November is a time for giving thanks. Not only do we have the holiday that makes all turkeys break into a cold sweat, but this special month also gives us Veteran’s Day. In Hampton Roads, it’s easy to find a lot of pride around those men and women who have served in our nation’s military. With every branch represented throughout our region, we enjoy a rich and diverse community of active and retired members of our armed forces. These are people we pass in the grocery store, in the coffee house or on the street. These people are our friends, and they are our neighbors. They are a critical part of our society.

On the cover of this month’s guide, you will see a photo of Keith A. Campbell. Sp/4 Campbell knowingly and willingly laid down his life in the service of our country to save his fellow comrades during the Vietnam War. His heroic actions earned him our nation’s second highest award, the Distinguished Service Cross. His name appears on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. In addition to his distinctive service, Keith A. Campbell has another distinction – he was a Virginia native.

WHRO begins a new initiative this month, to find a photo of every Virginia native listed on the Wall. It’s an ambitious but achievable goal, and you can learn more about it on page 14.

Continuing the practice of thanking our veterans, you can watch the celebration of military from all around the world when you tune in November 9 and enjoy our very own Music and Might, An International Military Spectacular. We also offer a score of engaging programs on WHRO TV like Iwo Jima: from Combat to Comrades and Debt of Honor: Disabled Veterans In American History. You’ll find them listed beginning on page 5, and in the TV Highlights section of this issue.

On radio, you rely on WHRV to offer special programming throughout the month, and on WHRO FM you can enjoy military marches and other classical selections on November 11.

Serving in the military isn’t like having a 9-5 job, it is a total lifestyle, and it requires a four or more year commitment to serve something greater. We honor this commitment, and we give thanks for our veterans. We tell their stories because they need to be told, we remember those who sacrificed – including those who paid the ultimate price – to protect the ideals of a grateful nation.

Not only will Another View dedicate quarterly broadcasts for open conversations about race, we’ll help to facilitate community town halls about various topics, assisted by a group of panelists to help guide the discussions.

The firstRace: Let’s Talk About It community forum took place before a packed house at Virginia Wesleyan College in September. It began with a video presentation looking at the events in South Carolina that ended with the confederate flag coming down. The conversation began with the question: “The flag is down, now what?” The second town hall will take place here at WHRO on November 19 at 6:30 pm. Like all town halls, it will be preceded by the Another View radio broadcast titled Privilege, Power and Difference, which will broadcast live on WHRV 89.5FM on November 6. Hail Bright Cecilia! November 22

Saint Cecilia is often pictured with a viola, sometimes a chamber organ, which befits her status as the patron saint of music. The early Christian martyr has been celebrated for her association with music since the 16th century - in literature, the visual arts and especially, of course, in music. We invite you to tune in on the feast day of Saint Cecilia, Sunday November 22 for a celebration of her influence on a few good friends – Mozart, Handel, Bach and Beethoven, among them.
