Abandoned at an early age, Oliver Twist (Barney Clark) is forced to live in a workhouse lorded over by the awful Mr. Bumble, who cheats the boys of their meager rations. Oliver spends the first nine years of his life in a badly run home for young orphans and then is transferred to a workhouse for adults. After the other boys bully Oliver into asking for more gruel at the end of a meal, Mr. Bumble, the parish beadle, offers five pounds to anyone who will take the boy away from the workhouse. Desperate yet determined, Oliver makes his escape to the streets of London. Penniless and alone, he is lured into a world of crime by the sinister Fagin (Ben Kingsley) -- the mastermind of a gang of pint-sized pickpockets. Oliver's rescue by the kindly Mr. Brownlow is only the beginning of a series of adventures that lead him to the promise of a better life. ix ROMAN POLANSKI BIOGRAPHY Roman Polanski (Rajmund Roman Liebling) is a Polish film director, producer, writer and actor. Born in Paris, France 18 August 1933. Having made films in Poland, Britain, France and the USA he is considered one of the few "truly international filmmakers. Roman Polanski's parents returned to Poland from France in 1936, three years before World War II began: on Germany's invasion in 1939 as a Jewish family they were all sent to the Krakow ghetto. His parents were then captured and sent to two different concentration camps, his father to Mauthausen-Gusen in Austria where he survived the war and his mother to Auschwitz where she was murdered. He witnessed his father's capture and then, at 7, managed to escape the ghetto and survive the war at first wandering through the Polish countryside pretending to be a Roman-Catholic visiting his relatives. Although this saved his life he was severely mistreated suffering a near fatal beating which left him with a fractured skull. Local people usually ignored the cinemas where German films were shown, but Polanski seemed little concerned by the propaganda and often went to the movies. As the war progressed Poland became increasingly war torn and he lived life as a tramp, hiding in barns and forests, eating whatever he could steal or find. Still under 12 years old he encountered some Nazi soldiers who forced him to hold targets while they shot at them. At the war's end in 1945, he was reunited with his father who sent him to technical school, but young

En este caso, pretenderemos acercarnos a dos comedias, escasas en su filmografía, como son What? (1972) y Carnage (2011), muy distantes en el tiempo aunque con interesantes coincidencias temáticas y narrativas. Nuestro interés primordial será ahondar en su retrato de las figuras femeninas de ambas obras y su ubicación, física y metafórica, en el espacio de la casa. Siguiendo la estela de maestros como Luis Buñuel, Marco Ferreri o Stanley Kubrick, Polanski encerrará a sus mujeres en un refugio hostil y sin salida para que vaya cayéndose progresivamente la máscara de la sociedad moderna, dejando salir, poco a poco, al animal primitivo que nunca hemos dejado de ser. Esto no es una casa, sino una balsa llena de náufragos tratando de sobrevivir.

W hierarchii panu- jącej wówczas na uczelni i wśród studentów, na samym początku musiał co prawda dobijać się o uznanie wśród starszych roczników, ale po pewnym czasie jego pozycja w środowisku stała się czymś oczywi- stym i niekwestionowanym, zarówno pod względem towarzyskim, jak i artystycznym. Romek od początku był kimś. Uważano go wtedy bez porównania bardziej za aktora niż reży- sera. Jako ktoś wielce uzdolniony i obiecu- jący, został zaprotegowany przez wykładowcę Szkoły Antoniego Boh- dziewicza, który zobaczył go po raz pierwszy na scenie w tytułowej roli w socrealistycznym przedstawieniu Syn pułku w Teatrze Młodego Wi- dza (1953). Polański – jeszcze nie będąc studentem Szkoły Filmowej – pojechał na plan filmowy do Bielska-Białej i zagrał u Konrada Nałę- ckiego w drugiej noweli Trzech opowieści (1953). Tam właśnie poznał znakomitego operatora Jerzego Lipmana. To on otworzył Polańskie- mu oczy na kino i sztukę filmową, pierwszy wprowadził go w jej arka- na, a także sprawił, że rok później Andrzej Wajda powierzył mu rolę Mundka w swoim debiucie Pokolenie (1954). Gdy tylko znalazł się w Łodzi na Targowej, jego talenty aktor- skie zostały natychmiast zagospodarowane zarówno w profesjonalnej kinematografii, jak i na potrzeby etiud studenckich.

Its fortitude is embodied by Andrzej Wajda – still going strong 50 years after his first feature Slice of life ... Photograph: AP There aren't many traces on the internet of the early Polish pioneers: people such as Kazimierz Prószyński and Bolesław Matuszewski who were operating at the turn of the century, turning out silent short docos called things like Ślizgawka w Łazienkach (Skating-rink in the Royal Baths). (Prószyński was also a pioneering camera inventor, developing a model called a pleograph in 1894, and a handheld effort called an aeroscope in 1909.) Nor is there any link for Anton in Warsaw for the First Time, Poland's legendary first feature film, directed by and starring Antoni Fertner in 1908. Fertner, though, went on to a respectable career as an actor in the interwar period – you can see him as an old man in Książątko (1937, above) and Gehenna (1938). The first Polish film-maker to leave a significant dent in cinema history was Władysław Starewicz – whose complicated ethnic background highlights Poland's own political travails at the time. Born in Moscow to émigrés from the part of the old Polish- Lithuanian commonwealth that had been absorbed into the Russian empire after partition in 1795, Starewicz had grown up in the Lithuanian city of Kaunas and went back to Moscow to work on his pioneering insect stop-motion films.

    FALL SEASON KICKS OFF WITH MAJOR RETROSPECTIVE ON ROMAN POLANSKI AT THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART Roman Polanski September 7–30, 2011 The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters New York, August 10, 2011—The Museum of Modern Art recognizes the achievements of Roman Polanski with a complete retrospective of the filmmaker's works, September 7–30, 2011, in The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters. Over the course of a half century, Polanski has become widely recognized as one of the premier international filmmakers, directing films in Poland, England, the U.S., Italy, and France and working with distinguished actors such as Jack Nicholson, Adrien Brody, Catherine Deneuve, Mia Farrow, Ben Kingsley, and Nastassja Kinski. Polanski’s films have garnered eight Academy Awards and over 25 nominations, among many other accolades. The retrospective will include all of Polankski’s 18 feature films and a collection of his early student short films. This exhibition is organized by Charles Silver, Curator, Department of Film, The Museum of Modern Art. Born in Paris, Polanski moved to Poland, the homeland of his parents, shortly before the start of World War II. Losing his mother in a concentration camp, Polanski lived in hiding as a Jewish fugitive in Nazi-occupied Poland. After the war ended, Polanski reunited with his father and shortly thereafter enrolled at the National Film School in Lodz, where he directed a number of short films including A Murderer (1957), Two Men and a Wardrobe (1958), and When Angels Fall (1959), all of which will be shown as part of the Polanski’s Student Films program in this exhibition.
