  • Virgil Lewis, 2013 Hall of Fame Inductee, Coach and Administrator
Virgil Lewis, 2013 Hall of Fame Inductee, Coach and Administrator For more than three decades, Virgil Lewis has been a very influential part of the growth of youth soccer in the United States as both a coach and administrator. Many of those close to Lewis will say that his endless pursuit to promote the game is motivated by his immense love of soccer and all it offers. In the 1980s, Lewis served for four years as the President of the New Mexico Youth Soccer Association and acted as the Chair of the US Youth Soccer ODP Boys Committee for two years. In addition to his administrative work, Lewis also became an A-Licensed coach — helping his Thunderbird Soccer Club and Legend teams to a number of New Mexico State Cup titles. Lewis also acted as a head of delegation, team manager and trainer for the U.S. team led by Bob Bradley that traveled to France in the late 1980s. Lewis continued to coach club soccer and once again acted as the head of delegation for another international trip in 1992-93 with the U.S. Under-17 National Team — helping lead the team to the tournament title in France. He later received the honor of acting as the head of delegation for a third time, again with an Under-17 National Team. The squad included players such as Bobby Convey, Landon Donovan and Damarcus Beasley. From 1996-2000, Virgil led the association as President of US Youth Soccer, where he continued to help the organization grow. During his tenure as President, US Youth Soccer acquired sponsorships with major corporations like Tide, Nokia, Chevrolet and adidas.

  • Reflections on the World Cup JAIME RAMIREZ
Reflections on the World Cup JAIME RAMIREZ In 2018 the World Cup will be held in Russia and the buzz around the world is one of ecstasy, particularly for young countries that qualified for the first time, like Iceland and Panama. With World Cup fixtures, the Netherlands and the United States, failing to qualify for the final stage, there is talk of major change in both federations. The United States, in particular, had been mak- ing important strides in recent Cups, making it to the second round routinely. This setback will undoubtedly make U.S. Soccer come to terms with the real- ity that major changes need to be made in order for the team to return to the world stage, especially as the U.S. has submitted a joint bid (with Mexico and Canada) to host the 2026 World Cup. Recently, I heard a network announcer ask his colleagues, “Do you remem- ber the first World Cup that you saw?” It was interesting to hear recollections on what is generally recognized as the greatest sporting event on earth. Here are my own earliest recollections, and how they have shaped my life. The first World Cup that I watched was the 1966 event hosted by England (the last one televised in black and white). The Cup introduced me to “El Rey” Pele (Edson Arantes do Nascimento) from Brazil, the “Black Panther of Mo- zambique,” Eusebio from Portugal, and the Charlton brothers, Jackie and Bob- by, from the eventual winner England. I remember sitting on the living room floor of our house in Mexicali and hearing the announcer continually mention the name “Charlton.” As days went by and England advanced, it dawned on me that there were two Charltons, Bobby and Jackie—gradually, I was able to distinguish between the brothers.

  • Liga MX: Should Landon Donovan Have Come out of Retirement to Play for Club León?
Liga MX: Should Landon Donovan Have Come Out of Retirement to play for Club León? Author : Dean Perretta Landon Donovan's second comeback has been marred by an unforgettable experience with Mexican Liga MX side Club León. In a meaningless game contested between two underperforming clubs already out of reach of the Playoffs, Club León defeated Guadalajara 2-0 on April 28. Landon Donovan was introduced into the game for Club León in the final 15 minutes of the contest against Guadalajara (Donovan has played 112 minutes collectively this season after six games). Club León are believed to be paying Landon Donovan an estimated $185,000 per month ($46,250 a week). Since his high-profile arrival to Liga MX, Donovan has played six games and started just once this season for Club León. Undisputedly, Landon Donovan's biggest highlight for Club León was being at the forefront of a heated brawl with Chivas player, Isaac Brizuela. After just six games with the seven time Liga MX champions, Landon Donovan arrived at Club León in 1 / 4 January 2018 with much fan fare and expectations to improve a side which finished seventh place in the Liga MX last season. The former Los Angeles Galaxy and United States Men's National Team star, who is a California native, has in effect executed a futile comeback attempt. If Donovan's first comeback with the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2016 was sincere and sentimental to assist the betterment of the Galaxy, Donovan's second comeback with Club León has been underscored by temptation and adventure, particularly given Donovan's so-so contributions since his arrival in Mexico.
