Introduction Well, what a year it has been!

Going back 12 months, our 1st XV had survived relegation on the last day of the season, and we had received notification that we had been awarded a franchise. We anticipated transition in the senior squad as we built towards SUPER 6, and we had a new coaching team in place across the senior squads. The structure to our Youth Academy was bedding in. We were excited for the season ahead and knew there was plenty of work to do.

Well, we weren’t wrong….

On the field, our senior squads performed creditably, and it was a welcome change for the 1st XV not to be involved in a relegation fight. Whilst we stood toe-toe with the top 4, we couldn’t eek out the results we were looking for, and despite some excellent performances, we settled in mid table. We did have the honour of the league’s top try scorer in Johnny Matthews with 19 tries, and Jordan Edmunds not far behind.

Our 2nd and 3rd XVs also battled for consistency, albeit with a peppering of excellent results. It is worth reminding everyone that we are the only club in Scotland to field three senior teams in national competitions which is a credit to everyone involved.

Off the field, rugby politics has been dominated by SUPER 6, SRU AGM motions, consultations, more motions, and amendments. It is clear that many see SUPER6 as a threat, and it will take some time for club rugby to re-equilibrate. In January, we appointed Graham Shiel as Head Coach, and he is building strong support and playing squads for the season ahead. There is a lot still to do before SUPER6 kicks off in November, and we’ll be updating more in due course.

Our Youth Academy has really bedded in this year, with our structures and plans well under way, We still have plenty to do, but the work undertaken cannot be underestimated, and our Academy is rapidly becoming the envy of clubs across the country. We are looking to balance inclusivity with developing talent, and we feel very positive about the future. Of course, on-field success helps – our U13 to U18 won the National Shogun Conference, and our U18s won the Scottish Cup in dramatic fashion against with a last second penalty.

We had our third Italian Job event in February, and what a success it was! In conjunction with the Bill McLaren Foundation, we hosted a long lunch at Murrayfield for 500 guests, and together we raised £50,000. Special thanks to the organising group led by Derek Binnie, who more than ever, ensured the event was the success it was.

We’ve started planning for our centenary season from last summer, though it is fair to say that pace has really picked up over the past few months. Thanks to Charlie Martin and a squad of volunteers who are working on a fantastic programme for the year ahead. Expect plenty of opportunity to get involved as we look back over the last 100 years, and look forward to the next 100.

Finally, I’d like to thank all Board members, volunteers, supporters, parents, coaches and players for helping to keep the Boroughmuir family what it is, and I look forward to our centenary season ahead.

Team Performances

We are proud to say that Boroughmuir continue to be the only club in Scotland to have three senior teams playing at National level. These teams are drawn from our 122 registered senior players, but we continue to be on the lookout for more.

Our 1st XV finished 7th in the Tennent’s Premiership with 44 points and 8 wins. 18/19 was an improved season that included fantastic wins against Currie and Melrose and showed great potential, however our Heriots capitulation at home was a low point. Injuries in key positions and issues around availability of our attack coach for the season (Graham Shiel) impacted our performance.

1st XV Player of the Year: Johnny Matthews

Our 2nd XV consolidated their position in the National Reserve League 1, finishing 7th in the National Reserve League 1 with 50 points and 7 wins

2nd XV Player of the Year: Callum McDevitt

Our Third XV finished 6th in the National reserve league 2 with 49 points and 8 wins. They remain the highest ranked 3rd XV in the country, playing in National Reserve League 2 and finishing 6th. That makes them the 16th best 2nd XV in the country.

3rd XV Player of the Year: Roman Goulard.

Players Player of the year: Johnny Matthews Young Player of the year: Will Inglis Try of the Season: Kerr Gossman against Heriot's Supporters Player of the Year: Malcom Jack

Notable player stats

The First XV played 41 different players throughout the season, with Johnny Matthews ending as the top points scorer for the club with 95 points and Gavin Parker second place on 88 points.

Furthermore, Johnny Matthews ended the season as the top try scorer in the league with 19 tries, equalling the club record held by Calvin Howarth (but Johnny points out that he scored his tries in one less game than Calvin, and did it in the league above!). Also, a special mention to Craig Gossman who made the Scotland club international team.

