Second, I would like to thank my parents for their wonderful upbringing that shaped me into who I am today. To my four lovely siblings and in-laws for being there for me and went through all the hardship with me, being supportive and care. Tanny, thanks for pampering me. Third, I would like to thank my classmate, Double, Winnie, Tzu Yun, Jenny, Rosanne, Lucy and Win for assisting me all along. Knowing them was the happiest moment of my entire study life in Taiwan. To all of the influential music teachers that I have ever had in my life, Cher Siang, Justin, Juan, Alex, Adil for introducing me the joy of playing jazz music. • An Old Story
Mugham Jazz About a half dozen articles on jazz, delivered to each floor of the fourteen-story home of the official Soviet Azerbaijani press, all went directly to the waste basket – not read. In the early eighties, now viewed as the final years of the cold war and the beginning of the thawing of the socialist regime, censorship on two levels, official and self-asserted, continued to render jazz as an ambivalent and thus avoidable subject. During the same months that my other articles on music, theater, and the arts were published in various papers and journals, my attempts to offer or promote anything written on jazz met with friendly dismissal or cautious advice. Until one day the editor of the sports section of the major komsomol (Young Communist League) paper Youth of Azerbaijan, himself a jazz fan, proposed a scheme. Substituting for the main editor during a two-day business trip, my fellow conspirator was in charge of daily issues. Upon his call, I left with the secretary, who knew me, a jazz article with, according to our plan, an attached note –“Solicited by the editor – urgent”– the ambiguity of the message simultaneously explaining and excusing the inclusion of the article in that day’s issue. Running to the newsstand the following morning and finding a three-column article in the fresh-smelling newspaper, I, a twenty- five-year-old classically trained pianist and, as a hobby, a free-lance cultural observer, returned home to read simultaneously from several copies, indulging myself with Turkish coffee. Within a few minutes, the phone rang and an official voice stated that in an hour I was expected at the office of the Secretary of the Azerbaijan Young Communist League.

  • Mugham Creativity in Pre-Soviet, Soviet, and Post-Soviet Azerbaijan
Musical and Ontological Possibilities of Mugham Creativity in pre-Soviet, Soviet, and post-Soviet Azerbaijan by Polina Dessiatnitchenko A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosoophy Graduate Department of Music University of Toronto © Copyright by Polina Dessiatnitchenko 2017 Musical and Ontological Possibilities of Mugham Creativity in pre-Soviet, Soviet, and post-Soviet Azerbaijan Polina Dessiatnitchenko Doctor of Philosophy in Ethnomusicology Graduate Department of Music, University of Toronto 2017 Abstract The different angles from which the phenomenon of mugham creativity can be approached all point to the significance of sung ghazal poetry. Even in instrumental renditions of mugham, the overriding presence of sung texts manifests itself through the musical structure, pace, technique and, most importantly, an imaginative and interpretive engagement with meanings that musicians undergo. In this dissertation, the link between music and poetry and its role in mugham creativity are investigated from both diachronic and synchronic perspectives. First, pre-Soviet, Soviet and post-Soviet contexts are examined to reveal how changes in musical and textual parameters influenced creativity and shaped its historical trajectory in Azerbaijan. Second, native terminology, musical examples, characteristics and experiences of creativity are explored using hermeneutic phenomenology in order to shed light on the creative process in the moment of performance. It is my contention that interpretation based on meanings in ghazal – ii – poetry that are rooted in Islamic sciences opens up both musical and ontological possibilities for musicians embarked on the mugham journey. This creates a state that is often difficult to express discursively as musicians themselves resort to phrases such as “revelation”, “explosion of thinking”, and “the self is taken from the self” that show only the limits of language to explain what goes on.

After the disintegration of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, the state- run music industry collapsed, taking the infrastructure for music distribution with it. In the years since, a music industry has not been rebuilt due to uncertain economic realities and a shaky political situation. Because of this, performers have difficulty spreading their music through the mass media or by selling it, and alternative distributory methods have developed. The concept of distribution, which is often associated with the activities of the music industry, is replaced with circulation, expressing music’s de-centralized movement and the role individuals play in making music move. This dissertation establishes two spheres through which music circulates: the first is characterized by a higher level of control by the government ii and by businesses, and musicians have limited access to it; the second involves a lower level of control, and therefore musicians and audience members can more easily utilize it.

August 2009 The 8th Nordic Jazz Conference was hosted by the recently established Center for Dansk Jazzhistorie at Aalborg University, Denmark 25-27. August 2009. The conference was organized as an activity within the Netværk for Dansk Jazzhistorie, funded by the Danish research council. The main focus of the conference was the recent research into national and regional jazz history in the Nordic countries and whether there is compliance in the way that we view our national jazz histories. Our respective national jazz archives play a vital role in this issue, and a discussion on future collaboration between the archives was scheduled for the last day of the conference. This years conference had a number of representatives from outside the Nordic countries. Dr. Wolfram Knauer, the head of Jazzinstitut Darmstadt, was invited as keynote speaker to discuss European jazz history (of histories?) and to moderate the discussion of archive collaboration, both in Nordic and the European perspective.
