This story is told in Through Gates of Splendor. On reading about Jim's school life and growing experiences, I was impressed with his dedication to personal holiness and spiritual discipline. Also, his desire to understand the Bible for himself through thorough study rather than relying on, and adopting the viewpoints of, other respected Christians. Elliot diligently and persistently studied the Word often adopting viewpoints that went completely against the grain at the time. He refused to get involved in leading a political group in school. He sought also to use every minute of his time wisely and only got himself involved in those things that would forward God's Kingdom in some aspect or another. Through reading his diaries it is clear that his dogmatic views changed over time but his heart was always to follow Scripture regardless the cost to his personal reputation. We can all learn from his example. Whether this was because he faced all kinds of difficulties; building swept away in typhoon weather, various deaths, potential colleagues marrying and remaining at home, or whether it was because God was expecting him to live more by faith as he matured spiritually, I don't know. His decision to go into Auca territory with the other men is an interesting one. I'm sure this has been debated endlessly. The author his wife was at first unsure and asked him whether he was Shadow of the Almighty: The Life and Testament of Jim Elliot that God led him into this decision. He confirmed that this was the case and then proceeded. Whether or not it was Shadow of the Almighty: The Life and Testament of Jim Elliot right decision, I'm sure that Elliot believed it was and God has obviously used his testimony and that of the others that died for many years after his death. Earthly things were of no consequence to Elliot and he spoke a lot about his frustrations in having to maneuver them. You will wonder then why I'm only giving this 3 stars. Whilst Elliot's life was interesting and his devotional life a challenge I found the style of the book hard going and much too detailed in places. Lengthy journal extracts and letters about flora and fauna, Elliot's personal spiritual experiences, details of his growing attachment to Elisabeth, may be exciting reading for his wife and family but I found it a struggle not to lose interest. For his life and dedication I would rate it 4 stars. This is clean; free Shadow of the Almighty: The Life and Testament of Jim Elliot bad language and sexual content. Jim Elliot's short, powerful life reminded me of what Christ's own life showed first: we are all born to die. It's up to us whether our lives simply peter out result of the Fall and all that or whether we find an altar, choose a cross, draw a line, pick an Alamo, raise a flag, and say, "Here. For this. For this I will give my life. I was delighted to find this audiobook available through my library, even more so because Elisabeth, with her steady, low, modulated voice, was the narrator. If he had lived to threescore and ten, would his tone have modulated, I wonder? The way he made decisions, the dichotomy he made between spiritual and secular, and his rejection of the ceremony and pageantry of weddings were other areas that made me squirm. I was cheering when he loosened up the last half of his senior year at college. The close-knit fabric of his family life as seen through his letters is lovely. I had forgotten that his dad was able to come to Ecuador to help him with some construction projects. What a precious gift that time was. I was raised in the shadow of Jim and Betty Elliot. My family were part of the Plymouth Brethren chapel Jim had attended whose complacency he complained about! Jim's uncle, a man who radiated enthusiasm and was ever so kind to me, was an elder; Jim's cousin currently employs several of my family members. I went to Bible college with Jim's niece. Philip James Elliot October 8, — January 8, was a Christian missionaryand was one of five killed during Operation Aucaan attempt to evangelize the Huaorani people of Ecuador. Fred was of Scottish heritage; his grandparents were the first of his family to settle in North America. Clara's parents moved near the turn of the 20th century from Switzerland to eastern Washington, where they operated a large ranch. They met in Portland, where Clara was studying to be a chiropractor and Fred, having devoted himself to Christian ministry, was working as a traveling preacher with the Plymouth Brethren movement. Elliot professed faith in Jesus at Shadow of the Almighty: The Life and Testament of Jim Elliot age of six and grew up in a home where obedience and honesty were enforced. In the summer ofwhile at Camp Wycliffe Cameron Townsend's linguistics training camp in OklahomaElliot practiced the skills necessary for writing down a language for the first time by working with a former missionary to the Quechua people. The missionary told him of the Huaorani — also called the "Auca", the Quichua word for "savage" — a group of Ecuadorian indigenous people considered violent and dangerous to outsiders. Elliot remained unsure about whether to go to Ecuador or India until July. His parents and friends wondered if he might instead be more effective in youth ministry in the United States, but considering the home church "well-fed", he felt that international missions should take precedence. After the completion of his linguistic studies, Elliot applied for a passport and began to make plans with his friend Bill Cathers to leave for Ecuador. However, two months later Cathers informed him that he planned to marry, making it impossible for him to accompany Elliot as they had planned. McCully married later that summer, forcing Elliot to look elsewhere for an unmarried man with whom he could begin working in Ecuador. That man turned out to be Pete Fleminga graduate of the University of Washington with a degree in philosophy. He corresponded frequently with Elliot, and by September he was convinced of his calling to Ecuador. In his journal he expressed hope that they would be able to be married, but at the same time felt that he was called to go to Ecuador without her. Elliot returned to Portland in November and began to prepare to leave the country. Elliot and Fleming arrived in Shadow of the Almighty: The Life and Testament of Jim Elliot on February 21,with the purpose of evangelizing Ecuador's Quechua Indians. They first stayed in Quitoand then moved to the jungle. They took up residence at the Shandia mission station. On October 8,he married fellow Wheaton alumna and missionary Elisabeth Howard. The wedding was a simple civil ceremony held in Quito. Ed and Marilou McCully were the witnesses. The couple then took a brief honeymoon to Panama and Costa Rica, then returned to Ecuador. Their only child, Valerie, was born February 27, While working with Quechua Indians, Elliot began preparing to reach the Huaorani. After several months, the men decided to build a base a short distance from the Indian village, along the Curaray River. There they were approached one time by a small group of Huaorani and even gave an airplane ride to one curious Huaorani whom they called "George" his real name was Naenkiwi. Encouraged by these friendly encounters, they began plans to visit the Huaorani, without knowing that Naenkiwi had lied to the others about the missionaries' intentions.
