Forum on Religion and Ecology at Yale http://fore.yale.edu/ Religion and Ecology News Articles November – December 2016 November 2, 2016 Why understanding Native American religion is important for resolving the Dakota Access Pipeline crisis By Rosalyn R. LaPier The Conversation In recent weeks, protests against the building of the Dakota Access Pipeline across North Dakota have escalated. Native American elders, families and children have set up tipis and tents on a campsite near the pipeline’s path in the hope of stopping the pipeline’s construction. Dave Archambault Jr., the leader of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe that is leading the efforts to stop the pipeline, summed up what is at the heart of the issue. In a brief two-minute statement before the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, he said, “Oil companies are causing deliberate destruction of our sacred places.” As a Native American scholar of environmental history and religious studies, I am often asked what Native American leaders mean when they say that certain landscapes are “sacred places” or “sacred sites.” What makes a mountain, hill or prairie a “sacred” place? Meaning of sacred spaces I learned from my grandparents about the sacred areas within Blackfeet tribal territory in Montana and Alberta, which is not far from Lakota tribal territory in the Dakotas. My grandparents said that sacred areas are places set aside from human presence. They identified two overarching types of sacred place: those set aside for the divine, such as a dwelling place, and those set aside for human remembrance, such as a burial or battle site.

Doctoral Dissertations. 987. https://opencommons.uconn.edu/dissertations/987 The Cult Novel: Three Paradigmatic Cases—L’Immoraliste, Bonjour Tristesse, Extension du Domaine de la Lutte Joseph A. Barreira, Ph. D. University of Connecticut, 2015 This dissertation proposes that there are specific and observable reasons why certain novels have attained the status of, and been commonly called, “cult novels” or “cult fiction”. It also proposes to delineate the development of this process through three major French novels of the twentieth century: André Gide’s L’Immoraliste (1902), Françoise Sagan’s Bonjour Tristesse (1954), and Michel Houellebecq’s Extension du Domaine de la Lutte (1994) as paradigmatic novels of the genre. Since cult fiction covers a wide range of literary “registers”, from Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mocking Bird, a realist novel seemingly aimed at “young readers”, to such emblems of “high” or “experimental literature” as James Joyce’s Ulysses, for instance, arriving at a contained, direct definition is no simple task. Nevertheless, there are some basic attributes that can help us to arrive at a working definition. Often, but not always, cult fiction originates outside the production of the literary establishment.

Urban Desires: Practicing Pleasure in the ‘City of Light,’ 1848-1900 by Andrew Israel Ross A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (History) in The University of Michigan 2011 Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Joshua H. Cole, Chair Professor Kathleen M. Canning Professor David Caron Professor Scott D. Spector © Andrew Israel Ross 2011 In memory of Marcella Katz ii Acknowledgements This project relied on the generous financial support of the University of Michigan Department of History, Rackham Graduate School, and the Georges Lurcy Charitable and Educational Trust. Middlebury College provided financial aid that allowed me to attend their Summer Language Institute. The wonderful teachers at Middlebury helped me develop the skills necessary to navigating the French archives with minimal embarrassment. The staffs at the Archives de la préfecture de police, the Archives nationales de France, the Archives de Paris, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, and the Bibliothèque historique de la ville de Paris all provided invaluable assistance. I have relied on the support of friends and family throughout this process. Jennifer Butterfield has been a dear friend since elementary school and has watched me progress from first grade to my doctorate. Kristyna Comer and Lucy Biederman have both inspired me through their art; their talent is equaled only by their generosity. Philip Herd, Daniel Humphrey, Sarah Williams, Nenad Simonovic, Kaya Burgess, and Thuvaraka and Jon Ware have all remained some of my dearest friends since my study abroad at Oxford. My yearly trip to London in order to visit is always the highlight of the year.

  • THE SEMINAR of JACQUES LACAN BOOK VIII Transference 1960
THE SEMINAR OF JACQUES LACAN BOOK VIII Transference 1960 - 1961 Translated by Cormac Gallagher from unedited French typescripts FOR PRIVATE USE ONLY 1 6 . 1 1 . 6 0 I 2 Seminar 1: Wednesday 16 November 1960 I announced for this coming year that I would deal with transference, with its subjective oddity (sa disparite subjective). It is not a term that was easily chosen. It underlines essentially something which goes further than the simple notion of asymmetry between subjects. It poses in the very title... it rebels, as I might say from the beginning, against the idea that intersubjectivity can by itself alone provide the framework in which the phenomenon is inscribed. There are words which are more or less appropriate in different tongues. I am looking for some equivalent for the word impair, for the subjective oddity of transference, for the oddity that it contains essentially. There is no term, except the very term imparite which is not used in French, to designate it. "In its supposed situation" (dans sa pretendue situation) my title also says, indicating by that some reference to this effort over the last years in analysis to organise, around the notion of situation, what happens in analytic treatment. The very word supposed is there again to say that I dispute the validity of, or at least that I take up a corrective position with respect to this effort. I do not believe that one can say purely and simply about psychoanalysis that what we have here is a situation. If it is one, it is one of which one could also say: it is not a situation or again, that it is a false situation.
