MERITORIOUS Merit 25 OPERATING NOTES 1.) This MERITORIOUS Merit 25 OPERATING NOTES 1.) This boat is more like Pomodoro (Catalina Capri 25) than the Commanders in handling. Like Pomodoro it has a fin keel, but allegedly it has far less leeway 2.) Head foil : The M25 has a "tuff luff" twin-track jib luff track, very popular with racing boats, allowing, among other things, "peel changes" - the ability to raise a new jib without lowering the jib in use and sacrificing time. When sailing without the jib, keep the folded jib secure upon the deck using the bungee cards along the bow To deploy the jib : Keep the tack secured with the bungee hook, feed the head into the prefeeder 1st then into the foil track and hoist. Normally a foredeck crewmember is needed to ensure the head feeds correctly. Securing the headfoil-- The headfoil is a loose fit upon the forestay. To prevent noise and unnecessary wear, wrap the topping lift around the headfoil and connect to the foreguy and keep taut. Foreguy : Operated at the mast, normally by the mast/foredeck position Twingers (aka tweekers): these are used to adjust the feet of the spinnaker. Backstay - adjustable like Pomodoro's; it should be left eased to the slip mark ( but not completely slack) when docked, and is tensioned based on wind conditions (less for more power (heavy chop); conversely, to reduce heeling during higher wind conditions, it can be tensioned and will move the draft of the main forward/tighten the forestay. Docking : - Westerly - similar to the other boats, close reach and slow sail Northerly/Southerly - point, speed, and shoot Sail Stowage : the main and jib are to be ROLLED, not flaked Gear Stowage : We will NOT be stowing the following on this boat: - Wet foulies ( take back to clubhouse) - Wet PFD's (place in dockbox) - Wet booties (wear/take back to clubhouse) - Wet anything (may they rot elsewhere) .

The grounds are looking good with the spring greenery, and I would like to commend Walter and the Building and Grounds Committee for the work that they have put into cleaning up the waterfront. It is nice to be able to see the lake without all the scrub and brush in the way. Spring Regatta was a success though there were a few green crews out there.

  • Cruising Boat Skipper Information File
CRUISING BOAT SKIPPER INFORMATION FILE Revisions Adopted by Board October 5, 2016 This Cruising Boat Skipper Information File (SIF) sets forth the skipper responsibilities and SCOW procedures specific to the use of SCOW's three cruising boats – Rebecca (a 1980 Catalina 25, Hiatus (a 2003 Catalina 250), and Skirmish (a 1981 Capri 25), which are docked on G dock. The SIF supplements the SCOW Skipper Requirements and Boat Use Policy, which contains general procedures for use of all club boats. Cruising Skippers must be familiar with both and the Washington Sailing Marina Rules, which are posted on the Bylaws and Policies page of the SCOW website. This SIF only emphasizes important features of the boats; it is not an “instruction manual” on how to operate the boats. Detailed operating instructions, equipment inventories and stowage plans are on board each boat. Each skipper must be familiar with how to operate all of the systems on each boat. This SIF is not a substitute for a Cruising Boat class or other land/water training. Our boats are for enjoyment by all of our members. Take pride in our boats removing all trash and cleaning the cabin after use. Please scrub the deck and cockpit and wipe the cabin sole after each use. Stow equipment only where identified on the stowage list. Failing to return equipment to the proper location endangers the next crew, who could be unable to find equipment in an emergency. Refill the gas tank if less than 3/4 full (and it would be courteous if you filled the tank no matter what).

Somehow it seems like September has been hotter than August. We have the Tulsa Cat Fight this weekend, there should be a few dozen Hobies racing. Come out and spectate, official regatta ceremonies are at Washington Irving South. The MC Southwest Regional Championship and steak dinner is in two weeks pre register @ mcscow.org to sail or RSVP on our website for dinner. The Windycup and Club Meeting BBQ is a month away. The Sail for Steve regatta was a great success! Everything came together for a perfect afternoon of sailing. We did not reach Steve’s hopes of having 50 boats out, there was close to 40. A superb team made it possible for Steve to ride on the committee boat during the regatta, Steve was extremely happy about getting on the water! I am certain we can get 60 boats out there next year! Thank You to Paul Foerster, all the Sailors, Volunteers and Donors for making this event come together and raise over $10k for APSO. We have plenty of nice sailing days left until old man winter comes down, don’t sleep on it. Cheers! Drew Ziegler Charity Regatta Review The 2018 “Sail for Steve” Charity Regatta is history and again was a booming success.

  • February 2018 SYSCO Newsletter
From the Front Call to Community: To Go Boldly, Part II February 2018 Truth to Power? Racer's Corner Racing Report February 2018 SYSCO Meeting Minutes Small Yacht Sailing Club of Oregon STARTING LINE CYC Sailing on Sunday spinnaker action! Photo courtesy of Jenn Thompson. From the Front Michael Morrissey, Commodore I just got off OB1 after a wild and wacky weekend sailing the Portlandia Cup sponsored by the Willamette Sailing Club. The general idea is to expose high school sailors to keelboat racing on the Columbia River. The WSC has run the Portlandia Cup for 4 years and it has taken on different formats. This year it was open to one-design boats that sail on the Columbia with an entry requirement of each boat having a high school student as part of the crew to qualify. Several SYSCO Merit-25s thought that this was a good idea and signed up for the races, to be run over a weekend in February. A Merit 25 owner from Newport, Greg Krutzikowsky, who coaches high school sailing on Yaquina Bay, worked with Tod Bassham and other Merits saying that he would join the races with some Yaquina Bay youths if we could find him a boat. Jim Caldwell, owner of Runaway, stepped up and graciously offered his vessel and suddenly, there were 4 Merits ready to pound the river with enthusiastic sailors from the Y generation. Other high schoolers were identified by the WSC. The idea was to have a number of races on Saturday and then join forces with SOS for the Sunday event.
