Analysis of Patent Trial and Appeal Board petitions using the Docket Navigator database reveals the top petitioners, patent owners and law firms during 2014

ast year was by far the record year for filings at the PTAB. The Docket Navigator database lists 1,677 inter partes review, covered business method review and post-grant review petitions between January 1 2014 and December 31 2014. Managing IP used Docket Navigator to conduct an analysis of PTAB Lpetitions filed in 2014 to reveal the most-active companies and law firms at the PTAB.

The top PTAB law firms

We assessed the most-active law firms representing petition - ers and patent owners in PTAB proceedings. It should be noted that there is a lag sometimes for all of the law firms to appear so the numbers may be slightly underestimated. For patent owner law firms, especially, it can take a while for the law firm to appear in the Docket Navigator database because they do not appear on the initial petition filed by a challenger.

Fish & Richardson was involved in the most PTAB petitions filed in 2014 on behalf of petitioners, with 94. It was followed by Sidley Austin, with 82, WilmerHale with 73, Oblon, with 72, and Finnegan, with 68.

Two specialist law offices represented patent owners the most. The Fallchurch, Virginia-based Law Offices of Dr. Gregory J. Gonsalves represented the patent owner on 140 proceedings, followed by Menlo Park, California-based Chao Hadidi Stark & Barker, with 125.

Rounding out the top five law firms for patent owners are Sterne Kessler, with 88, Fish & Richardson, with 60, and Intellectual SPECIAL REPRINT FOR Ventures (which is listed in the Docket Navigator database rep - resenting itself) and McAndrews Held & Malloy both with 55.
