here were two things that were a little different about our Athletic Sports TDay this year. Firstly, Athletic Sports preceeded Swimming Sports, something that the eventual champion, Argyle House, was very happy about as it allowed them to get off to a flying start in this year’s House Competition, and secondly, cloud cover meant that temperatures were kept at a relatively bearable level. Two records were broken, by Liam Davis (Wilson) who set a new fastest time in the Intermediate 2000m Steeplechase of 6’27.38 minutes, and by Jesse Humberstone Kara (Argyle) who broke the Junior Discus record with a throw of 45.71 metres. It’s early days in the 2021 House Competition, but Argyle has established a handy gap with a Major Event win, over second-placed Taylor, and Baigent, Tait and Wilson all very close behind tied for third. Steel is currently languishing in sixth place, but it would be a very foolish commentator who wrote them off this early in the year. Congratulations to all of our age-group champions and to all of our athletes who competed with such enthusiam. A special thank you to Mr Todd Miller and the HPW Faculty on their efforts to organise another superb day out at Porritt Stadium. Photography by Ms Jamieson Hudson, Ben Trotter and Sean Witters.

2 > High Achiever | April 2021 www.hbhs.school.nz Swimming Sports Day

e may have moved to Alert Level 2 at the beginning of the first week Win March, but thankfully the 2021 Swimming Sports was still able to go ahead, albeit as a competitive-swimmers- only event with no spectators. With the emphasis on serious swimming and with March temperatures mercifully dropping, records aplenty were broken, with five new benchmarks set. Dominic Fawkner (Taylor) set two new records, in the Senior 100m Freestyle with a time of 52.7 seconds, and in the Senior 200m, a time of 1’57 minutes. His fellow Taylor House swimmer Ciaran Watson set a new record in the Open 100m Butterfly, with a time of 59.81 seconds, and Carlos Hardie (Wilson) set a record in the Open 100m Medley with a time of 1’01.47 minutes. Junior Champion Miles Julian (Steel) was our final record-breaker, in the Junior 100m Breastroke, swimming a time of 1’16.13 minutes. Wilson House cemented their reputation as a swimming powerhouse, once again taking out the House Competition, with Steel House coming back from disaster in the Athletic Sports to finish second. It’s all very tight at the moment, with only a few points separating all six Houses after two events. Congratulations to all of our swimmers, and thanks to Mr Quigley and Mr Teokotai-White on their efforts in organising such a successful event in these ever-trying circumstances. Options included everything from cooking meals, budgeting, physical and mental health care, crafting distinctive C.V.’s through to learning how to stay safe on nights out on the town. The response to the day was resoundingly positive, and our Year 13 students were incredibly appreciative of the workshops Above: Gabe Robinson (left) and Joseph Ollington (right) sample their easy and healthy and the life skills being taught.