Top 3 career appearances for the 1st XV this season: 1. Jordan Edmunds - 115 appearances in total - 19 this season 2. Mark Hare - 101 appearances in total - 3 this season 3. Craig Keddie - 89 appearances in total - 16 this season

We had a fabulous sevens season winning Hawick, Selkirk, Haddington, Edinburgh Northern and Leith; winning 36 ties and only losing 7 (as at 11th May). This resulted in a second place finish in the King of the 7s tournament.

A positive impact to Sevens was made by our U18 players. Not being threatened by relegation at the end of our XV-a-side season gave us time to prepare. Hopefully this will prove to be a good springboard for Super 6.

Peter Wright

Peter has been Head Coach at Muir for 3 seasons, bringing with him undoubted passion and a tremendous, knowledge of the game. In that period, Muir has been recognised as one of the most attractive teams to watch in club rugby, and an unrivalled team spirit has evolved as we prepare for SUPER6. We thank Peter sincerely for his contribution to the club. Peter will always be a well loved face at Meggetland, and we look forward to hearing stories of his GHK adventures. Of his departure Peter said ‘being part of the Muir family and it’s journey to the club it is today has been fantastic. I certainly won’t be a stranger to the club and wish it all the best for the SUPER 6 and the exciting times ahead’. Everyone at Boroughmuir would like to wish Peter well in the next stage of his coaching career as Head Coach at GHK.

Youth Academy

On field and in competition we have had our most successful season in recent memory. We were overall winners of the Mitsubishi Shogun Conference League and our U18 team were winners of the National Youth League Cup.

Mitsubishi Shogun Conference

The U13 to U18 teams play in the Shogun Conference, the top Club Midi Rugby Competition run by Scottish Rugby. Seven teams took part in the Conference in 2018/19 (Ayr, Biggar, Boroughmuir, Highland, Hamilton, Stirling County, and West of Scotland). Games are played home and away.

Of the 60 Shogun Conference games, the Academy results were:

50 wins; 0 draws; 10 losses; 83% success rate for matches played; U15 squad went unbeaten; U14s and U18s were unbeaten at home.

It is important to recognise just how high we set the bar for youth rugby this season, winning the conference by a 20 point margin is unprecedented and is something to be celebrated.

Academy growth

Putting results to one side, our main objective is to have as many young people as possible playing rugby every week, and we are pleased to say that the number of young people playing rugby in the Academy continues to grow, with the following numbers in each age group:

Age group Players P1/2 41 P3 19 P4 31 P5 27 P6 29 P7 19 U13 29 U14 41 U15 31 U16 28 U18 36 Total 331

Notable player stats

We have had a few players playing regional rugby this season:

Edinburgh U20 Gavin Inkster Edinburgh U18 Grant Stevenson, Ethan McVicker Edinburgh U17 Callum MacGregor, Jeke Canakaivata Edinburgh U16 Reuben Maloney U17 Charlie Farmer, Matt Crawford East Lothian U15 Ramsay Allan

We also had 7 players in a Club Select XV playing against Scotland U18’s - Calum Anderson, Paul Bogie, Finlay Devine, Derry McConnell, Ben MacKintosh, Ethan McVicker, and Grant Stevenson.

Coaches comments

“It has been a really good year for the P3 team at Boroughmuir. We have always had a great number of players and coaches. The children have had a lot of games and really showed that they are starting to understand the full concept of the game at their level. In our last game they managed to score a few tries after passing the ball all the way down the line quickly. They were very proud of themselves, so were we as parents and coaches. We are looking forward to the start of the new season.” Gaetan Richard. P3 Head Coach

“P4 group has grown to 30 registered kids with at least 20 in attendance every week. We have also grown the coaching team to 6 with 1 UKCC2 & 2 UKCC1 trained coaches. More kids and coaches are always welcome! The kids have made great progress over the season learning the new age grade laws for P4 and are showing great handling, attacking, tackling as well as building their teamwork skills. The coaching team looks forward to seeing them all back next season.” Bruce Armstrong, P4 Head coach

