Crocodilians Glossary Bibliography Biographical Sketches Summary The Cerrado biome (savannah ecoregion) occupies 25% of the Brazilian territory (2.000.000 km2) and presents a mosaic of the phytophysiognomies, which is often reflected in its biodiversity. Despite its great distribution, the biological diversity of the biome still much unknown. Herein, we present a revision about the herpetofauna of this threatened biome. It is possible that the majority of the living families of amphibians and reptiles UNESCOof the savanna ecoregion originated – inEOLSS Gondwana, and had already diverged at the end of Mesozoic Era, with the Tertiary Period being responsible for the great diversification. Nowadays, the Cerrado harbors 152 amphibian species (44 endemic) and is only behind Atlantic Forest, which has 335 species and Amazon, with 232 species. Other SouthSAMPLE American open biomes , CHAPTERSlike Pantanal and Caatinga, have around 49 and 51 species, respectively. Among the 36 species distributed among eight families in Brazil, 10 species (4 families) are found in the Cerrado. Regarding the crocodilians, the six species found in Brazil belongs to Alligatoridae family, and also can be found in the Cerrado. -

This kind of vocalization is important for specific recognition, thus studies describing these calls are needed. Herein we describe the advertisement calls of three anuran species from the Cerrado Biome: (a) Allobates goianus (Aromobatidae); (b) Odontophrynus salvatori (Cycloramphidae); (c) Lysapsus caraya (Hylidae). From October to December/2001 and March/2009, the vocalizations of individuals of these species were recorded in three municipalities in Goiás state: Alto Paraíso, Araguapaz and Silvânia. The advertisement calls emitted by A. goianus presented modulation of frequency and those vocalizations emitted by O. salvatori and L. caraya showed pulsioned structure. In general, these species presented advertisement calls different from those emitted by other species in the same genus. This difference reinforces the importance of the advertisement calls for specific recognition and also the validity of these species. -

We report a new distributional record of Allobates goianus in Niquelândia (Goiás State, Central Brazil), and its rediscovery in Minaçu since the creation of the Serra da Mesa dam lake in 1997. Moreover, we describe the species advertisement call from Niquelândia, reporting on a new calling emission pattern for the species, plus we provide the first comprehensive definition, diagnosis, and interspecific comparisons of A. goianus based on our two newly col- lected additional specimens since its original description in the mid-1970s. Allobates goianus is compared with the 22 Allobates species known to occur in Brazil due to geographic proximity. Morphological, color, and acoustic traits diagnose A. goianus from all analyzed congeners, except A. brunneus and A. olfersioides.
