ABSTRACT the Women of Supernatural: More Than
ABSTRACT The Women of Supernatural: More than Stereotypes Miranda B. Leddy, M.A. Mentor: Mia Moody-Ramirez, Ph.D. This critical discourse analysis of the American horror television show, Supernatural, uses a gender perspective to assess the stereotypes and female characters in the popular series. As part of this study 34 episodes of Supernatural and 19 female characters were analyzed. Findings indicate that while the target audience for Supernatural is women, the show tends to portray them in traditional, feminine, and horror genre stereotypes. The purpose of this thesis is twofold: 1) to provide a description of the types of female characters prevalent in the early seasons of Supernatural including mother-figures, victims, and monsters, and 2) to describe the changes that take place in the later seasons when the female characters no longer fit into feminine or horror stereotypes. Findings indicate that female characters of Supernatural have evolved throughout the seasons of the show and are more than just background characters in need of rescue. These findings are important because they illustrate that representations of women in television are not always based on stereotypes, and that the horror genre is evolving and beginning to depict strong female characters that are brave, intellectual leaders instead of victims being rescued by men. The study consisted of an analysis of programs appearing between 8 and 11 o'clock in the morning on September 15, 1990, and June 9, 1992, focusing on the ethnicity, gender, and age of characters, the positive or negative portrayal of characters, and the characters' positions of authority. The study found that the Saturday morning cartoons reviewed contained few older characters, and that the majority of these were depicted as either evil or incompetent. Of the characters whose ethnicity could be determined, 32 percent belonged to ethnic minorities, though fully 60 percent of these minority characters were in one show ("Kid 'N Play"). Only 17.8 percent of the characters in 1990 and 23.8 percent in 1992 were female. Cartoon settings, plot types, values, morality, and inherent consumerism are also analy..ed and discussed. Overall, the paper concludes that Saturday morning children's programming teaches children that white men are the most important and powerful people in society; that women are underrepresented everywhere; that the world is a scary place; and, that they should belong and be loyal to a group and never act on their own. -

So what does that mean? Our contracts: The Animation Guild has fi ve major contracts (collective bargaining agreements, or CBAs) with employers—the major studios who fund and produce the projects we work on—and many individual agreements with smaller studios and producers, that are generally based on our Master Agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). These CBAs govern the minimum wages, hours, working con- ditions and benefi ts for our members who are employed at signatory studios. Who we bargain with: The Guild and its parent union, the Internation- al Alliance of Theatrical and Stage Employees (IATSE), negotiate with Walt Disney Animation Studios (TSL), Sony Pictures Animation (SPA), Nickel- odeon and Warner Animation Group (WAG Pictures, Inc.). THE REAL GHOSTBUSTERS "Poultrygeist!" by Duane Capizzi and Steven Roberts Last revised May 12, 1988 ACT ONE ------- FADE IN: EXT. -- A FARMHOUSE OUTSIDE NEW YORK CITY -- NIGHT On the farmhouse roof a CHICKEN-SHAPED WEATHERVANE stands silhouetted against a FULL, BLOOD-RED MOON. The wind HOWLS and the vane swivels with an EERIE SQUEAK. Then a weird ANIMAL CRY is heard--a cross between a chicken CROWING and a wolf HOWLING. WERECHICKEN (VO) (A CROWING HOWL) CAMERA PANS DOWN TO: CHICKEN PEN A fenced-in dirt area with numerous CHICKENS milling around, CLUCKING as they peck at the ground. WERECHICKEN (VO) (ANOTHER HOWL, nearer now) The chickens' heads jerk up toward the sound. WERECHICKEN'S POV -- MOVING A RED-tinted, shaky, MOVING CAMERA TRUCK-IN on the chickens. (These shots are in the style of the POV SHOTS in WOLFEN.) Magnified GURGLING and HEAVY BREATHING of Werechicken is heard. WERECHICKEN (VO) (GURGLING, HEAVY BREATHING) The terrified chickens stare INTO CAMERA as the Werechicken moves closer, his shadow falling over them. They flap into their coop, SQUAWKING wildly. INT. -- FARMHOUSE LIVING ROOM -- NIGHT MAUDE and ZEKE sit on the sagging couch watching a werewolf movie on TV while munching popcorn from a huge bowl. They're distracted by CHICKENS SQUAWKING. ZEKE Sump'n's stirrin' up the chickens, Maude. MAUDE Jes' set easy, Zeke. (she rises; heads for door) I'll take a look-see. Zeke continues staring at TV. EXT. FARMHOUSE -- NIGHT -- WERECHICKEN'S POV Through the Werechicken's red eyes, we see a distant image of Maude with a flashlight, approaching the fenced-in chicken pen and opening the gate. -
