Boast Squash Commodore Squash Club Minneapolis Club MARCH 5-8, 2020 Boast Squash Commodore Squash Club Minneapolis Club MARCH 5-8, 2020 March, 2020 Dear Doubles Squash Enthusiasts, Welcome to the Commodore Squash Club. You must be “enthusiasts” venturing to the Twin Cities in March, for goodness sake, to bang a hard squash ball around a 25X45X26 foot court, roughly 30,000 cubic feet, with three other humans of various sizes and shapes, all wielding clubs. Glory awaits the victor, death the vanquished. “Dear Lord, I can explain tinning that drop shot costing us the National Title in 2020, if you are but prepared to listen.” Of more importance, at least for now, is what your partner might say. We who play this cruel sport know the value of a great partner; one who runs, shoots, clears, smiles, and has a kind word when push comes to shove. “Talk to your partner,” may well be the Lord’s response. Yes, your partner who saves you, who props you up, who deals with your silly weaknesses on and off the court, and with whom you drink from the same cup. My father built the Commodore Squash Club in 1976. I have owned it since 1995, having returned from New York City in 1993 where I spent two years teaching at PS46. The Club was struggling, and Dad had serious reservations about investing in the costly transition to softball courts. My brilliant suggestion to return to Minnesota as a Teaching Pro and reinvigorate the Club was met with shock and consternation. Fortunately, after due consideration, he agreed. We were a happy doubles team, which is saying something. As a child our relationship had ups and downs. Funny to ponder my ownership has now lasted twenty-five years, his for just nineteen. Then again he helped me till two weeks before his death in 2007, so I have another seven years to go to match his impressive record of showing up daily to nudge forward this miraculous club. Looking back, perhaps our biggest push involved my design, financing, and installation of the three International Courts in 1995, unavoidably at the expense of our spectacular 300 seat gallery. Miraculous? Well, yes. It is simply astonishing the Commodore Squash Club has managed to survive as a small business since 1976. We couldn’t have done it without the remarkable support of the world’s greatest membership. Also, Jeff Mulligan has done a great job as Head Pro coming aboard ship in 2011. Presently I am exploring ways to develop the property while transitioning to a member owned club. It’s a complicated process with many moving parts, so we will just have to see what the future holds. Looking about the Commodore Squash Club, you may notice quite a few treasures. There’s the plaque recognizing Hashim Khan inaugurating play in 1976. I love the poster of Sharif above my office door, which he signed every time he came through St. Paul. He and John Nimick were honored guests in 2010, and I remember laughing with Sharif over breakfast as he recalled Hashim asking Sharif “why he hit the ball so hard?” Big “Mo” Khan nearly ripped the mustache off of Sharif in a doubles match back in the late 70’s, and I can see Sharif’s glaring eyes to this day. It’s an honor to play with Mo’s son Sakhi in this tournament. My mother Alvina reminded me of Mo’s glee and huge smile hurrying up to a ball, then flicking the ball opposite his turn of head. No pressure, Sakhi. In my office, you will find an old Bancroft racket with Hashim’s grip molded to it, from when Hashim came through for a Khan Tribute in 2000. Jahangir, Talbot, Gordie, Nimick, Sharif…. what a line up tramped through the Commodore when the Hardball Tour was in full swing. We hosted the Laphan Grant in 1988, and the National Doubles in 1993. More recently the WSDA, WISPA, PSA, FDA, MSA, USSRA, USTC (am I forgetting letters?) have all visited the Commodore Squash Club. Jeff’s close friend and current doubles partner, Willie Hosey, has been here every year since Jeff took over squash operations. Now it is your turn to create memories. I sincerely wish you the best of times, and encourage you to explore our great Twin Cities. Enjoy a draft beer and snooker game at the Commodore Squash Club. Hopefully, your visit will linger in a friendly after glow for years to come, and not, Lord willing, in the fires of squash damnation through eternity! Respectfully, John O’Brien Owner of Commodore Squash Club SCHEDULE OF EVENTS *All clubs will have bottled water, beer, snacks, and other refreshments. WORLD SQUASH UPDATE Issue 83 November / December 2019 FOR ALL WSF REGIONAL & NATIONAL FEDERATIONS cc: WSF Regional Presidents, WSF Commission Members, Stakeholders, PSA members, SPINs, Media, Accredited Products and Companies CAPE TOWN HOSTS SUCCESSFUL AGM The World Squash Federation Annual General Meeting took place on 6 November in Cape Town, South Africa, hosted by Squash South Africa. The WSF Conference, which preceded the AGM, facilitated informal discussions and featured presentations to update the delegates on key initiatives - including the World Squash Officiating, a joint enterprise between the WSF and Professional Squash Association (PSA) to develop an online platform that will provide National Federations with the tools to develop refereeing in their country. The new initiative is scheduled to go live before the end of the year. Additionally James Sandwith, from BEBRAND, presented the findings of a strategic review commissioned by WSF, with the report now available for all member nations to appraise. The 49th Annual General Meeting, attended by representatives of 24 National Federations, saw delegates agree an amendment to the Articles of Association to reduce the risk of inappropriate leadership behavior and to ensure that delegates in attendance at an AGM have a formal connection with their National Federations. There were no changes to the standard Rules of Squash. However, the Rules of Squash 57 were updated, adding an extra ball rebound resilience at 33 degrees C that will help to ensure that the differential between blue and black balls - and their range of bounce - will be more uniform across the brands that are WSF-approved. The WSF Championship Regulations were updated with respect to player eligibility, the use of random draws and a new timeline and procedure for seeding juniors.

