The regular system of bidding applies i.e., highest bid at the finish time wins the record and pays the offered price. No drop-downs, no extensions. All winners are notified within an hour of the auction end. Hope that’s clear, thanks for your attention. MIN. BID MAY RARE SOUL AUCTION A THE TOPICS HEY GIRL (WHERE ARE YOU CHADWICK 102 VG++ 600 GOING?) WD Superb midtempo soul from this great four-man soul group issued on Joe Evans’ Carnival label subsidiary Chadwick and as rare as anything in the whole group of labels. Written by two of the group members the song takes its cue from ‘Love Makes The World Go ‘Round’ – and that’s no bad thing! B JOANN COURCY I GOT THE POWER TWIRL 2026 WD VG++ 750 A hot tip for any deejay – if you want to turn up the atmosphere and get the night buzzing then slam this one on the decks. The powerhouse female vocalist remains unknown; however, producer Gregory Carroll had been a noted member of various doo-wop groups in his time. Twirl Records was connected to Harry Balk in Detroit but was based in New York courtesy of his associate Irving Micahnik. C MARION I MUST BE LOSING YOU R RECORDS VG+ 200 STEWART 1516 Staying in N.Y. for this poignant big beat ballad that ticks all the boxes for despair and drama. This particular copy is the West Coast press of the release on styrene and has a mark or two but plays fine… check the soundbite. D ALLAN HARRIS and GET READY EXACT VG++ 250 PERPETUAL MOTION CHANGE 4917 First spun by Richard Searling (covered up as ‘Inner Space’) in the late Wigan/early Stafford Modern Soul revival. At the time it was only known as a 12-inch and only later did the superior 45 version show up. The reason for the rarity of the single might be that virtually all copies have the labels on the wrong side and were withdrawn, as is the case with this particular copy. E SAM & KITTY I’VE GOT SOMETHING GOOD FOUR M- 250 BROTHERS 452 Its strange that sometimes obscure non-hits i.e., rare records, come out in several different formats. Such is the case with this iconic stomper, but this copy is probably the rarest of these – for a start it is stone mint, also the Four Brothers label before Atlantic distribution and then the yellow label copy rather than the white label. 100% guaranteed original with all the correct matrix marks. F MELVIN DAVIS ITS NO NEWS KE KE 1007 VG+ 350 Sassy early Detroit mover from the great Melvin Davis has all the right ingredients to make it on the dancefloors of the R&B/popcorn/early soul nights. Possibly Davis’ first record in ’63, although his Jackpot single was also in that year. G TEE CEE HALL WE GO TOGETHER NOVA 101 VG+ 2000 Talk about obscure, this fine bongo-driven soulful dancer seems to be precisely NOWHERE, we can’t find any record of it on the internet at all. Possibly the only release on the label and coupled with an excellent ballad ‘How Sweet It Is’. H PAUL SPECIAL KIND OF WOMAN VOLT 4042 M- 600 THOMPSON Superb copy of a superb tune. A vinyl copy too, I hadn’t ever seen it on anything other than styrene until a couple of years ago – was convinced it was only West Coast on an issue. Recorded at Muscle Shoals this was Thompson’s only release (amazingly) and after its substantial failure he returned to his job with the Tennessee Valley Authority – a big shame. I DOUGLAS AIN’T THAT JUST LIKE A WOMAN GUYDEN 2082 VG 200 BANKS WD Around 20 years ago this was one of the biggest spins in the land as the earlier sounds took quite a foothold. It still sounds good today. This is a ‘fibreglass’ copy with a multitude of fine marks which scarcely sound in all fairness. Check the soundbite. J ROSEY JONES & ALL I NEED IS HALF A CHANCE WICKETT VG 500 THE SUPERIORS 61472 Yes, it’s the ‘Have Love Will Travel’ guy on his first release on the tiny Wickett label. First played, once more, by Richard S. and covered up as ‘Carlis Munro’. Said to be 1972 this tremendous Northern stomper sounds 5 years older than that date and has always been very rare. Condition is worn to say the least (see soundbite). Actually, the B-side came out as the other side of ‘Have Love Will Travel’ i.e., ‘Think About It Baby’. K CIX BITS BAND I CAN’T TURN MYSELF AROUND HAZE 0012 M- 300 Great piece of 1978 Modern Soul from a Los Angeles band who were totally unknown to the UK at the time even to the extent of having an album on this label (by Mr. Cix). L SUNDAY SWEET TEMPTATION GOOD LUCK VG++ 500 JORDON 1414 Very rare Chicago tiny label release from an unknown artist turns out to be an excellent crossover sound that will be new to every public turntable I would think. M THE INVITATIONS WATCH OUT LITTLE GIRL MGM 13666 D VG++ 300 One of the big spins around the nation before they put us all away for a year! It’s the ‘Skiing In The Snow’ group of course, but this one has turned out to be their most expensive bit of vinyl. A version of ‘You’re Like A Mystery’ on the flip offers the black perspective on The Belmonts biggie from ’78. N THE ICEMEN IT’S TIME YOU KNEW OLE-9 1008 VG++ 400 Rare blue vinyl copy of this New York stomper looks so good. One small box of these was found circa ’74, then every other copy found seemed to be on regular vinyl. A George Kerr production with arrangements from Richard Tee… on an Eddie Singleton song – make no wonder its such a great record. O PHIL TERRELL LOVE HAS PASSED ME BY CARNIVAL VG++ 200 523 Started the auction with a Joe Evans-related release so we will finish with same. Terrell was in the earliest vestige of Kool and The Gang named Kool and The Flames, later he was an occasional stand-in with The Manhattans who, in turn, backed him on his two Carnival 45s. In fact, he was supposed to join the group later but was overlooked when the group came across Gerald Alston. SECOND PAGE FOCUS PREVIOUSLY UNISSUED SPECIAL! 1 SANDRA AFTER YOU GIVE YOUR ALL KENT 6T’S 37TH M- 30 RICHARDSON ANNIVERSARY Superb unissued take on the Softouch 45 on Prodigal backed with the great Hytones sixties track ‘Runaway Girl’. 2 TOMMY HUNT THE PRETTY PART OF YOU HORACE’S 001 M- 30 Probably the best Northern side Tommy ever did – and Scepter left it in the can! 3 LITTLE ANN LEAN LANKY DADDY KENT SELECT 065 M- 35 Deleted and in-demand Detroit winner c/w ‘Just A Mistake’ by The Ebonettes. 4 THE ALL OF MY LIFE M-PAC! 2006 WD M- 10 RINGLEADERS Huge Stafford spin you would just love to hear as an ‘oldie’ today (it was acetate-only way back then). 5 ALVIN CASH & SWEATIN’ (DO WHAT YOU MAR-V-LUS 2004 M- 10 THE REGISTERS WANT TO) Vocal to the long-played instrumental (courtesy of Roger Banks and to be found on the flipside). 6 WALLIE HOSKINS & SWITCH AROUND BELTONE ST1005 M- 20 ROSEMARY McCOY Massive acetate-only 60s stomper, big for over ten years. M- 10 2003 Not quite as red-hot as ‘Go On And Laugh’ but still brilliant and as good as anything they did that was issued. 10 JOE MATTHEWS WE GOT A GOOD THING GOING THELMA 114 WD M- 20 Great unissued Thelma deemed to be ‘unofficial’ in some quarters. Actually, it was cleared by Don Davis. Nice lookalike promo.