“P6s had a positive season with steady numbers throughout and boys enjoying their rugby. Individually many increased in confidence which was great to see and as a squad they have developed a good style of attacking rugby with lots of offloading and keeping the ball alive. One of the highlights of the season was getting selected to send a squad to Oriam to take part in an SRU festival with teams from across Scotland. Some new laws were trialed and the games filmed - the boys enjoyed the experience of using the brilliant facilities and competed well on the day.” Roy Hasson, P6 Head Coach

“P7s really have gone from strength to strength this year. Every team member has progressed to some degree. The biggest team improvement has been a collective ability to focus at training and this has undoubtedly reaped rewards for the group. Communication has been a great area of improvement. When these boys get it right they can play some amazing rugby.” Calum Thomson, P7 Coach

“This season has all been about adapting to the step up from mini to midi rugby for the U13s. Not having the biggest of teams, the 28 players have had to work hard to hold their own and outplay their bigger opposition. This, together with the focus on giving players equal playtime and opportunities in different positions while maintaining a framework in which to learn, has meant slow, steady but strong foundation level progress has been made by all. The contrast between the first and last game of the season is an amazing transformation and achievement by all the players and bodes well for next season. Close links with the Boroughmuir Schools’ Cluster has helped support the development of those players involved and the successful trialling of a pilot with the U14s where 4 of the younger, newer U14 players with development needs joined the squad for a 6 week block greatly assisted with development of the U13s and those U14s involved.” Rob Hoole, U13 Head Coach

“U14 has seen a steady growth in squad numbers, ending the season on 41. Throughout the year, we have worked hard to maximise everyone’s development opportunities and game time which has resulted in clear improvements in all players. The teams results have been very good and the boys have won many tournaments including winning the Currie Tournament on the final weekend of the season. The coaching team are proud of the progress being made by the boys and how well they have bonded into a strong supportive squad.” Bruce Gemmell, U14 Head Coach

“U15s have continued to consolidate their strength as a squad and as individuals. Having gone unbeaten in the Shogun conference, they have performed well both abroad and at home. A successful tour to Bordeaux consolidated the squad ethos of this group of players. They finished second in the U15s 10's tournament but were return winners of the Stirling 7'shaving won it at U14s last year. Recent pathways matches have seen a number of the boys progress to the summer Edinburgh programme, and we wish them the very best with this. All in all, another positive year of development, with more to follow in 2019/2020.” Ritchie Somerville, U15 Head Coach

“The U16s have had another season of progression and improvement. The boys met their pre-season target of at least 8 wins including notable wins over league rivals Ayr and Biggar. This allowed us to qualify for the National Cup and a run to the semi final where we gave a great account of ourselves in a narrow defeat to Stirling. Throughout the season the boys have improved both individually and a team. The coaches have worked hard to ensure that all squad members have been able to feature in games with 32 players featuring throughout the season. 6 players will remain at U16 level next year with the rest stepping up to Colts rugby.” Paul Bierman, U16 Head Coach

“Our U18 XV finished Top in the U18 Shogun Conference with 34 points (2 ahead of Stirling County) and only lost 1 game out of 12 away to Ayr/Wellington. Highlight of the season though was the National League Cup Final win at BT Murrayfield against Ayr/Wellington. With Ayr having scored a try 3 minutes to go to lead 14-12, a determined last 3 minutes from the U18’s brought a penalty with the time-up on 70 mins. Calum Anderson (Stand-Off) calmly slotted the kick between the posts to take the trophy back to Meggetland for the 1st time. A fabulous end to a very successful season on the pitch for the U18’s 15 aside games. Further wins in the two 10’s Tournaments entered this season followed, at North Berwick, where they successfully defended last year’s title, and at the Dalziel 10’s.” Scott Anderson, U18 Head Coach

Preparing for SUPER 6

At last year’s AGM, we agreed that our new SUPER 6 club should be called Boroughmuir Bears. Work has been underway to develop a brand and identity that we can all get behind and be proud of.

In December we signed the franchise deal guaranteeing us SUPER 6 and Cross border rugby for five years.

On 14th December and after a rigorous process interviewing multiple candidates, we were delighted to announce Graham Shiel as Head Coach to lead the Boroughmuir Bears SUPER 6 team on an initial 30-month contract. Graham joined us from . He has a tremendous breadth and depth of experience and is a superb fit for our strategy of developing our own talent. Graham has been working on recruiting the Bears coaching team and a squad of players.

