The other parts in the series are: Southern Planetaries Southern Galaxies Two Southern Galaxy Groups These observing notes were made in early July while my family was staying at the Magellan Observatory (astronomical farmstead) for eight nights. The observatory is in the southern tablelands of New South Wales between Goulburn and Canberra (roughly 3.5 hrs from Sydney) and is hosted by Zane Hammond and his wife Fiona. Viewing the showpiece southern globulars was high on my observing priorities for Australia. Because the center of the Milky Way wheels overhead from -35° latitude, the globular system is much better placed and several of the best globulars in the sky which are completely inaccessible from the north are well placed. In the August issue of S&T, Les Dalrymple (who I observed with one evening), ranked M13 no better than 8th among the best globulars visible from Australia. I'd still jack up its ranking a couple of notches, but it's just one of the weak runnerups to 47 Tucana and Omega Centauri viewed over 75° up in the sky and behind NGC 6752, 6397 and M22. -

Corona-Australis is one of the nearest regions to the Sun with recent and ongoing star formation, but the current picture of its stellar (and substellar) content is not complete yet. Aims. We take advantage of the second data release of the Gaia space mission to revisit the stellar census and search for additional members of the young stellar association in Corona-Australis. Methods. We applied a probabilistic method to infer membership probabilities based on a multidimensional astrometric and photo- metric data set over a field of 128 deg2 around the dark clouds of the region. Results. We identify 313 high-probability candidate members to the Corona-Australis association, 262 of which had never been reported as members before. -

A Basic Requirement for Studying the Heavens Is Determining Where In
Abasic requirement for studying the heavens is determining where in the sky things are. To specify sky positions, astronomers have developed several coordinate systems. Each uses a coordinate grid projected on to the celestial sphere, in analogy to the geographic coordinate system used on the surface of the Earth. The coordinate systems differ only in their choice of the fundamental plane, which divides the sky into two equal hemispheres along a great circle (the fundamental plane of the geographic system is the Earth's equator) . Each coordinate system is named for its choice of fundamental plane. The equatorial coordinate system is probably the most widely used celestial coordinate system. It is also the one most closely related to the geographic coordinate system, because they use the same fun damental plane and the same poles. The projection of the Earth's equator onto the celestial sphere is called the celestial equator. Similarly, projecting the geographic poles on to the celest ial sphere defines the north and south celestial poles. However, there is an important difference between the equatorial and geographic coordinate systems: the geographic system is fixed to the Earth; it rotates as the Earth does . The equatorial system is fixed to the stars, so it appears to rotate across the sky with the stars, but of course it's really the Earth rotating under the fixed sky. The latitudinal (latitude-like) angle of the equatorial system is called declination (Dec for short) . It measures the angle of an object above or below the celestial equator. The longitud inal angle is called the right ascension (RA for short). -

Also today in 1958, NASA was established by an act of Congress. More? In 1962, the 300-foot radio telescope of the National Ra- dio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) went live at Green Bank, West Virginia. It held place as the world’s second largest radio scope until it collapsed in 1988. Tonight let’s visit with an old lunar favorite. Easily seen in binoculars, the hexagonal walled plain of Albategnius ap- pears near the terminator about one-third the way north of the south limb. Look north of Albategnius for even larger and more ancient Hipparchus giving an almost “figure 8” view in binoculars. Between Hipparchus and Albategnius to the east are mid-sized craters Halley and Hind. Note the curious ALBATEGNIUS AND HIPPARCHUS ON THE relationship between impact crater Klein on Albategnius’ southwestern wall and TERMINATOR CREDIT: ROGER WARNER that of crater Horrocks on the northeastern wall of Hipparchus. Now let’s power up and “crater hop”... Just northwest of Hipparchus’ wall are the beginnings of the Sinus Medii area. Look for the deep imprint of Seeliger - named for a Dutch astronomer. Due north of Hipparchus is Rhaeticus, and here’s where things really get interesting. If the terminator has progressed far enough, you might spot tiny Blagg and Bruce to its west, the rough location of the Surveyor 4 and Surveyor 6 landing area. -
Constellation Is the Corona Australis
CORONA AUSTRALIS, THE SOUTHERN CROWN Corona Australis is a constellation in the southern celestial hemisphere. Its Latin name means "southern crown", and it is the southern counterpart of Corona Borealis, the northern crown. One of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd-century astronomer Ptolemy, it remains one of the 88 modern constellations. The Ancient Greeks saw Corona Australis as a wreath rather than a crown and associated it with Sagittarius or Centaurus. Other cultures have likened the pattern to a turtle, ostrich nest, a tent, or even a hut belonging to a rock hyrax (a shrewmouse; a small, well-furred, rotund animals with short tails). Although fainter than its northern namesake, the oval - or horseshoe-shaped pattern of its brighter stars renders it distinctive. Alpha and Beta Coronae Australis are its two brightest stars with an apparent magnitude of around 4.1. Epsilon Coronae Australis is the brightest example of a W Ursae Majoris variable in the southern sky (an eclipsing contact binary). Lying alongside the Milky Way, Corona Australis contains one of the closest star-forming regions to our Solar System —a dusty dark nebula known as the Corona Australis Molecular Cloud, lying about 430 light years away. Within it are stars at the earliest stages of their lifespan. The variable stars R and TY Coronae Australis light up parts of the nebula, which varies in brightness accordingly. Corona Australis is bordered by Sagittarius to the north, Scorpius to the west, Telescopium to the south, and Ara to the southwest. The three-letter abbreviation for the constellation, as adopted by the International Astronomical Union in 1922, is 'CrA'. -

I grew up in Denmark in the 1950s, a time when Europe was healing the wounds after the ravages of the Second World War. Already at the age of 7 I had fallen in love with astronomy, but information was very hard to come by in those days, so I scraped together what I could, mainly relying on the local library. At some point I was introduced to the magazine Sky and Telescope, and soon invested my pocket money in a subscription. Every month I would sit at our dining room table with a dictionary and work my way through the latest issue. In one issue I read about Herbig-Haro objects, and I was completely mesmerized that these objects could be signposts of the formation of stars, and I dreamt about some day being able to contribute to this field of study. -

Some have lost almost everything in the flood, Some have lost a little, and some have lost nothing... Our hearts go out to all who have lost, and thanks to all who have reached out to help others. Due to the flooding, last month’s meeting, at LIGO, was cancelled. The September meeting will be on the 12th at the Observatory, which did not receive any water during the flood, thus BRAS suffered no loss of property. As part of our Outreach effort. If anyone you know has any telescope and/or equipment that was in water during the flood, let us know and we will try to help clean, adjust, etc. the equipment. On September 2nd (I am a little late with this message), Dr. Alan Stern, the New Horizons Primary Investigator, gave two talks at LSU. The morning talk was for Astronomy graduate students, and was a little technical. -
