  • Jonathan Butler Close to You
Jonathan Butler Close To You What the world needs now is love…but as is often the case, what the world needs begins with one person and one household. Thus, the crux of the story behind South African singer/guitarist Jonathan Butler’s 23rd album, Close To You, his tribute to the hallowed pop canon of Burt Bacharach (music) and Hal David (lyrics). The 11-song project features 10 Bacharach/David gemstones from the mid-60s to early 70s (including vocal versions of “The Look Of Love,” “Walk On By,” “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again,” “This Guy’s In Love With You” and the lead single “What The World Needs Now Is Love,” plus instrumental versions of “Do You Know The Way To San Jose” and “I Say A Little Prayer”) as well as one original composition, the ebulliently autobiographical “Cape Town.” Following several monumental decades of moving from South Africa to America, building a worldwide audience for his music while also raising his children to adulthood, Jonathan Butler arrived at a crossroads in his marriage which ended in divorce. A few years later Jonathan met violinist Nadira Kimberly, who brought profound new meaning to his life. Her presence by his side became the inspiration for Close To You. “Right then I realized this was not the season to write about me or my relationship,” Butler shares. “It was a season for me to listen to what is in the atmosphere. The music of Burt Bacharach is what I was hearing. The next day I called my manager and told him I wanted to do a Bacharach songbook album and reinvent myself in the process.

  • HELLO DOLLY Program Notes.Pdf
` PROGRAM NOTES By Joshua S. Ritter Goodspeed Education & Library Director When Hello, Dolly! opened on Broadway in January of 1964, the nation was still reeling from the shock of President Kennedy’s assassination and apprehensive about the worsening situation in Vietnam. The Beatles invasion had just begun; a youthful fervor for change and rock ‘n’ roll was palpable. David Merrick, a preternaturally gifted producer, could sense the longing of another American generation. He undoubtedly knew the time was right to provide the comfort and nostalgia of a good old-fashioned Broadway musical. After all, he was in possession of a successful theatrical property that was screaming to be set to music. It could also serve as a star vehicle for Ethel Merman, and it contained a 1890’s period flavor that would offer much-needed diversion from current events. Merrick began assembling a team of future Broadway legends to give music and new life to Thorton Wilder’s highly-successful play The Matchmaker. The title would quickly change to Dolly! A Damned Exasperating Woman; Call on Dolly; and finally to Hello, Dolly!. Merrick hired Gower Champion and Michael Stewart, with whom he had previously worked on Carnival!, to stage and adapt the book for what would later be called Hello, Dolly!. Merrick hired the young Jerry Herman to compose the music soon after his success penning the score for his first Broadway musical, Milk and Honey. Champion, Stewart, and Herman worked together to anchor the show to the title song and “Put on your Sunday Clothes.” These became massive production numbers, the former involving whirling waiters, trays of food, and Dolly Levi’s grand descent down a flight of stairs.

box office: 01234 362337 welcome www.bedfringe.com Welcome to your 10th anniversary Fringe Festival… Over 100 events under 1 roof… in 10 days! #itsinthecan We made it! We can’t believe it’s been ten years since we started back in 2007… the days before Twitter… Facebook was just hitting our screens and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was released… I know this because half the front of house team disappeared one morning heading in the direction of Waterstones! To date we have programmed just under 825 shows. That’s over 2000 performers! That puts Bedfringe in the top five largest Fringe Festivals in the country. This year we are running exclusively from The Quarry Theatre hosting events in the main auditorium, studio theatre and forecourt. Highlights for me are Bane 4, Paul Foot, WiFi Wars and Mitch Benn. However… take a risk and see something you might not usually choose to see… that’s what it’s all about. Catch one or two of our world premier shows and be amongst the person to see the next big name in comedy! We are hosting over 40 Edinburgh shows plus more Photo credit: Aidan Huxford than 30 shows from local performers so hopefully there is something James & Fiona for everyone during this special year. James Pharaoh: Festival Director ‘Sum up Bedfringe in about 200 words’ were the instructions I was given from Mr Pharaoh. I tried, but failed many times so instead this is what Bedfringe means to me. I started back in 2007 as a lowly technician, with little knowledge of lighting desks and even less of what a fringe festival was.