In January, we created a new company called Boroughmuir Bears Ltd to manage the affairs of our new SUPER 6 team. The Directors are Ally Hay, Steve Langmead and Stevie Douglas. This is how it aligns with other club entities.

We have had 8 SUPER 6 Meetings with the SRU and other successful franchises focusing on commercials and playing. These are positive and supportive meetings allowing us to influence how SUPER 6 will operate.

We have had four business Advisory Panel Meetings – the focus has been on branding, sponsorship, transition planning, match attendance and facilities. The aim of the Panel is to bring business leaders and specialists together to support our club in delivering the best outcome for all of our stakeholders.

We have had open dialogue with other non SUPER 6 Edinburgh Clubs promoting club rugby and how Super 6 can work for all rugby clubs in Scotland.

We were involved with SRU club survey on Scottish Rugby Competition structure and that has resulted in our Club first XV being placed in National 1 league for next season.

The Board is tremendously excited by the opportunities that SUPER6 will bring for Boroughmuir. The cross border competition with Welsh clubs has just been announced, and this will add an exciting extra dimension to our season.

At the heart of our approach is ensuring our sustainability, and taking the long term view. We still intend to run three senior “Club” XVs, so there will be plenty of opportunity to watch rugby at Meggetland next season,

Launch of the Bill Watson Youth Rugby Bursary Programme We successfully launched the Bill Watson Youth Rugby Bursary Programme sponsored by Microtech Group. This programme aims to make rugby accessible to all and therefore can fully fund players gum shields, training kit and boots, membership and can even cover the cost of going on team tours. In the first year 6 players were included in the programme but we hope to see this expand next season.

The Community Boroughmuir Rugby and Sports Community Club continues to be at the heart of the community, with Meggetland being the home for so many teams. We are continuing to work closely with Boroughmuir Hockey, Boroughmuir Cricket, Boroughmuir Thistle and this season has seen us welcome Tynecastle FC to the facility. Tynecastle now see this as their home, and joined as associate members of Boroughmuir, which is a great addition to the club. It is not only other clubs that see our clubhouse as their home, as many community, childrens and fitness groups also use the club regularly, with weekdays at Canalside being a hub of parents and toddler groups, weekly meetings and yoga.

There have been many charity events this year, raising over £30,000 for good causes. The two that stand out were the Italian Job, which raised money for the Bill McLaren foundation, and the Hugh McMaster day, raising money for Marie Curie on the day the First XV hosted Hawick at Meggetland.

With your ongoing support we want to ensure that our club continues to positive impact on the surrounding area and Meggetland community.

Bill secured grant funding from Social Investment Scotland and the Robertson Trust, enabling us to refurbish the clubhouse, and create Canalside café, as well as hire our first Community Development Manager.

Many will remember Bill’s previous roles at the club, including, player and coach, and winning 10 caps for Scotland. Bill is a Boroughmuir man through and through and in 2018, the club awarded him the position of Honorary Member for his services to the club.

Preparing for our centenary year We are all looking forward to our Centenarycommittee has been working to create a Season. Over the last few months a small programme of events that help celebrate our achievements and give lapsed and existing members an opportunity to re-connect with old friends. Next season is already busy with 2019 Rugby World Cup and Super 6 fixtures to cram in, so the team have done a sterling job creating something that works.

We’ll kick off late August, just before the league season starts, with an invitational game. Then throughout the season there will be various other events: an over 60s re-union dinner, a book launch, a Celebration Ball (in conjunction with Save the Children charity), an exhibition of memorabilia, regular match day lunches that bring people together to celebrate events that are part of our history and there maybe even be a mural unveiling.

The centre piece of our Centenary Season will be our Centenary Big Weekend involving every area of the club; from our Youth Academy to Super 6. We’ll close our celebrations with an end of season awards dinner at beginning of June. Throughout the year we will also be selling commemorative centenary leisure wear, which would make brilliant Christmas presents. The Board’s thanks go to the Centenary Committee driving this Centenary programme: Charlie Martin, Alan Irvine, George Clark, Peter Carruthers, Bill Noble, Johnny Matthews, Catherine Stevens, Vicki Scott, Mike Stevens, Mike Fraser and Derek Binnie.
