially urban, middle-class lawyer such as Barton. -

A REVISION OF THE GENUS TEMPLETONIA R.Br. (PAPILIONACEAE) by J. H. Ross* ABSTRACT The endemic Australian genus Templetonia is revised. Eleven species are recognized and the uncertainty concerning the application of the name T. sulcata (Meissn.) Benth. is discussed. This discussion includes the selection ol a lectotype for Bossiaea rossii F. Muell., a possible synonym. Descriptions, a key to the identification of species, illustrations, and distribution maps are provided, together with notes on ecology and relationships. Two previous papers describing T. incana (.Muelleria 4: 247-249 (1980)) and T. negketa (loc. cit. 390-393 (1981)) should be used in conjunction with the present revision. INTRODUCTION Templetonia, a small genus of 1 1 species described by R. Brown in Ait. f Hort. , Kew. ed. 2, 4: 269 (1812), was named in honour of the Irish botanist John Templeton (1776-1825) ot Orange Grove, Belfast. -

Recently network theory has been applied to ecological networks, including interactions between plants that live in the canopy of other trees (e.g. mistletoes or vines). In this thesis, I explore plant-plant interactions in greater detail and I test for the first time, a predictive approach that maps unique biological traits across species interactions. In chapter two I used a novel predictive approach to investigate the topology of a mistletoe-host network and evaluate leaf trait similari ties between Lauranthaceaous mistletoes and host trees. Results showed support for negative co-occurrence patterns, web specialisation and strong links between species pairs. However, the deterministic model showed that the observed network topology could not predict network interactions when they were considered to be unique associations in the community. -
A Revision of Storenosoma Hogg and Description of a New Genus, Oztira (Araneae: Amaurobiidae)

The genus Storenosoma Hogg, 1900 is revised and now contains thirteen species, S. hoggi (Roewer), S. altum Davies, S. supernum Davies, S. terraneum Davies, S. bifidum n.sp., S. bondi n.sp., S. forsteri n.sp., S. grayi n.sp., S. grossum n.sp., S. picadilly n.sp., S. smithae n.sp., S. tasmaniensis n.sp., and S. victoria n.sp. A new genus, Oztira, is described to contain Australian species previously ascribed to the New Zealand genus Otira Forster & Wilton. Oztira contains four species, Oz. affinis (Hickman) n.comb., Oz. aquilonaria (Davies) n.comb., Oz. summa (Davies) n.comb., and Oz. kroombit n.sp. (Fig. 1a–c) from north eastern New South Wales and South Eastern contain ground dwelling ecribellate amaurobiid spiders Queensland. Examination of large numbers of specimens of small to moderate size which appear to be free living in museum collections has revealed a further nine species terrestrial hunters.
