Most specimens are partially disarticulated or isolated plates, which prevent identification to genus and species, but regardless these remains indicate a rich diversity of Mississippian crinoids in Poland during the Mississippian, especially during the late Viséan. Lanecrinus? sp. is described from the late Tournaisian of the D¦bnik Anticline region. A high crinoid biodiversity occurred during late Viséan of the Holy Cross Mountains, including the camerate crinoids Gilbertsocrinus? sp., Platycrinitidae Indeterminate; one flexible crinoid; and numerous eucladid crinoids, including Cyathocrinites mammillaris (Phillips), three taxa represented by partial cups left in open nomenclature, and numerous additional taxa known only from isolated radial plates, brachial plates, and columnals. -

Palaeoecology and taphonomy of a fossil sea floor, in the Carboniferous Limestone of northern England Stephen K. Donovan Abstract: Death assemblages preserved on bedding planes - fossil ‘sea floors’ - are important palaeontological sampling points. A fossil sea floor from Salthill Quarry (Mississippian), Clitheroe, Lancashire, preserves a mixture of crinoid debris with rarer tabulate corals and has yielded a rich diversity of palaeoecological information. Identifiable crinoids includeGilbertsocrinus sp. and a platycrinitid, associated with columnals/ pluricolumnals, brachials/arms and a basal circlet, crinoid-infesting tabulate corals such as Cladochonus sp. and Emmonsia parasitica (Phillips), and the spoor of a pit-forming organism. Long pluricolumnals showing sub-parallel orientations suggest a current azimuth; one coral is silicified with the mineral beekite. Abstract: The fossil crinoids and associated fauna from the Carboniferous (Mississippian–Pennsylvanian) of Mexico (Sonora, Tamaulipas, Hidalgo, Puebla, Guerrero, Oaxaca and Chiapas States) are described. Data are based on a combination of field and published sources, including seven previously studied localities from the central and southern areas, and four new localities from the northwestern part of the country. A total of 28 morphospecies are reported, seven from the Mississippian and 21 from the Pennsylvanian. Eleven are recorded for the first time in Mexico. These crinoid columnal morphospecies have been reported from the United States of America (Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado and Texas), and there are doubtful reports from Poland, and several Eurasian provinces (Western Siberia, Southern Kazakhstan, Pribalkhash and the Czech Republic). -

Those who did reply were strongly in favor of the venture, and this was a source of encouragement. We realize that several specialists who have not as yet replied to the questionnaire may have forgotten to do so and we would like to urge that they reply as soon as possible, so that information on their current pro- jects and publications can be included in Newsletter No.3. We regret the delay in producing this issue, and fondly hope that No. 3 will not have such a difficult birth as did No.2. Future issues of the Newsletter will probably be organized in a similar way to this one, but we hope to add a new section with the title "Research Notes" in which short paragraphs contributed by you can be included. AMERICAN MUSEUM NOVITATES Published by Number 204 THE AMzRICAN MUsEUM OF NATURAL HIsTORY Dec. 24, 1925 New York City 56.39,1(77.2) THE CRINOID OCCURRENCE AT CRAWFORDSVILLE, INDIANA BY KURT EHRENBETtG' The Department of Geology and Invertebrate Palaeontology of The American Museum of Natural History possesses a great slab measuring 30X42 inches (Fig. 1) and some smaller ones, from the well-known crinoid locality at Crawfordsville, Indiana.2 These slabs show a great number of specimens and species mingled together but preserved in an excellent manner. As is to be seen from the photographs (Figs. 1 and 2), the crinoids do not lie in a single plane, but some lie higher, some deeper, the latter, by careful preparation, being exposed by cutting off the rock almost vertically. At least four or five layers are distinguishable. A more careful examination shows that all parts of crinoid skeletons are preserved, such as arms, calices, stems, and roots. Crowns and stems are found in abundance, but roots are rare. Concerning the orientation of the crinoids on the slabs, there is no special direction at all. Sometimes it seems that the majority of crowns in one layer have the distal ends in a certain direction, whereas in another layer they lie in a different direction. But it is almost impossible to determine this exactly. This is due to the fact that it is difficult to determine to what layer a specimen belongs. As stated above, the crinoids belong to many different species. On the larger slab we find the following species3: Barycrinus lyoni Hall. -

