Nurses may be differentiated from other health care providers by their approach to patient care, training, and scope of practice. Nurses practice in a wide diversity of practice areas with a different scope of practice and level of prescriber authority in each. Many nurses provide care within the ordering scope of physicians, and this traditional role has come to shape the historic public image of nurses as care providers. However, nurses are permitted by most jurisdictions to practice independently in a variety of settings depending on training level. In the postwar period, nurse education has undergone a process of diversification towards advanced and specialized credentials, and many of the traditional regulations and provider roles are changing. Nurses develop a plan of care, working collaboratively with physicians, therapists, the patient, the patient's family and other team members, that focuses on treating illness to improve quality of life. In the U.S. (and increasingly the United Kingdom), advanced practice nurses, such as clinical nurse specialists and nurse practitioners, diagnose health problems and prescribe medications and other therapies, depending on individual state regulations. -

Course Objectives: Through lectures, readings and films, this course examines the lives of men and women who have been instrumental in the development of Canada since Confederation. Examples are drawn from politics, the military, diplomacy, and social reform. Learning Objectives: The student will be introduced to several individuals and themes in Canadian history since Confederation (1867), in hopes that this will dispel the myth that Canadian history is dull. Legislative Assembly Province of Alberta No. 40 VOTES AND PROCEEDINGS Third Session Twenty-Sixth Legislature Wednesday, June 6, 2007 The Speaker took the Chair at 1:00 p.m. Speaker’s Statement - Roberta MacAdams In 1916 in this Assembly, an Act called the Alberta Equal Suffrage Act was passed. That Act did two things. One, it provided for the first time the opportunity for women to vote. As well, it also offered an opportunity for women to run for political office. In 1917 a second Act was passed called the Alberta Military Representation Act. Remember, Canada was at war in 1917. That particular Military Representation Act indicated and said that in the next provincial election in Alberta, two seats would be available for men or women of military background in this Assembly. The provincial election was held on June 7, 1917. The first woman in the history of the British Empire, one of the first women anywhere in the world, Louise McKinney, was elected as an independent in the constituency of Claresholm. At the same time servicemen and servicewomen had the right to elect two Members of this Assembly. They were all located, of course, in northern France in the trenches. A lieutenant nurse by the name of Roberta MacAdams was in London, England, in the summer of 1917, and she visited a photographer who took a picture of her. The picture to my right, your left, is a painted portrait of the original picture. She then had a campaign poster printed with a very interesting slogan. Twenty-one people contested this election in the trenches in northern France for these two seats in Alberta. -

The declaration of war seemed an inevitability, and Canadians were waiting for it. Matron Georgina Pope of Tthe Canadian Army Medical Corps, who was garrisoned in Halifax, was one Canadian who was particularly anticipating the call to war. Many thoughts might have been going through her mind as she read the news despatches. She might well have won- dered if she would get the call to lead the Canadian Nursing Contingent overseas as she had done in 1899 and 1902, when she led the Canadian nursing contingents to the Boer War. She had seniority and experience on her side. For the past six years she had been the matron of the Army Medical Corps; she was in fact its first member and, as such, the most senior nursing officer in the Corps. She knew that based on her seniority and her previous nursing command she was the logical nursing sister to lead the nursing contingent to war. -

The Persons Case (1929)
CELEBRATING WOMEN THE PERSONS CASE (1929) OVERVIEW The Persons Case (Edwards v. A.G. of Canada) in 1929 was the constitutional ruling that allowed women to be appointed to the Senate. In doing so, the Persons case also overruled the 1928 Supreme Court finding that women were not persons according to the British North America Act. In turn, this ruling which officially recognized women as “persons” meant that women could no longer be denied any other rights based on narrow understanding and constructions of the law. WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS WHAT WAS THE NATURE OF THE FIGHT FOR ACHIEVEMENT? THIS ACHIEVEMENT?
