  • This Text Is a Radio Chat Interview Between Rugby Player Nick Cummins and Radio Presenters Will and Woody on Kiss FM’S ‘Will and Woody Drive Home Show’
This text is a radio chat interview between rugby player Nick Cummins and radio presenters Will and Woody on Kiss FM’s ‘Will and Woody Drive Home Show’. The interview takes place the night before the 2018 season premiere of The Bachelor, a reality television dating show in which Cummins will star. The spoken interview is highly informal, with Will and Woody asking Cummins questions about the show primarily to entertain the listeners of the show and Cummins’ fans, but also to share some of Cummins’ insider information before the season commences. The context surrounding the Australian interview is made clear through a variety of linguistic features. Firstly, the phrase “in the studio” (1, 10) is repeated, first by Will and then by Woody, which helps to reinforce the idea that Will, Woody and Cummins are all together at the KISS headquarters, giving further context behind the conversation for any new listeners so that they can better understand what’s happening. The question and answer format, seen by the hosts’ questions including “you said no?” (13) and Cummins’ responses in turn such as “yeah..shit yeah” (14) also increase the coherence by adhering to the expectations of the interview, so that the listeners can focus on enjoying the show. The television name “the Honey Badger” (1) and the stressed noun phrase “The Bachelor” (10), both referring to Cummins, emphasise his new role as star of the television show, reminding listeners both of the context to the interview but also showing that it is impressive for KISS to have such an important figure as a guest on their radio show.

18 Established 1961 Sports Wednesday, April 15, 2020 Baseball, soccer Photo of the Day seasons get underway in Taiwan TAIPEI: The baseball and soccer seasons got under- way behind closed doors in Taiwan at the weekend, providing rare live action for fans at home at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has shut down most professional sport around the globe. Taiwan has been comparatively successful in con- taining the spread of the virus, reporting to date 388 cases and six deaths in a population of around 24 mil- lion. Globally, more than 110,000 people have died from the virus. The Chinese Professional Baseball League’s much delayed start was pushed back by a further 24 hours after rain swept across the island, forcing the postponement of the traditional season-opener on Saturday. It therefore fell to Cuban lefthander Ariel Miranda, formerly of the Seattle Mariners, to throw the first pitch of the season for the Chinatrust Brothers against the Uni-President Lions at Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium on Sunday. Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen posted a picture on her Facebook page on Sunday of her watching the baseball match at home, accompanied by one of her cats, and calling on everyone else to join her and watch from home. “What’s more important is once the epidemic is over, we’ll see each other at the baseball pitch!” she wrote. No fans were allowed in the 20,000-seater sta- dium to watch the Lions win 4-1, with health concerns limiting attendees to a total of 200 players, coaches, umpires, cheerleaders and journalists, local media re- ported.

I RUPA 29 September 2017 Ms Jeanette Radcliffe Secretary Standing Committee on Community Affairs References Committee By Online Submission RE: INQUIRY INTO THE FUTURE OF RUGBY UNION IN AUSTRALIA Dear Ms Radcliffe Thank you for your letter of 11 September 2017 inviting a written submission from RUPA with respect to the Inquiry into the Future of Rugby Union in Australia by the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs References Committee. On behalf of its members, Australia's professional Rugby players, RUPA has in 2017 been particularly vocal in advocating for the retention of all five Australian Super Rugby teams as being in the best interests of Rugby in Australia. Throughout the Australian Rugby Union and SANZAAR's protracted process to reduce the number of Australian teams competing in the Super Rugby competition beyond 2017 from five to four, RUPA has been more prevalent in our media presence and commentary than has been our recent nature. We have expressed our organisational views and those of players' collectively in numerous media articles and interviews this year. Central to our publicly articulated positions has been eight statements which RUPA distributed publicly between February and September of this year which we provide for the purposes of the Inquiry. Each of those statements are attached and in summary their details are: Item , Date · 1: Title of Release · -, - ' I 1 16 February 2017 Players united in support of five Australian Super Rugby teams 2 30 March 201 7 RUPA launch "Stronger as Five" online petition 3 9 April 2017 RUPA responds to Super Rugby restructure 4 17 May 2017 RUPA supports VRU in calling for ARU General Meeting 5 21 June2017 RUPA response post General Meeting 6 5 July 2017 Battle only between the white lines 7 11 August 2017 RUPA response to ARU decision 8 5 September 2017 RUPA response to dismissal of Rugby WA appeal Please feel free to contact me should you wish to discuss the contents of this letter further.

  • Japan's Sunwolves Exit Super Rugby As Australia Bid Fails
18 Established 1961 Sports Tuesday, June 2, 2020 Photo of the day Hamilton slams F1 for silence over Floyd death LONDON: World champion Lewis Hamilton criticised the “biggest of stars” in “white-dominated” Formula One for failing to speak out against racism as protests erupted around the United States. The Mercedes driver warned “I know who you are and I see you” as he accused his fellow drivers of “staying silent” following the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, during his arrest in Minneapolis. The videotaped incident has triggered unrest in several cities and led to an outpouring of condemna- tion from top athletes including Michael Jordan and Serena Williams. “I see those of you who are staying silent, some of you the biggest of stars yet you stay silent in the midst of injustice,” Hamilton wrote on Instagram. “Not a sign from anybody in my industry which of course is a white-dominated sport. I’m one of the only people of colour there yet I stand alone. “I would have thought by now you would see why this happens and say something about it but you can’t stand alongside us. Just know I know who you are and I see you.” Hamilton, the six-time world champion, said he sup- ported only peaceful protesters, not those who have looted stores and set fire to buildings. But he added: “There can be no peace until our so- called leaders make change. This is not just America, this is the UK, this is Spain, this is Italy and all over.

  • Future of Rugby Union in Australia
Future of rugby union in Australia Submission to the Senate Community Affairs References Committee Submitted by: Dr David Masters 20 September, 2017 I present this submission as a passionate supporter of both rugby and of the recognition of the State of Western Australia as a partner within the Commonwealth of Australia. I am a foundation member of the Western Force and prepared background material for the Western Force during the development of the “Own the Force” initiative. At this time, I was also a member of a small group advising Force CEO Mark Sinderberry on ownership options. 1 Submission summary The basis to this submission is that the by closing the Western Force rugby team the ARU have: • Not acted in the best interests of Australian rugby; • Used a flawed analysis in their assessment of the need to reduce teams; • Been dishonest in attributing the reasons for their financial losses and; • Been disingenuous in their dealing with Western Force supporters, the media and the Australian public. These will be covered, where appropriate within the specified terms of reference. Key conclusions are substantiated within the main document and are summarised as follows: 1. There is no evidence that increasing the number of Australian Super Rugby teams from 3 to 4 and then to 5 has been the cause of Australia’s recent poor performance in Super Rugby. There is evidence that this decline is associated with the ARU decision to allow and even encourage Australian rugby players to join foreign teams. Continued loss of players to Europe with mean rugby will follow Australian hockey.
