The Principal Indian Towns of Western Pennsylvania C. Hale Sipe One cannot travel far in Western Pennsylvania with- out passing the sites of Indian towns, Delaware, Shawnee and Seneca mostly, or being reminded of the Pennsylvania Indians by the beautiful names they gave to the mountains, streams and valleys where they roamed. In a future paper the writer will set forth the meaning of the names which the Indians gave to the mountains, valleys and streams of Western Pennsylvania; but the present paper is con- fined to a brief description of the principal Indian towns in the western part of the state. The writer has arranged these Indian towns in alphabetical order, as follows: Allaquippa's Town* This town, named for the Seneca, Queen Allaquippa, stood at the mouth of Chartier's Creek, where McKees Rocks now stands. In the Pennsylvania, Colonial Records, this stream is sometimes called "Allaquippa's River". The name "Allaquippa" means, as nearly as can be determined, "a hat", being likely a corruption of "alloquepi". This In- dian "Queen", who was visited by such noted characters as Conrad Weiser, Celoron and George Washington, had var- ious residences in the vicinity of the "Forks of the Ohio". In fact, there is good reason for thinking that at one time she lived right at the "Forks". When Washington met her while returning from his mission to the French, she was living where McKeesport now stands, having moved up from the Ohio to get farther away from the French. After Washington's surrender at Fort Necessity, July 4th, 1754, she and the other Indian inhabitants of the Ohio Val- ley friendly to the English, were taken to Aughwick, now Shirleysburg, where they were fed by the Colonial Author- ities of Pennsylvania. -

The Wesleyan Enlightenment: Closing the gap between heart religion and reason in Eighteenth Century England by Timothy Wayne Holgerson B.M.E., Oral Roberts University, 1984 M.M.E., Wichita State University, 1986 M.A., Asbury Theological Seminary, 1999 M.A., Kansas State University, 2011 AN ABSTRACT OF A DISSERTATION submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of History College of Arts and Sciences KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2017 Abstract John Wesley (1703-1791) was an Anglican priest who became the leader of Wesleyan Methodism, a renewal movement within the Church of England that began in the late 1730s. Although Wesley was not isolated from his enlightened age, historians of the Enlightenment and theologians of John Wesley have only recently begun to consider Wesley in the historical context of the Enlightenment. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex relationship between a man, John Wesley, and an intellectual movement, the Enlightenment. As a comparative history, this study will analyze the juxtaposition of two historiographies, Wesley studies and Enlightenment studies. Surprisingly, Wesley scholars did not study John Wesley as an important theologian until the mid-1960s. Moreover, because social historians in the 1970s began to explore the unique ways people experienced the Enlightenment in different local, regional and national contexts, the plausibility of an English Enlightenment emerged for the first time in the early 1980s. As a result, in the late 1980s, scholars began to integrate the study of John Wesley and the Enlightenment. In other words, historians and theologians began to consider Wesley as a serious thinker in the context of an English Enlightenment that was not hostile to Christianity. -

The name Wachau is part of Count Zinzendorf’s noble title and refers to an area in Austria where the Zinzendorfs’ ancestral estate was located. The Moravians founded several congregations in Wachovia: Bethabara, Bethania, Salem (now Winston‐Salem) as the central town, Friedberg, and Friedland. During the first decades of its existence the Elders Conference in Bethlehem (beginning 1762 the Oeconomatskonferenz) oversaw the activities in Wachovia and the leaders in Wachovia reported to Bethlehem. Therefore, many letters, reports, diaries, memoirs, and financial statements were sent to Bethlehem during the early decades. 2.3 Archival History Records relating to the congregations in Wachovia were made into a separate record group and arranged by Kenneth Hamilton. -

Press Kit The feature film Wesley is based closely on the actual events of Wesley's life, a story that already reads much like a Hollywood screenplay. Wesley is a compelling and controversial main character that women found intensely attractive; there is adventure on the high seas, a terrible storm and near-shipwreck. In the newly settled Savannah, Georgia, there is an incredibly romantic but star-crossed love affair that ends tragically. Wesley is crushed, and on his return to England we experience his spiritual struggle and finally renewal. We are then swept away with his preaching in the fields and his efforts to help the lowest classes of society. His ministry is controversial, there is mob violence, confrontation, and tension followed by his victorious preaching to thousands in his home town. In short, this true story has everything that Hollywood loves to put into movies! The movie has the seafaring adventure of Master & Commander , the bittersweet romance of Sense and Sensibility, but at the same time tells a compelling story of conversion, faith, dynamic social reform and ministry. Synopsis The year is 1732. John Wesley is an irritatingly religious, self-righteous instructor at Oxford who secretly struggles with his lack of true inner peace. He is offered the chance to go to the new colony of Georgia, where he hopes to earn his way to heaven by preaching to the Indians. During the voyage over, the ship encounters a violent storm; John and his brother Charles, terrified of dying, are astonished to see the group of Moravian missionaries on board calmly conducting their evening service as if the storm didn't exist. -

