Profile of Mrs.Gauri Maulekhi

Ms. Gauri Maulekhi is the Trustee of - India’s largest organization. She is also the Member Secretary of People For Animals Uttarakhand, which is the is the legal and policy wing of its parent organization, People For Animals. Since 1994, she has contributed to animal welfare in various capacities - policy reform, capacity building law enforcement authorities, public awareness as well as sheltering.

Ms. Maulekhi serves as a resource person and a trainer for the State Police for more than 8 states and has held workshops on animal welfare at the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal and at the State Judicial Academies of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Through her efforts of seeking judicial intervention of Courts, Prevention of (Regulation of Markets) Rules, 2017, The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Dog Breeding & Marketing) Rules, 2017 and The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Pet Shop) Rules, 2018 were notified by the Government of India.

Ms. Maulekhi has been nominated by several State Governments to be a Member of Slaughter-House Monitoring Committees, Animal Birth Control Implementation and Monitoring Committees, etc which have been constituted in compliance of orders passed by the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India. She has worked extensively across various States to spread awareness about animal welfare and ethical treatment of animals. She is also a member of the Uttarakhand State Animal Welfare Board.

Ms. Maulekhi was awarded the prestigious 2018 by the President of India, for her contribution to the field of animal welfare advocacy. In 2018, she was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in the field of animal welfare advocacy by Lucknow University. In 2018, she received the Outstanding Animal protection Award from the Humane Society International at Kansas City, USA. She is also a recipient of the Lush Prize 2017 in London for her contribution towards reducing unnecessary use of animals in laboratories. She has worked with various ministries of the Government of India and several State Governments to formulate and implement policies, such as humane transportation of animals, humane slaughter practices, effective population management and the protection of .
