Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parish Family,

On January 20th, our nation witnessed a peaceful transition of power as Biden became our 46th President of the United States. Elected as one who has authority over our nation, the readings today…prefigured in the old testament Book of Deuteronomy and the of Saint Mark, we as a people, as a nation, and as must rely on the ultimate authority that comes from in His Son, Jesus Christ.

Moses spoke to all the people, saying: “A like me will the Lord, your God, raise up for you from among your own kin; to him you shall listen…and I will put my words into his mouth; he shall tell them all that I command him.” In this promise to the people, God is assuring us that He will not abandon those who turn to Him in faith— He will give to the world a human person so that we can experience the gift of God’s voice in human flesh.

The Gospel of Saint Mark proclaims: “…on the sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue and taught. The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.” We must be careful to truly seek the voice of God in our lives. Jesus is the ultimate authority to whom we must rely upon and listen with hearts, eyes, and ears intently focused upon His every word.

The simple truth is, many in our world today do not like to be told what to do, how to do what we are told, and question ‘with what authority do others speak to us.’ The authority of the world we depend upon to live in a civilized society and nation. However, the Authority of God is different. God’s Authority recognized in the person of Jesus Christ leads us in faith to accept His Way—His path to holiness for you and for me. What we must do is, listen to the voice of God and then, respond in faith. In this posture of obedience to God, we will find ourselves not struggling for control—for in our baptism, all authority, all control belongs to God.

I conclude my message to you this week by joyfully announcing that our parish has paid in full, our capital campaign debt to Independent Bank. I thank all of you who generously responded to my Thanksgiving Appeal letter and gave to assist us in achieving this goal. My sincere thanks to all who covered this appeal in prayer and all who gave of their financial resources in faith. May God bless you, one and all!

Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. Wayne W. Wilkerson, Pastor

Because it echoes the Christmas festival, this day is a celebration of light in Cindy Khuu darkness. Its Gospel reading (Luke 2:22-40) tells of the old man Joseph and Ashley Mejia calling the infant Jesus a “light to the Gentiles and the glory Andrew Nguyen of your people .” For nine centuries, it has been traditional to bless candles on this day. You are invited to bring a KEEP IN TOUCH TO GET candle with you to 8:15 am Mass on February 2nd to be blessed and then to take home for your special prayer time. ALL THE LATEST NEWS!

Blessing of Throats: Wednesday, February 3 at 8:15 am Mass We celebrate the feast of Saint Blaise, who was bishop of Sebaste in Armenia in the fourth century. Before being martyred, he is said to have healed a boy who was choking. Since the eighth century, Saint Blaise has been venerated as the patron of those who suffer from diseases of the throat and from all other illnesses. The blessing of Saint Blaise is a sign of our faith in God’s protection and love for us and for the sick. Due to COVID-19 restrictions this year, rather than the throat of each person being touched, with blessed candles the will impart the blessing by extending his hands over the assembly while saying the prayer of blessing only once. You are invited to remain after 8:15 am Mass for this blessing.
