Why study at UTokyo—Tradition and Innovation Period of Study / Research Founded in 1877, the University of Tokyo (UTokyo) is the oldest national university in Japan. Over the course of its long and distinguished history, the university has produced 1 April to March some of the most outstanding scholars, scientists, and social and political leaders of Japan, 2 September to August including eight Nobel laureates, 16 prime ministers of Japan, and one Fields Medal winner. As Japan’s most comprehensive research university, UTokyo has ten undergraduate facul- 3 April to August ties, 15 graduate schools and 26 research institutes. Exchange students are allowed to choose Housing between TYPE G (G for Graduate ) or TYPE U (U for Undergraduate) program depending on their purpose of participation Exchange students may apply for university housing or find Private Accommodations (Short-term Rented Apartment, and/or their proficiency in the English and/or Japanese language. The TYPE G program allows graduate students to take the Guest House, and so on.)
