The starting point of J. Ratzinger/Benedict XVI’s thought and teaching is clear distinc- tion between seeking unity through human strategy and the way to unity ultimately accepted as the gift of God Himself. Consequently, it paves the way for thinking about Christian schism in the context of “Divine retribution,” that is, the situation where God still acts and attracts to Himself. Such a perspective protects against vanity and ambition to organise the world as if according to “God’s way,” but — in practice — without God. Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI copes with ecumenically tempting notions-proposals (e.g., pluralism) that lead to an apprehensive forgetting of one’s own identity. His lode- stars are: Christ — the Truth — longing — patience — suffering — good — conversion. Keywords: ecumenism, unity, communio, dialogue, Christocentrism, truth, logoi sperma- tikoi, praeparatio evangelica, modernity “At the beginning of his ministry in the Church of Rome which Peter bathed in his blood, Peter’s current Successor takes on as his primary task the duty to work tirelessly to rebuild the full and visible unity of all Christ’s followers” — we read already in the “First Message” from 20 April 2005 delivered to the college of cardinals in the Sistine Chapel addressed not only to “venerable brother cardinals,” but also to “dear brothers and sisters in Christ” and “all men and women of good will.”1 1 P. Kraków 2008 [hereafter: SBPTU], p. 13. 10 Jerzy Szymik Ecumenism is a dimension of Christian and ecclesiastic communio which Peter is obliged to serve, so to speak, ex definitione, ex officio and at any price: offering his own blood and any possible effort. The service to the unity is understood by Benedict XVI broadly, which has been proven by his practical moves during his almost eight years of pontificate. Not only does it encompass “rebuilding […] the unity of all Christ’s followers” (which is ecumenism in the strict sense, inter-Christian ecumenism; it is this ecumenism which, in the strict sense, is “the primary task” of the Holy Father),2 but it does it in a broader sense — inter-religious dialogue, and in the broadest sense — an attitude that unites everybody and every- thing, the entire reality around the Truth, in line with the conciliar under- standing of sacramentality of the Church, the irreducible component of which is, according to Lumen gentium, being “the sign and the tool of the entire mankind.”3 Ecumenism is for J. Ratzinger/Benedict XVI both an important and fascinating issue. I firmly believe that this is the key issue for understand- ing the essence of what is really new, fresh and creative in his message with respect to modern and post-modern thought (in the classical sense of the term). Creative novelty of theological works of J. Ratzinger/Bene- dict XVI is outstanding, when juxtaposed with what in “modern” and “post-modern” theories (the notions no longer correspond directly to the already obsolete content) is passé in the face of the dynamically changing spiritual position of our world and time... Nothing ages quicker than com- pulsive and egotistical attempts to find novelty that enslaves everything, including the truth (which can be clearly seen in post-modern attempts to preserve the youth — it makes one laugh, embarrassed, sad...). The ecu- menical dimension of Logos-oriented, sense-giving Christology and com- munal ecclesiology of J. Ratzinger/Benedict XVI shows clearly freshness and originality of this thought. Partly because his movements in the area of ecumenical dialogue have been perceived for many years by some commentators as controversial to say the least major documents of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith signed by the Prefect, such as Letter to the bishops of the Catholic Church on some aspects of the Church understood as communio “Commun- ionis notio” from 28 may 1992 and Declaration “Dominus Iesus” on the unity and salvific universality of Jesus Christ and the Church from 6 August 2000 were seen by many, as Ratzinger himself admits, as “ecumenical train derailment.”4 Such opinions (most of them concerned his position 2 SBPTU, p. 13. 3 Sobór Watykański II: Konstytucja dogmatyczna o Kościele ‘Lumen gentium’, No. 1. 4 T. In a harsh and pedantic review of What Happened at Vatican II the late Richard John Neuhaus, on one hand gives O’Malley back-handed compliments for his balanced analysis, and in the next sentence rushes in to castigate him with misleading accusations of presenting the ‘discontinuity’ perspective of the council. Neuhaus writes dismissively: “What Happened at Vatican II is a 372-page brief for the party of novelty and discontinuity. Its author comes very close to saying explicitly what is frequently implied: that the innovationists practiced subterfuge, and they got away with it” [10]. I would have to credit Neuhaus with providing a reminder here of how appropriate the ‘moonbat’ and ‘wingnut’ designations are when it comes to critiques of Vatican II and the liturgy. A Brief History of Coptic Personal Status Law Ryan Rowberry John Khalil* INTRODUCTION With the U.S.-led "War on Terror" and the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan, American legal scholars have understandably focused increased attention on the various schools and applications of Islamic law in Middle Eastern countries. 1 This focus on Shari'a law, however, has tended to elide the complexity of traditional legal pluralism in many Islamic nations. Numerous Christian communities across the Middle East (e.g., Syrian, Armenian, Coptic, Nestorian, Maronite), for example, adhere to personal status laws that are not based on Islamic legal principles.     Vatican II: The Radical Shift to Ecumenism Branson Shaffer History Faculty advisor: Kimberly Little The Catholic Church is the world’s oldest, most continuous organization in the world. But it has not lasted so long without changing and adapting to the times. One of the greatest examples of the Catholic Church’s adaptation to the modernization of society is through the Second Vatican Council, held from 11 October 1962 to 8 December 1965. In this gathering of church leaders, the Catholic Church attempted to shift into a new paradigm while still remaining orthodox in faith. It sought to bring the Church, along with the faithful, fully into the twentieth century while looking forward into the twenty-first. Out of the two billion Christians in the world, nearly half of those are Catholic.1 But, Vatican II affected not only the Catholic Church, but Christianity as a whole through the principles of ecumenism and unity. There are many reasons the council was called, both in terms of internal, Catholic needs and also in aiming to promote ecumenism among non-Catholics. There was also an unprecedented event that occurred in the vein of ecumenical beginnings: the invitation of preeminent non-Catholic theologians and leaders to observe the council proceedings.     A Look Inside Lumen Fidei – Year of Faith Talk I. Introduction I’ve decided to speak this evening for a time on Pope Francis’ new encyclical on faith called, “Lumen Fidei”, “The Light of Faith.” As you may know, it was largely completed by Pope Benedict XVI. Pope Francis, without hesitation, made it his own and issued it under his own name. In a sense, we can hear the voices of two pontiffs in one encyclical! II. The Light of Faith is not Illusory Let’s begin here. The encyclical, as we shall see in more detail, begins with the question of whether the light of faith is real – or whether it is an illusion, as much of the world thinks. In our times, the faith is not thought of so much as light but rather as darkness. In fact, many feel that faith is an actual hindrance in the quest for knowledge. Faith may soothe and console those who seek that sort of thing but it is not part of the search for knowledge. It is an illusory light which hinders a humanity that seeks to be liberated from the constraints of ignorance, myth, superstition, and irrational moral constraint. In this mode of thinking, the relationship between faith and reason is all but lost. Faith is thought of not as a friend and companion to reason but rather as unreasonable, as anti-rational. Thus, in the not-too-distant-past, modernity put its trust in reason ‘liberated’ from faith. This was the thrust of the “Enlightenment” and its aftermath.

These affect a series of areas that can be analyzed from two interpreta- tive viewpoints: one could be defined as system-related, the other content-related. These two terms are intended to define the impact that VG will have on the whole of the Holy See’s Higher Education System on the one hand, and, on the other hand, effectively “what” will be changed.
