The Do Re Mi Gospel Music Academy is pleased to present “LET US SING!” This EXCITING WEEKEND will feature workshops and Con- vention singing at The Do Re Mi Retreat, 275 Cedar Bluff Road in Hartsville, Tennessee, on March 23 and 24, 2012. We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Stephen Shearon, Charles Towler, Tracey Phillips, Sen. Jimmy Jeffress, Tom Powell, Lisa Powell, and Bob Bradley for a weekend of Shape Note Convention Music. These highly regarded presenters will cover topics of shape note legacy, family singing, music reading, and the importance of shape note music in the twenty-first century. Informative, interactive group sessions and pri- vate lessons will highlight the two-day event. Children 12 and under will also have the opportunity to learn about music under Lisa Powell. Selected church pianists will gain new skills through private and group lessons with Tracey Phillips. Tom Powell will lead Con- vention singing on Friday night and Saturday morning. At the close of the weekend, all are invited to attend The Macon County Sing- ing Convention, Saturday, March 24, at 2:00 p.m., at Long Fork Missionary Baptist Church in Lafayette, Tennessee.

A Weekend Of Shape Note Convention Music

Bob Bradley began attending gospel music singing schools at age seven. He was awarded a B. A. Degree in Mu- sic from East Tennessee State University and a Masters Degree in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from Southern Mississippi University. Bob is affiliated with the National Association for Teachers of Singing, The American Cho- ral Directors Association and The National Association for Music Education. He is an accomplished soloist, serves on the faculty of the Do Re Mi Gospel Music Academy, and is Director of the Leoma School of Gospel Music.

Senator Jimmy Jeffress grew up in a gospel singing family near Crossett, Arkansas, graduating from the Uni- versity of Arkansas at Monticello in 1971. He received a Masters Degree in Music Education from the University of Louisiana at Monroe. He taught high school and served as a choral director for 28 years. An Arkansas State Senator and former State Representative, Jimmy is a song writer and taught his first music school with his aunt, Mrs. Nolin Jeffress. He continues to teach in churches and singing venues every summer. He has been a member of the faculty of the Jeffress/Phillips School of Music, co-founded by his father, for the past 40 years.

Tracey Phillips is a well known pianist, teacher and clinician. She earned her degree in Theory/Composition at Middle Tennessee State University. Tracey has been featured on the Gaither Homecoming videos, recorded and arranged for The Speers, The Perrys, and & Signature Sound. She has been nominated for Dove Awards for her work on Daywind’s instrumental series and recorded with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra in Prague, Czech Republic. Tracey composed original music for and performed in the movie “Billy, The Early Years,” a full length feature film recounting the early years of . Tracey teaches at Stamps-Baxter School of Music

Lisa Powell holds a Masters Degree in Music Education from the University of North Alabama. She specializes in children’s music. She will coordinate fun and educational classes for ages 12 and under for the weekend. Lisa started teaching music schools in the summer of 2009. She enjoys spending time with her family and enjoys teach- ing children about music.

Tom Powell is from Troy, Alabama. He is a retired educator with over 30 years of classroom experience. He spent several years in administration during his teaching career. For the last 30 years he has been director of shape note singing schools in Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia. Tom spent 38 years in the Tennessee National Guard as Enlisted Conductor for the 129th Army Band. He currently resides in Alabama, teaching Junior ROTC at a local high school. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Music Education and a Masters Degree in Administration Supervi- sion. Tom is the grandson of “Dad” Speer.

Dr. Stephen Shearon is professor of musicology and coordinator of graduate studies in the School of Music at Middle Tennessee State University. He teaches courses in both undergraduate and graduate studies on the history of Western classical music, the history of American music and research. He also is involved in curriculum devel- opment and development of the Philip C. Howard Music Library. He helped organize the “Farther Along” Confer- ence on Shape Note Music at MTSU. He is studying the world of convention singing and recently produced a documentary on gospel convention music featured on PBS entitled, “I’ll Keep On Singing.”

Charles Towler graduated from the University of Georgia with a B.S. Ed. Degree. He has been a music editor and Director of Music at Tennessee Music and Printing Company, an editor with the James D. Vaughan Music Company, and currently owner of Gospel Heritage Music Company, which he began in 1997. More than 300 of his gospel songs and two Christmas Musicals have been published. He has compiled and edited more than 78 conven- tion song books. He teaches local church music schools throughout the year and is an instructor at several summer music schools, including Stamps-Baxter Music School. In 2011, he was awarded the Tennessee Folklife Heritage Award, which honors a lifetime of promoting shaped-note gospel music.
