Blondie, one of the most iconic bands of all time is back with a new album, Ghosts of Download. We sat down with the incomparable frontwoman, Debbie Harry to talk about fashion, today's pop stars, and celebrating 40 years in music…. Most artist come and go, yet your band is celebrating its 40th year in the business. What motivates you every day and Stars of 80s Dance Pop - The European Edition keeps you going? I don't know, some masochistic drive. I think it's great to be able to do music, what's bad about it? We try to make music that we like ourselves, and I think Chris Stein, co-founder and guitarist is a very, very good musician and composer. We used to have fights all the time, because he wanted to do stuff that was very political and real message kind of music, and I would fight back. I'd say I thought that music was for entertainment, and that people should have an alternative, they should chill out or have fun. But you've had fun songs, songs that actually have a huge meaning, so I guess that's your and Chris' worlds colliding. But even with the stuff that has meaning, it certainly is not overt. It's sort of mixed in, there's a little twist to it. I don't really want to hit anybody over the head. Plus if sing about something dogmatic I would want it to be about the environment. That's the only issue that I'm really sort of worried about. Stars of 80s Dance Pop - The European Edition of all of the material you have recorded over the years, what has been your favorite song to perform? Right now I really love doing "Sugar on the Stars of 80s Dance Pop - The European Edition from the new album. It's sexy, and yet it's like, "fuck you" at the same time, it's great. How would you describe the new album in three words? In three words? Well I would just say…that it's a psychological entertainment puzzle. The cover of your new album features a very famous portrait of you by Andy Warhol. Do you remember the first time you and Andy met? I think it's a composite thing, but I do remember a couple of dinners with Andy where I sort of really got to talk to him. What impressed me about him was that he was very generous to young artists, and very interested and supportive. How important is fashion in what you do as a musician? Oh, I think it's very important. I've always felt that the best bands always had a look, and for me personally as a woman, I love clothes. I've always loved clothes, I like dressing up, I like dressing down. Do you play around a lot? How big is your closet? Nothing's ever too big, not for a woman. I'm really happy with my wardrobe, actually. I really get a lot of use out of it, and I enjoy wearing it. It's funky, it's not normal. Who wants to be normal? There are some occasions when you sort of have to tone it down a little, but even then, I can't control my better instincts, and that certainly is important. I don't think you've ever blended in and that's why so many people look up to you, which leads me to my next question. When female musicians say "Debbie Harry and Blondie inspired me" what's your reaction? How dare they! What's bad about it? Unless the person is completely despicable and has no talent. But, no, to be cited as an inspiration or an influence is great. The way I look at it, my own way of staying grounded and not becoming an asshole, is to say in a certain way, Stars of 80s Dance Pop - The European Edition sort of inevitable that they're going to cite me, because I was there at a formative time in their lives. So I was one of the few five or six that actually sort of wended into their lives, into their brains. You've been an icon for so many people. Do you have a style icon, someone you looked up to or you still look up to or admire fashion-wise and music-wise? It varies. I really appreciate Gaga, in her sort of fetishistic style. And I think about, 'Wow, where is she going with that? I think we're all thinking that. But I'm sure she has something in mind. I think Tilda Swinton really is fantastic. She's so unpredictable and gorgeous, you know, Stars of 80s Dance Pop - The European Edition almost zen. What has been the proudest moment so far, for you? Not only career, I'm talking about your life. I had a great time meeting the entire cast of Monty Pythonthat was a really superb moment. How did that happen? It was at The Greek theatre, and I was there with Lauren Hutton, and we went backstage and said hello to all of them. Is there anyone you would love to collaborate with? Maybe one collaboration left that you haven't done? One million! Well, I did recently do a little song for Systema Solar a song called "Artificial"which was nice. Stars of 80s Dance Pop - The European Edition Spanish wasn't so great, but that was a nice collaboration. In the future, I think I'm pretty open about it. I really love Die Antwoord. I want to play a word association game with you. I'll name a few artists, and you give me one word that comes to mind. Andy Warhol? Steven Sprouse? ? ? Gwen Stefani…who has, on a million occasions, worshipped the ground you walk on. I have to say, I admire her too. She came out of a real rock thing, little Orange County girl. And she's still doing it, she's still dynamite! Beth Ditto? ? Ooh, I love Justin Timberlake. What a talent, what a great talent. And you know what, I read that Justin Timberlake was sort of a shy, gawky kid. Pharrell Williams? Oh, Pharrell. Jeez, I saw him at Coachella and there was a sandstorm, it was so awful, he lost his voice. It was blinding us, it was horrible. And he was singing, in the sandstorm, it was the Stars of 80s Dance Pop - The European Edition unbelievable thing. And Lorde? And not afraid to speak her mind for a kid who's 17 years old. You know, age means nothing. She's like an older person. I don't know if she's an old soul, but look at her, she just looks like there's all this life going on inside of her. United States.