Isolation & Characterization of Organic Molecules from Mississippian-age Crinoids Honors Research Thesis Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation with honors research distinction in Geological Sciences in the undergraduate colleges of The Ohio State University by Victor J. Perez The Ohio State University April 2013 Project Advisors: Drs. William Ausich & Yu-Ping Chin i Abstract In examples of exceptional preservation, fossil crinoids (phylum Echinodermata) from the same locality display species-specific color preservation. These colors are produced by light absorbing chromophores in organic molecules and have been recognized as polyaromatic hydrocarbons. Ultraviolet visible (UV-Vis) light spectroscopy and Orbitrap electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) were used in this study to further elucidate the identity of these organic molecules, while also assessing the feasibility of utilizing these molecules as biomarkers to track phylogeny. Organic molecules extracted from fossil material were compared to extracts from modern echinoderm analogues in order to determine the most plausible identities. Results indicated that the organic molecules preserved in Paleozoic crinoids are distinct from those identified in Mesozoic crinoids. These differences may be attributed to biological differences between the different crinoid taxa, but most likely are associated with the different geologic settings that the crinoids were deposited in. ii Acknowledgements I must first recognize my advisors, Drs. MORPHOLOGY OF CARBONIFEROUS AND PERMIAN CRINOIDS Abstruct-To allow further investigation of morphological diversification in Paleozoic crinoids, this paper supplements discrete-character data on Ordovician-Devonian crinoids and presents data for Carboniferous and Permian species. In addition to 75 characters used previously, three new characters are incorporated into the data. Analysis complements previous work in suggesting that most of the spectrum of crinoid form was attained early. Morphological diversity did not continue to increase through most of the Paleozoic, even in the face of several phases of taxonomic diversification. This result further supports previous arguments for the importance of basic morphological constraints in crinoid evolution. Shifts in the distribution of morphology largely corresponded with the waning or diversification of particular higher taxa. -

Crinoid assemblages in the Polish Givetian and Frasnian EDWARD GLUCHOWSKI Gluchowski, E. 1993. Crinoid assemblages in the Polish Givetian and Frasnian. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 38, 1/2, 35-92. Givetian and Frasnian crinoid faunas of the Holy Cross Mts and Silesia-Cracow Region are arranged in fourteen assemblages. Their diversity decreases generally from northern to southern regions reflecting crinoid habitat differentiation during either platform or reef phases of facies development. Distributional patterns are superimposed on a six-step general succession of the faunas which was mainly controlled by environmental changes related to eustatic cycles. Nine crinoid species have been identified by calyces, thirteen species are based on stems attributed to calyx genera, and forty-eight kinds of colurnnals, probably repre- senting distinct species, are classified within artificial supraspecific units. Of them thirteen are new: Anthinocrinus brevicostatus sp. n., Asperocrinus brevispinosus sp. n., Calleocrinus bicostatus sp. n., Calleocrinus kielcensis sp. n., Exaesiodiscus cornpositus sp. n., Kasachstanocrinus tenuis sp. n., Laudonornphalus pinguicosta- tus sp. n., Noctuicrinus? varius sp. n., Ricebocrinus parvus sp. n., Schyschcatocri- nus delicatus sp, n., Schyschcatocrinus rn~sltiformissp. n., Stenocrinus raricostatus sp. n., and Urushicrinus perbellus sp. n. Introduction Givetian and Frasnian crinoid remains from southern Poland, despite their wide distribution and frequent rock-building significance, have not been a subject of comprehensive studies until now. Scarce data on crinoid occurrences in the Holy Cross Mountains are dispersed in older works (Zeuschner 1869; Gurich 1896; Sobolev 1909) where representatives of four genera [Cupressocrinites, Haplocrinites, Hexacrinites, and Rhipidocri- nus) were reported.
