Serving Bay Area youth and their families for MORE THAN 40 years Serving Bay A r e a y o u t h a n d t h e i r

Dear Friends,This has been one of the most exciting and productive years ever for Huckleberry Youth Programs. In its 43rd year of operation, the organization continues to provide high quality services and innovative programs for at-risk youth and their families. The following list highlights a few of our accomplishments in 2010: • Huckleberry Youth Programs was honored as the 2010 Youth Agency of the Year by the National Network for Youth in Washington, D.C. • In early January, the Huckleberry Community Assessment and Referral Center (CARC) moved into a new expanded facility at 44 Gough Street. Five days later, Mayor Gavin Newsom held a press conference at CARC announcing the creation of a truancy prevention program at 44 Gough (Truancy Assessment and Referral Center -TARC), in partnership with Huckleberry CARC. • The Department of Public Health (DPH) awarded funds to create the Huckleberry Youth Multi-Service Center - San Francisco. The Huckleberry Youth Multi-Service Center targets transitional age youth and is a collaboration among Huckleberry Youth Programs, Larkin Street Youth Services, and DPH’s Community Health Programs for Youth. • In June, the second graduation of the Huckleberry Wellness Academy - San Francisco (HWA) took place with 11 new graduates off to college, joining the 14 graduates from our 2009 inaugural class. We expanded the Huckleberry Wellness Academies in both counties with two new cohorts of 17 high school juniors in San Francisco, and 25 high school freshmen in Marin. The total number of Wellness Academy participants in both counties is now 114!!! • Huckleberry Health Education workshops reached 4,738 youth in schools and community centers in SF and Marin County! • In September, Huckleberry celebrated the GRAND OPENING of the Marin Multi-Service Center at Montecito Plaza, a new 6,000 sq. ft. space that houses health education services, Teen Tuesday Clinic, a state-of-the-art classroom for our Huckleberry Wellness Academy, and expanded therapy offices. • The Huckleberry Board of Directors welcomed eight new members joining the Board in the past six months. In spite of the economy, donations from individuals, and revenue generated from special events continues to grow. In order for us to succeed in our work with youth and families, it is critical that our donor community continue to expand its support. We thank you again for all you do for Huckleberry Youth Programs, and we realize that without your help, none of this would be possible. Please feel free to call us with comments Bruce Fisher Brian G. Swift or questions, or if you would like to visit one of our programs. Executive Director Board President

Huckleberry Wellness AcademIES

The Huckleberry Wellness Academies link high-potential, underperforming students with academic, personal, and career support needed to complete high school and prepare for entry into the post-secondary programs required for health careers. The program’s goal is to provide opportunities for high-needs youth who might otherwise not attend college and to fill a growing demand for diversity among qualified healthcare professionals in the Bay Area. To date, Huckleberry has had two graduating classes from the SF program with all of the students currently enrolled in post-secondary education. Currently, 47 youth are enrolled in our San Francisco Wellness Academy and 67 are enrolled in our Marin Wellness Academy.

HUCKLEBERRY WELLNESS ACADEMY – SAN FRANCISCO

On Wednesday, June 16, eleven inspiring seniors (pictured right with Huckleberry staff) were honored at a special graduation ceremony. Each student was individually recognized for his or her accomplishments by the Director of the Huckleberry Wellness Academy - SF, Vicky Valentine, Huckleberry’s Executive Director, Bruce Fisher, and Huckleberry Board member Laurie Meschke, Ph.D., who is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Child and Adolescent Development at SFSU.

Students from the 2010 graduating class will be attending the following colleges: UC Berkeley, City College of San Francisco, St. Mary’s College, CSU East Bay, SF State University, Chabot College, Canada College, and UC Davis. The second graduating class of the Huckleberry Wellness Academy – SF

Senior Dawanna Schaedlich (pictured below) gave an extremely moving commencement address citing the Huckleberry Wellness Academy - SF as a huge part of her academic success. Dawanna is attending City College to pursue a career as a social worker.

Senior Dat Trinh (pictured far right with his family) will be attending UC Davis and aspires to become a dentist.

HUCKLEBERRY WELLNESS ACADEMY – Marin Huckleberry Wellness Academy - Marin and 10,000 Degrees (formerly Marin Education Fund) jointly launched our inaugural summer College Academy in partnership with Dominican University in 2009. The goal of The College Academy is to support rising ninth graders’ preparation for academic success and smooth transition to high school. It also serves as the introduction to the Huckleberry Wellness Academy - Marin, which prepares each student to be “college ready” by the time they graduate from high school. Over 90% of the participants are youth of color, predominantly Latino youth from Terra Linda and San Rafael High Schools, and are the first generation in their families to pursue post-secondary education.

“The program was a step, a lift, and a support to get me to where I am. Your pep talks, advice, and mediating have left a mark on my life.”

From Arrests to Artists: Huckleberry CARC Clients Win Grant to Produce Murals in San Francisco

Seventeen-year-old Raul* and sixteen-year-old George* were arrested for graffiti vandalism and brought to Huckleberry Community Assessment & Referral Center (CARC) by the San Francisco Police.

CARC Case Manager Harvey Lozada took notice of how much the young men were progressing through case management and support services and encouraged them to team up and follow their passion for art. Harvey suggested they apply for a grant that supports youth art projects. The two young men wrote a proposal and were awarded a $7,000 grant to complete four murals throughout San Francisco.

For their first project, they will design and paint a mural in memory of gun violence victims at Brothers Against Guns, a Huckleberry CARC partner organization dedicated to preventing youth violence. Both Raul and George are extremely excited about this new venture and hope to eventually turn their mural projects into a business. (Pictured at left is artwork from their mural initiative.)

Despite a difficult economy, Huckleberry Youth Programs had a very exciting fiscal year in 2009/2010. Huckleberry was recognized as the National Youth Agency of the Year, Huckleberry CARC relocated to a new facility, and the Huckleberry Youth Multi-Service Center - Marin relocated to a 6,000 sq. ft. facility in San Rafael’s Montecito Plaza.

Huckleberry Chosen as “2010 Agency Of The Year” by the National Network For Youth! The National Network for Youth (NN4Y), an organization composed of community- based youth organizations across the country, honored Huckleberry with this award in January 2010. According to Victoria Wagner, CEO and President of NN4Y (pictured with Huckleberry E.D. Bruce Fisher), “Huckleberry is eminently qualified for selection as the Agency of the Year because of the organization’s wide scope of youth programming, years of innovation in the field of youth services, and commitment to collaboration with other youth-serving organizations.”

Huckleberry CARC Relocates, Expands Services, and Enters New Partnership with the City of San Francisco

Huckleberry staff with Mayor Gavin Newsom (back center) In January 2010, Huckleberry Community Assessment and Referral Center (CARC) relocated to a larger facility at 44 Gough Street, allowing the program to expand services and provide counseling and case management to over 25% of the city’s arrested youth. In February, Mayor Gavin Newsom announced the city’s Truancy Assessment and Referral Center (TARC), a program designed to eliminate truancy in San Francisco. This new program is to be run in conjunction with Huckleberry CARC, the San Francisco Police Department, YMCA, and the Juvenile Probation Department.

In addition, a recent Department General Order (DGO) for the San Francisco Police Department explicitly states that police officers are required to contact Huckleberry CARC in all juvenile arrest cases. As a result of the revised DGO, the door has been opened for Huckleberry staff to participate in the creation and implementation of new trainings for the Police Department on juvenile procedures.
