NU converted the miscue into a 37-22 lead. Freshman Dominique Dorsey took his first career kickoff return 87 yards but the Rebels were turned away at the goal line. After forcing a NU punt, another Thomas Hail Mary attempt found Johnson from 53 yards out to give UNLV hope. Despite seven passes dropped by Rebel receivers, Thomas threw for a career-high 304 yards. Johnson set a Mountain West Conference record with 174 yards on a career-high eight receptions while Troy Mason added 106 yards receiving. The win broke a seven-game losing streak in Reno and marked the first time UNLV downed its 10-21 WYOMING 193 northern neighbor in successive seasons for the first time since 1976-77. The Rebels, who improved to 3- 10-28 at Ole Miss 164 0 on artificial turf under Robinson, won a game after being shut out in the first half for the first time since a 23- 11-4 at Utah 193 22 victory at New Mexico on Sept. 21, 1991. 11-11 NEW MEXICO 143 11-25 at SDSU 90 GAME 6 IN REVIEW 12-2 at Hawaii 37 12-21 ARKANSAS 115 UNLV 31, SAN DIEGO ST. 3 2001 REBELS ROLL FOR FIRST MWC WIN 8-30 at Arkansas 25 LAS VEGAS -- (Oct. 13, 2001) UNLV (2-4) won its second straight game 9-7 NORTHWESTERN 187 overall and evened its Mounain West record at 1-1 by routing San Diego State (2- 9-22 at Arizona 184 4) before 22,100 at Sam Boyd Stadium and an ABC regional TV audience. The Rebels improved to 21-13 9-29 BYU 167 in homecoming games by dominating in all facets of the game. On offense, UNLV rolled to 274 yards on the 10-6 at UNR 243 ground and 427 overall. On defense, SDSU was held to 39 yards rushing, including just 46 by the nation’s 10-13 SDSU 39 third-leading rusher Larry Ned. On special teams, UNLV blocked a punt, which led to a score, and returned 10-20 CSU 151 another for a touchdown. With speedster Dominique Dorsey sidelined early with a sprained ankle, the Rebels were led by a career-high 136 yards on 23 carries by RB Joe Haro, who had his third 100-yard game by halftime. The scoring opened with an eight-yard Jason Thomas to DeJhown Mandley touch- down pass. After the Aztecs hit a 34-yard field goal, Rebel booter Dillon Pieffer kicked his fourth consecu- tive three-pointer from 32 yards out. With Thomas off the field with a mild concussion, a 57-yard punt return by Troy Mason set up reserve freshman signal-caller Kurt Nantkes to hit Steven Costa for a 10-yard score. Later in the quarter, UNLV blocked a punt and Thomas returned to run for an eight-yard score. With SDSU unable to move the ball with a minute to go, the Rebels called timeouts to force the Aztecs to punt -- and the decision would deliver the knockout blow. Mason caught the punt at his own 48 and, with no time on the clock, returned the ball 52 yards for a touchdown and a shocking 31-3 halftime lead -- the largest for UNLV in 17 games. With the outcome virtually decided, UNLV concentrated on running out the clock behind Haro and seven other runners. Despite emptying the bench, the Rebel defense held off all Aztec scoring threats and only a missed Pieffer 29-yard field-goal attempt dimmed the team’s total effort. The game marked the first time that UNLV downed SDSU in successive seasons since 1983-84 and the 31-3 final meant UNLV held an opponent to 3 points or less for the sixth time since the school moved to Div. I in 1978. UNLV FOOTBALL NEWS 2001

UNLV got back in the game John Jackson (3rd Year/New York, ‘56) on a bizarre play where a Jason Thomas pass was caught by a falling Michael Johnson, who, laying Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line: on his back, flicked the ball in the air to a streaking Troy Mason who ran it in 10 yards for the lateral-aided Rob Boras (3rd Year/DePauw, ‘92) touchdown. The Rams, who struggled offensively all day, used a trick play for their next score as running Tight Ends/Option Coach: back Henri Childs threw a halfback pass to quarterback Bradlee Van Pelt, who made his way for a 56- Ken Niumatalolo (3rd Year/Hawaii, ’89) yard score. A botched extra point made the score 16-7 and then UNLV used a short Dillon Pieffer field goal just before halftime to close to within six. To start the third quarter, the Rebels forced a fumble of their own Wide Receivers/Quarterbacks: and Joe Haro ran in from 11 yards out to give UNLV its only lead of the day, 17-16. However, Dominique DelVaughn Alexander (2nd Year/USC, ‘95) Dorsey’s second of his two fumbles would then lead to another CSU field goal. The Rebels would drive 64 Defensive Coordinator/Secondary: yards before stalling and missing a 37-yard field goal attempt that left the score at 19-17. In the fourth quarter, Mike Bradeson (6th Year/Boise State, ’81) CSU completed its only long drive of the game (11 plays, 80 yards) with a seven-yard Chris Pittman Defensive Backs: scoring run. UNLV answered with it own 80-yard drive, which was capped by Haro’s second score from Steve Leach (3rd Year/Troy State, ‘91) five yards out to make the score 26-24 with seven minutes remaining.
