Building Hope

It is with great excitement that the Louisiana Prison Chapel Foundation is partnering with Sheriff Bud Torres of Pointe Coupee Parish to renovate an existing building on the grounds of the Pointe Coupee Detention Center in New Roads. This building once housed inmates and now will become a new inter-faith chapel. Detention Center Warden Steve Juge says this has been a shared inspiration for him and Sheriff Torres. “We have seen the changes in state prisons and in the inmate population at the prisons with viable ministries. We want to do the same for our community. I would like to have religious programming seven days a week.” The Pointe Coupee Detention Center houses approximately 110 state inmates and 50-60 pre-trial inmates. Fifty-two percent of the Department of Corrections inmates are being held in parish facilities across the state. Ninety-five percent of those will go back into the communities within three, five or seven years. A person, with one parent in prison is seven times more likely to go to jail. Statistics prove when an inmate has a change of heart the inmate is 35 percent less likely to return making our communities safer.

…. and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 2 Corinthians 3:17
