SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES The San Jose Earthquakes put an end to their winless run in impressive fashion, defeating Seattle Sounders FC 2-0 at CenturyLink Field on Saturday afternoon. The Quakes are in seventh place in the Western Conference with 22 points from 15 matches. LAST MATCH The Quakes took the lead in the 28th minute. As the ball moved from left to right along the top of the Sounders FC penalty area. Sanna Nyassi roamed forward to control a Matias Perez Garcia pass along the right channel. Nyassi took one touch into the box before rifling his attempt just past the outstretched arm of a diving Stefan Frei and into the top left corner of the goal. The lead was doubled in the 73rd minute after Perez Garcia danced his way through three Seattle defenders in the center of the park before placing his left-footed finish past Frei and into the upper corner. Quakes head coach Dominic Kinnear made two changes to the team that reached a scoreless draw with FC Dallas at Avaya Stadium. Sanna Nyassi and Adam Jahn came into the team in place of Cordell Cato and the suspended Mark Sherrod. SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-4-2): David Bingham - Marvell Wynne (Cordell Cato 46), Victor Bernardez, Clarence Goodson, Jordan Stewart - Sanna Nyassi, Matias Perez Garcia (Tommy Thompson 78), Fatai Alashe, Shea Salinas (Shaun Francis 90) - Chris Wondolowski, Adam Jahn.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
TEAM NEWS The Quakes snapped a three-game winless run in league play with the victory in Seattle, their first MLS victory since May 16. “It was a good week for us with the Open Cup win and then to come in here and get the full three points,” said Earthquakes head coach Dominic Kinnear. “If you looked at the standings before the game, we were kind of on the outside looking in, so for us to get this win will help us catch up to some teams.” Matias Perez Garcia scored his first MLS goal and added an assist in the Sounders FC win. He has three assists over the last five games, and has been involved in four of the Quakes’ last six goals, dating back to May 16. “I maneuvered around one guy, I got into the box – I knew they couldn't touch me – so I put it on my good foot and I was able to finish it,” Perez Garcia said. “Of course I'm happy that I got that goal. I knew if I stayed calm, that the goal would come, and thankfully today it came. We won the game and I got to score a goal – it was a great day for us. We're excited, we'll move forward and hopefully that can continue.” Cordell Cato came off the substitutes’ bench for a third time in the last four matches and contributed his first assist of the season, his first in league play since last Aug. 20 – when he also had an assist vs. Sounders FC. “Matias' goal was beautiful,” said Kinnear. “Good clearance by Clarence [Goodson], and then Cordell maybe gets lost in the shuffle there, but I thought his run to get up the field and get us some territory was really important. And then obviously Matias in close spaces was fantastic.” Chris Wondolowski started in a forward role as part of a strike pair with Adam Jahn, his first start as a striker since March 28. Sanna Nyassi scored his second goal of the season, his first since April 11 when he netted vs. Vancouver. It’s the first time he’s scored more than one goal in a league campaign since 2012, when he scored six goals for the Montréal Impact. “It feels great to score against your former club. It was a great buildup on the goal,” Nyassi said. “… It was important for us to score the first goal. There was a lot of pressure on us right before that, but we stayed compact defensively. When we scored that goal, it changed everything. We have a lot of respect for Seattle and we matched their intensity and hit them well on the counter. [It] was an important win for us.” Marvell Wynne reached a milestone with the 250th league appearance of his 10-year MLS career. “To get to that number as quick as he has, health has got to be in his favor,” Kinnear said. “He’s been healthy, had no injuries that have kept him out a long time. And he deserves to be in the starting lineup. For whatever team he’s at, everyone’s thought the same thing: that he should be playing for them. You take those and put years behind it, that’s the reason he’s at 250 at the age of 29.”
LA GALAXY The LA Galaxy exploded in a goalfest for a second consecutive match, again hitting for five goals, this time in a 5-0 win against the Portland Timbers on Wednesday evening at StubHub Center. The Galaxy are in third place in the Western Conference with 28 points from 19 matches. LAST MATCH The Galaxy were ahead after just the 13th minute, when Sebastian Lletget slotted home from the center of the box after running onto a deflected pass from Dan Gargan from the right side of the box. It was 2-0 just five minutes later, after Maximiliano Urruti brought down Lletget as he streaked into the box and referee Ted Unkel pointed to the spot. Robbie Keane converted the penalty with aplomb. The count was up to 3-0 in the 33rd minute when Keane filtered a superb pass into the left side of the area, and Robbie Rogers curled home a side-foot shot inside the far post behind the Timbers backline. Juninho scored in the 72nd minute, first picking off a poor touch in the Timbers, quickly feeding Keane above the box, then sprinting into the box for the return pass before poking it under Timbers goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey. Portland then went down to 10 men when defender Liam Ridgewell was sent off in the 78th minute after kicking out at Alan Gordon. The final tally came two minutes from the end, when Jose Villarreal took a free kick about 26 yards out on the left, curling the ball around the Timbers wall and inside the near post. Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena made one change to the team that rolled to a 5-1 win against Philadelphia Union at StubHub Center. Sebastian Lletget came back into the team in place of Mika Vayrynen. LA GALAXY (4-4-2): Jaime Penedo - Dan Gargan, Omar Gonzalez, A.J. DeLaGarza, Robbie Rogers - Stefan Ishizaki, Juninho (Kenney Walker 76), Sebastian Lletget (Alan Gordon 66), Baggio Husidic - Gyasi Zardes (Jose Villarreal 83), Robbie Keane. TEAM NEWS The Galaxy scored five goals for a second consecutive league game – and have hit for 16 goals in their last three games in all competitions, after defeating amateur side PSA Elite 6-1 in their U.S. Open Cup fourth-round match.
