Boast Squash Commodore Squash Club Minneapolis Club MARCH 5-8, 2020 March, 2020 Dear Doubles Squash Enthusiasts, Welcome to the Commodore Squash Club. You must be “enthusiasts” venturing to the Twin Cities in March, for goodness sake, to bang a hard squash ball around a 25X45X26 foot court, roughly 30,000 cubic feet, with three other humans of various sizes and shapes, all wielding clubs. Glory awaits the victor, death the vanquished. “Dear Lord, I can explain tinning that drop shot costing us the National Title in 2020, if you are but prepared to listen.” Of more importance, at least for now, is what your partner might say. We who play this cruel sport know the value of a great partner; one who runs, shoots, clears, smiles, and has a kind word when push comes to shove. “Talk to your partner,” may well be the Lord’s response. Yes, your partner who saves you, who props you up, who deals with your silly weaknesses on and off the court, and with whom you drink from the same cup. My father built the Commodore Squash Club in 1976. I have owned it since 1995, having returned from New York City in 1993 where I spent two years teaching at PS46. The Club was struggling, and Dad had serious reservations about investing in the costly transition to softball courts. My brilliant suggestion to return to Minnesota as a Teaching Pro and reinvigorate the Club was met with shock and consternation. Fortunately, after due consideration, he agreed. We were a happy doubles team, which is saying something. As a child our relationship had ups and downs. Funny to ponder my ownership has now lasted twenty-five years, his for just nineteen. Then again he helped me till two weeks before his death in 2007, so I have another seven years to go to match his impressive record of showing up daily to nudge forward this miraculous club. Looking back, perhaps our biggest push involved my design, financing, and installation of the three International Courts in 1995, unavoidably at the expense of our spectacular 300 seat gallery. Miraculous? Well, yes. It is simply astonishing the Commodore Squash Club has managed to survive as a small business since 1976. We couldn’t have done it without the remarkable support of the world’s greatest membership. Also, Jeff Mulligan has done a great job as Head Pro coming aboard ship in 2011. Presently I am exploring ways to develop the property while transitioning to a member owned club. It’s a complicated process with many moving parts, so we will just have to see what the future holds. Looking about the Commodore Squash Club, you may notice quite a few treasures. There’s the plaque recognizing Hashim Khan inaugurating play in 1976. I love the poster of Sharif above my office door, which he signed every time he came through St. Paul. He and John Nimick were honored guests in 2010, and I remember laughing with Sharif over breakfast as he recalled Hashim asking Sharif “why he hit the ball so hard?” Big “Mo” Khan nearly ripped the mustache off of Sharif in a doubles match back in the late 70’s, and I can see Sharif’s glaring eyes to this day. It’s an honor to play with Mo’s son Sakhi in this tournament. My mother Alvina reminded me of Mo’s glee and huge smile hurrying up to a ball, then flicking the ball opposite his turn of head. No pressure, Sakhi. In my office, you will find an old Bancroft racket with Hashim’s grip molded to it, from when Hashim came through for a Khan Tribute in 2000. Jahangir, Talbot, Gordie, Nimick, Sharif…. what a line up tramped through the Commodore when the Hardball Tour was in full swing. We hosted the Laphan Grant in 1988, and the National Doubles in 1993. More recently the WSDA, WISPA, PSA, FDA, MSA, USSRA, USTC (am I forgetting letters?) have all visited the Commodore Squash Club. Jeff’s close friend and current doubles partner, Willie Hosey, has been here every year since Jeff took over squash operations. Now it is your turn to create memories. I sincerely wish you the best of times, and encourage you to explore our great Twin Cities. Enjoy a draft beer and snooker game at the Commodore Squash Club. Hopefully, your visit will linger in a friendly after glow for years to come, and not, Lord willing, in the fires of squash damnation through eternity! Respectfully, John O’Brien Owner of Commodore Squash Club SCHEDULE OF EVENTS *All clubs will have bottled water, beer, snacks, and other refreshments.
