WELCOME TO OUDENAARDE Oudenaarde combines the best of two worlds: the charm of a relatively small but cosy historical town on the banks of the river Scheldt but yet providing all the facilities you encounter in a much bigger town. The town is easy to get to by car, bike or public transport (frequent and direct connection to Brussels, Ghent and Bruges). This way Oudenaarde is a perfect starting point to visit these larger cities. Situated in the valley of the Scheldt the town is surrounded by the hills and hillocks which constitute The Flemish Ardennes. The combination of the green district – ‘Flanders’ Most Beautiful Landscape’– with its rich art-historical past and patrimony, with its authentic area and buildings transforms Oudenaarde into a magnet for tourists and sightseers. All sights are within walking distance (2,2 km) from the centre. Recently, new projects to renew the town scape have been laid out, such as the reconstruction of the quays and banks along the Scheldt, the new Scheldekop, a peninsular in the Scheldt, the new layout of the town park and the market place. This market, of old the beating heart of the town, is now the place to be for a chat, over a glass of beer or with a good meal. Traffic has been drastically reduced and with the new plantation the function of the square is now revalued. With its famous cobbled green hills and hillocks Oudenaarde is also the background of The Tour of Flanders, especially since the finishing line of this world famous cycle race has been drawn near the town centre. Within the boundaries of the town the local authorities aim to concentrate the urban structures in order to safeguard the countryside, keeping out those new developments that might harm the natural beauty of the landscape.     Landslides in Belgium—Two Case Studies in the Flemish Ardennes and the Pays de 20 Herve Olivier Dewitte, Miet Van Den Eeckhaut, Jean Poesen and Alain Demoulin Abstract Most landslides in Belgium, and especially the largest features, do not occur in the Ardenne, where the relief energy and the climate conditions seem most favourable. They appear in regions located mainly north of them where the lithology consists primarily of unconsolidated material. They develop on slopes that are relatively smooth, and their magnitude is pretty large with regard to that context. An inventory of more than 300 pre-Holocene to recent landslides has been mapped. Twenty-seven percent of all inventoried landslides are shallow complex landslides that show signs of recent activity. The remaining landslides are deep-seated features and rotational earth slides dominate (n > 200). For such landslides, the average area is 3.9 ha, but affected areas vary from 0.2 to 40.4 ha. The exact age of the deep-seated landslides is unknown, but it is certain that during the last century no such landslides were initiated. Both climatic and seismic conditions during the Quaternary may have triggered landslides. The produced landslide inventory is a historical inventory containing landslides of different ages and triggering events. Currently, only new shallow landslides or reactivations within existing deep-seated landslides occur. The focus on the Hekkebrugstraat landslide in the Flemish Ardennes allows us to understand the recent dynamics of a large reactivated landslide. It shows the complexity of the interactions between natural and human-induced processes. The focus on the Pays the Herve allows for a deeper understanding of landslide mechanisms and the cause of their origin in natural environmental conditions.

    Best practices in rural development Flanders – Belgium Nominated and winning projects Competition Prima Plattelandsproject 2010 Preface At the beginning of April 2010, the Prima Plattelandsproject competition was launched. In the frame of this competition the Flemish Rural Network went in search of the best rural projects and activities in Flanders, subsidized under the Rural Development Programme 2007-2013 (RDP II). No fewer than 35 farmers or organisations submitted their candidacy. A total of 32 candidates were finally retained by the Flemish Rural Network. These were distributed as follows in function of the competition themes: - added value through cooperation: 15 candidates; - smart use of energy in agriculture and rural areas: 0 candidates; - care for nature and biodiversity: 8 candidates; - communication and education as an instrument: 6 candidates; - smart marketing strategies: 3 candidates. The provincial juries decided which of the submitted files could continue to the next round (up to 3 projects per theme per province). Then an international jury selected the five best candidates for each theme for the whole of Flanders. After that, everyone had the opportunity to vote for their favourite(s)on the www.ruraalnetwerk.be website. No less than 7300 valid votes were registered! We present a patient with severe nonischemic cardiomyopathy in whom the HeartLogic algorithm was activated on her Boston Scientific cardioverter defibrillator. She had an out-of-alert state for several months and had clinically “stable” heart failure with no hospitalizations in the last 6 months. A sudden and fast increase of the HeartLogic index preceded her presentation in the emergency ward by several days. The detailed readout of HeartLogic however had some atypical features for heart failure decompensation. The patient presented at the emergency department with an increased dyspnea and a dry cough. Clinical exam showed desaturation and was suggestive for an acute respiratory infection.

G DENDERMONDE, DE GE TSE CITA DEL EN DE VESTING OUDENAARDE ROBERT GILS GENT 2005 INLEIDING Wanneer Napoleon in 1815 van het toneel verdwijnt, lijkt er voor Ew·opa een nieuwe tijd aan te bi-eken. De grote mo­ gendheden nemen het besluit de beide Nederlanden te vei-­ enigen onder het Huis van Oranje. Tussen 1815 en 18l0, tijdens die kortstondige hereniging, bouwt of vernieuwt de ederla.ndse genie, op het grond­ gebied van het huidige België, 19 vestingen als grensverde­ diging tegen Frankrijk: de Wellingronbarrière. Drie van die vestingen lagen op het grondgebied van de provincie Oost­ Vlaanderen, namelijk Dendern10nde, Gent en Oudenaarde. Deze publicatie schetst de tomandkom.i.ngvan de Welling­ ton barrière en beschrijft de ,-ersterkingen van die drie Oost-Vlaamse steden, alsook de vestingbouwkundige over­ blijfselen ervan. DE WELLINGTON ' BARRIERE EEN BARRIÈ RE Grensversrerkingen behoorden tot de zogenaamde strate­ gische versterkingen. Ze moesten nier alleen een object ver­ dedigen, zoals een woning of een nederzetting, maar een hele streek of zelfs een land en maakten dus deel uit van de nationale landsverdediging. De uitbouw van dergelijke ,·er­ srerkingen was maar mogelijk wanneer her centraal bestuur sterk genoeg was om zijn wil op re leggen, zoals dar het geval was voor de Romeinen, de graven van Vlaanderen of Ka.rel V. Grensversrerkingen bestonden uit één of meerdere lij­ nen van forten of vestingen (dit zijn versterkte steden), uit verdedigingslinies of uit een combinatie van beide voor­ gaande.