  • Michelle Martin, a High Achiever
Michelle Martin, a High Achiever At the height of a hot summer evening in Australia, squash legend Michelle Martin puts aside time from her hectic personal life - centred round her family and close friends - to field a stream of questions about the highlights of her stellar squash career. She is unassuming but has certainly earned her place in the squash Hall of Fame, with her titles, including three Women’s World Open titles, six British Open crowns, and an Order of Australia amongst other accolades. Michelle Martin created history when she became the first female squash player to win gold medals at the inaugural squash event in the Commonwealth Games in 1998 in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. Martin is liberal in her humility, but it is sprinkled with a dry humour that sets the mood for an enlivening conversation. The Martin Family of Squashers…. The Martin family is unique as the only Australian squash playing family to produce three such acclaimed and highly internationally ranked siblings. Michelle’s parents constructed the five court Engadin Squash Centre, in Sydney which was attached to the family’s house. Having a court at home meant that the children had the opportunity to learn the sport, meet fellow squashers and practice at virtually any time of the day or night - and the children took full advantage of this. This centre would serve as the hub of activity for the Martin youngsters….. four boys and two girls, and they and their parents who would spend countless hours on or around the court. The children were not coerced into playing the game and were free to participate in other sporting activities at school.

Annals of Finance: The Blow-Up Artist: Reporting & Essays: The New ... http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2007/10/15/071015fa_fact_cassid... ANNALS OF FINANCE THE BLOW-UP ARTIST Can Victor Niederhoffer survive another market crisis? by John Cassidy OCTOBER 15, 2007 n a wall Niederhoffer’s approach is eclectic. His funds, a friend says, appeal “to people like him: self-made people who have a maverick streak.” O opposite Victor Niederhoffer’s desk is a large painting of the Essex, a Nantucket whaling ship that sank in the South Pacific in 1820, after being attacked by a giant sperm whale, and that later served as the inspiration for “Moby-Dick.” The Essex’s captain, George Pollard, Jr., survived, and persuaded his financial backers to give him another ship, but he sailed it for little more than a year before it foundered on a coral reef. Pollard was ruined, and he ended his days as a night watchman. The painting, which Niederhoffer, a sixty-three-year-old hedge-fund manager, acquired after losing all his clients’ money—and a good deal of his own—in the Thai stock market crash of 1997, serves as an admonition against the incaution to which he, a notorious risktaker, is prone, and as a reminder of the precariousness of his success. Niederhoffer has been a professional investor for nearly three decades, during which he has made and lost several fortunes—typically by relying on methods that other traders consider reckless or unorthodox or both. In the nineteen-seventies, he wrote one of the first software programs to identify profitable trades.

  • Squash Program
Youth Squash Program What is Squash? According to an article published in Men’s Fitness Magazine: You'll need a racquet, an opponent, a ball, and an enclosed court—most colleges and large gyms have them. Alternate hitting the ball off the front wall until someone loses the point. This happens when you allow the ball to bounce twice, or when you whack it out of bounds—below the 19-inch strip of metal (the "tin") along the bottom of the front wall, or above the red line around the top of the court. First one to 11 points wins the game; best of three or five wins the match. It may sound simple, but Squash is a challenging and rewarding game. And no one in South Jersey does it better than Greate Bay Racquet and Fitness. Why should you choose Greate Bay Racquet and Fitness Squash program? Greate Bay Racquet and Fitness is South Jersey's premiere racquet sports facility. • History of the Victorian Amateur/Open Squash Championships
HISTORY OF THE VICTORIAN AMATEUR/OPEN SQUASH CHAMPIONSHIPS AUTHOR/RESEARCHER: PAUL VEAR INTRODUCTION Victoria and Australia’s first squash courts were built at the Melbourne Club, located at 36 Collins Street, Melbourne in 1913, when their existing racquets court was divided to create two squash courts. Victoria’s first commercial court was built in the Bjelke Petersen Physical Culture Centre( the base for Gordon Watson) at 360 Lt. Collins St, in1926, and St. Kilda( the base for Betty Meagher and Val Watts), was the first public centre( 3 courts), built in Canterbury Rd, around 1930. As of 2014, the oldest existing court, built in 1935, is at the Sandringham Club, where Geoff Hunt learnt his trade. From its beginnings in Victoria, the game remained predominantly in men’s clubs with one to two courts until the early sixties. In 1934 the Australian Squash Rackets Association (ASRA) was formed, based in Victoria, with its Victorian equivalent, the Squash Rackets Association of Victoria (SRAV), commencing in 1937. On 24th June 1936 the inaugural weekly Men’s interclub pennant competition commenced with teams from six clubs competing. The Women’s equivalent started in 1947 comprising four teams. During 1952 the Australian Women’s Squash Rackets Association (AWSRA), and the Victorian Women’s Squash Rackets Association (VWSRA), were formed. In 1963 the Albert Park Squash Centre opened, becoming the headquarters for the sport and the SRAV; 13 years later under the guiding forces of Sid Myers and Trish Hackett(nee Hunt), the Women’ Association amalgamated with the SRAV to form the Victorian Squash Rackets Association(VSRA), with its inaugural meeting being held in November 1976.
