Queer As Alla: Subversion And/Or Re-Affirmation of the Homophobic Nationalist Discourse of Normality in Post-Soviet Vilnius
RASA NAVICKAITE Queer as Alla: Subversion and/or re-affirmation of the homophobic nationalist discourse of normality in post-Soviet Vilnius IF YOU ARE non-heterosexual and you live in Vilnius, then gay- friendly options for going out are pretty limited for you. You would probably end up in the same place each weekend – a little under- ground gay club, called Soho. While for the gay community it is a well-known place to have drinks, to dance and to flirt, those who do not clearly identify as lesbian, gay, bi or trans usually have never even heard about this place. And those who do hear about it tend to imagine it as a place ”outside” the boundaries of normality and mo- rality, a place for those who live on the margins of society, delimited according to the axis of sexuality, or, to put it in a coarse language – a ”nest of whores” (Tereškinas 2004, 32). Although the times of the totalitarian Communist regime are gone since more than twenty years, the strict boundaries between what is normal and what is not, persist and in some cases have be- come even more rigid (Stukuls 1999, 537). The high level of soci- etal homophobia,1 encouraged by nationalist discourse is a perfect example of this boundary control. Although LGBT organisations present visibility and openness of non-heteronormative sexualities lambda nordica 4/2012 127 © Föreningen Lambda Nordica 2012 Queer as Alla as their main goal, it does not change the situation, where the ma- jority of gays are ”in the closet” (Atviri.lt 2012a). -
Sveriges Just Nu Mest Lysande Stjärna Gör Succé Igen!
2009-08-24 08:00 CEST Sveriges just nu mest lysande stjärna gör succé igen! Sveriges just nu absolut största musikexport, Basshunter, röner extrema framgångar utomlands. -

A Study of the Rap Music Industry in Bogota, Colombia by Laura
The Art of the Hustle: A Study of the Rap Music Industry in Bogota, Colombia by Laura L. Bunting-Hudson Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2017 © 2017 Laura L. Bunting-Hudson All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT The Art of the Hustle: A Study of the Rap Music Industry in Bogota, Colombia Laura L. Bunting-Hudson How do rap artists in Bogota, Colombia come together to make music? What is the process they take to commodify their culture? Why are some rappers able to become socially mobile in this process, while others are less so? What is technology’s role in all of this? This ethnography explores those questions, as it carefully documents the strategies utilized by various rap groups in Bogota, Colombia to create social mobility, commoditize products and to create a different vision of modernity within the hip-hop community, as an alternative to the ideals set forth by mainstream Colombian society. Resistance Art Poetry (RAP), is said to have originated in the United States but has become a form of international music. In conducting ethnographic research from December of 2012 to October 2014, I was able to discover how rappers organize themselves politically, how they commoditize their products and distribute them to create various types of social mobilities. In this dissertation, I constructed models to typologize rap groups in Bogota, Colombia, which I call polities of rappers to discuss how these groups come together, take shape, make plans and execute them to reach their business goals. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract As popular music eclipsed Hollywood as the most powerful mode of seduction of Western youth, rock-stars erupted through the counter-culture as potent political figures. Following its sensational arrival, the politics of popular musical culture has however moved from the shared experience of protest movements and picket lines and to an individualised and celebrified consumerist experience. As a consequence what emerged, as a controversial and subversive phenomenon, has been de-fanged and transformed into a mechanism of establishment support. -

How to Re-Shine Depeche Mode on Album Covers
Sociology Study, December 2015, Vol. 5, No. 12, 920‐930 D doi: 10.17265/2159‐5526/2015.12.003 DAVID PUBLISHING Simple but Dominant: How to Reshine Depeche Mode on Album Covers After 80’s Cinla Sekera Abstract The aim of this paper is to analyze the album covers of English band Depeche Mode after 80’s according to the principles of graphic design. Established in 1980, the musical style of the band was turned from synth‐pop to new wave, from new wave to electronic, dance, and alternative‐rock in decades, but their message stayed as it was: A non‐hypocritical, humanist, and decent manner against what is wrong and in love sincerely. As a graphic design product, album covers are pre‐print design solutions of two dimensional surfaces. Graphic design, as a design field, has its own elements and principles. Visual elements and typography are the two components which should unite with the help of the six main principles which are: unity/harmony; balance; hierarchy; scale/proportion; dominance/emphasis; and similarity and contrast. All album covers of Depeche Mode after 80’s were designed in a simple but dominant way in order to form a unique style. On every album cover, there are huge color, size, tone, and location contrasts which concluded in simple domination; domination of a non‐hypocritical, humanist, and decent manner against what is wrong and in love sincerely. Keywords Graphic design, album cover, design principles, dominance, Depeche Mode Design is the formal and functional features graphic design are line, shape, color, value, texture, determination process, made before the production of and space. -
Rose La Rose and the Re-Ownership of American Burlesque, 1935-1972
TAUGHT IT TO THE TRADE: ROSE LA ROSE AND THE RE-OWNERSHIP OF AMERICAN BURLESQUE, 1935-1972 DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Elizabeth Wellman Graduate Program in Theatre The Ohio State University 2015 Dissertation Committee: Jennifer Schlueter, Advisor Beth Kattelman Joy Reilly Copyright by Elizabeth Wellman 2015 ABSTRACT Declaring burlesque dead has been a habit of the twentieth century. Robert C. Allen quoted an 1890s letter from the first burlesque star of the American stage, Lydia Thompson in Horrible Prettiness: Burlesque and American Culture (1991): “[B]urlesque as she knew it ‘has been retired for a time,’ its glories now ‘merely memories of the stage.’”1 In 1931, Bernard Sobel opined in Burleycue: An Underground History of Burlesque Days, “Alas! You will never get a chance to see one of the real burlesque shows again. They are gone forever…”2 In 1938, The Billboard published an editorial that began, “On every hand the cry is ‘Burlesque is dead.’”3 In fact, burlesque had been declared dead so often that editorials began popping up insisting it could be revived, as Joe Schoenfeld’s 1943 op-ed in Variety did: “[It] may be in a state of putrefaction, but it is a lusty and kicking decomposition.”4 It is this “lusty and kicking decomposition” which characterizes the published history of burlesque. Since its modern inception in the late nineteenth century, American burlesque has both been framed and framed itself within this narrative of degeneration. -