I have said for years that as United Methodists we have the most relevant theology for the 21st century in the areas of evangelism and discipleship. It is a theology worth knowing. o The concepts of grace, justification by faith, sanctification are all concepts of acceptance tempered with discipline and holy living. o It’s Scriptural: you preach and teach it. o It’s Social: you use it to promote outreach, mission, and social justice. o It’s Disciplined: you use it to guide people in counseling & Spiritual growth. 1 o It’s a Means of Revival: It was developed as a response to the apathy and doldrums of the church. o It’s Ecumenical: It pulls from Calvinism, Anglicanism, and the Moravians. The story of John Wesley in 18th century England is a story of a young boy who is greatly influenced by his mother and nurtured with a life-long call to ministry. The discipline of his upbringing led to an amazing sense of focus when he enrolled in Oxford in 1726. The development of the Holy Club began a courageous intersection between what he believed and how he practiced that belief. His failed venture as a missionary in Georgia revealed that just disciplining yourself with mechanical beliefs and intentional actions was not enough. The Moravians on the boat opened a door to what it meant to be saved by faith 2 and faith alone. Their influence continued to shape him as people like Peter Boehler constantly visited him and teased him with what it meant to be saved. -

Some ethnologists believe the Shawnee descended from the Fort Ancient people. The Shawnees were wanderers, who lived in many places in the south. They became associated closely with the Delaware in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Able fighters, the Shawnees stubbornly resisted white pressures until the Treaty of Greene Ville in 1795. At the time of the arrival of the European explorers on the shores of the North American continent, the American Indians were living in a network of highly developed cultures. Each group lived in similar housing, wore similar clothing, ate similar food, and enjoyed similar tribal life. In the geographical northeastern part of North America, the principal American Indian tribes were: Abittibi, Abenaki, Algonquin, Beothuk, Cayuga, Chippewa, Delaware, Eastern Cree, Erie, Forest Potawatomi, Huron, Iroquois, Illinois, Kickapoo, Mohicans, Maliseet, Massachusetts, Menominee, Miami, Micmac, Mississauga, Mohawk, Montagnais, Munsee, Muskekowug, Nanticoke, Narragansett, Naskapi, Neutral, Nipissing, Ojibwa, Oneida, Onondaga, Ottawa, Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, Peoria, Pequot, Piankashaw, Prairie Potawatomi, Sauk-Fox, Seneca, Susquehanna, Swamp-Cree, Tuscarora, Winnebago, and Wyandot. -

Moravians in the City Offering Hope for 25 Years: Moravian Open Door 1987-2012 A history on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary by Rev. David A. Schattschneider, Ph.D. BLANK Moravians in the City Offering Hope for Twenty-five Years: Moravian Open Door Moravian Open Door (MOD) dedicated its newly renovated facilities at 347 East 18th Street in Manhattan (New York City) on November 7, 1987. Among the political leaders present was David Dinkins, the Manhattan Bor- ough President who would later serve as Mayor of New York City (1990–1993). Mario Cuomo, Governor of the State of New York (1983–1994), had sent a ci- tation commending the Moravian Church’s Eastern District for its commitment to provide “permanent housing for 42 elderly, homeless people” in the building “funded with a grant from the State Homeless Housing and Assistance Program and with contributions from member churches and individuals.”1 The citation clearly identifies the unique ‘church and state’ partnership which characterized the early stages of MOD’s activity. The citation also notes the long history of the Moravian Church in ministering to the neediest members of society: “By 1732, the Church already had begun serving New Yorkers, ministering to the needy, the unwanted and the forgotten.” 1 The framed citation may now be found hanging in the foyer of the MOD building. 1 First Moravian Church of New York City Moravian Open Door was a new program inspired by the Coffee Pot ministry of First Moravian Church in Manhattan. That congregation had its origins in the early years of the eighteenth century when European Moravians first arrived in America. -

Christian Frederick "Post and the Winning of the West HRISTIAN Frederick Post, although a relatively minor histor- ical figure, has developed an almost mythical character in C Pennsylvania's colonial history. But he did exist—he was born in 1710 in Conitz, East Prussia, emigrated to America in 1742, and died in German town in 1785.1 Throughout his eclectic career of missionary work, Post labored under the banners of the Moravian and Anglican churches, and as an independent in such diverse areas as New York, Ohio, Labrador, and the Mosquito Coast of Nicara- gua.2 His major contribution was his much discussed role as a diplomat in the withdrawal of the western Indians from the French interest in 1758. The assessment of his activities on the frontier has had an ener- getic existence in colonial historiography for the past 100 years. The main questions that underlie this debate are: what part did Post play in the mission of 1758; how effective was it in coercing the western Indians to be neutral; was Post sincere or a tool of govern- mental designs; and how significant was the role of Indian participa- tion in the success of General John Forbes' campaign against Fort 1 Post died on Apr. 23, 1785, and was buried in Hood's Cemetery, located in Germantown's Old Burial Grounds on Germantown Ave. and Logan St. Edward W. Hocker, Germantown, i68j-ipjs (Germantown, 1933), 74, 75. There is no complete biographical treatment cur- rently available on Post, although there are references to him in many of the histories of the Moravian Church and in the printed archives of Pennsylvania.
